I am also a catechumen awaiting chrismation, and one of the many things I deeply enjoy about my new faith is how we give praise to the Lord using all of our senses.
Hi, I am an Orthodox Christian from Bulgaria and want to thank you for your helpful video! This Saturday we will try to burn our incense just like you! May God bless you!
Sometimes I add some of the ash on top of the lit charcoal. This provides a layer of protection for the incense, it burns more smoothly and it doesn't boil. Thanks for the video.
im going to try this. my incense has been burning (in a bad way) a lot lately. makes the room smell like charred smoke rather than the incense fragrance.
Some Orthodox add bay/laurel leaves as a gesture evoking Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Usually 4 leaves are placed in the censer, prior to the lit charcoal and incense, in cruciform with their points extending from beneath the charcoal pellet/s; one tip at each point: north, south, east, west.
You can actually burn incense without charcoal as well, in a burner that has a candle at its base and an incense holder on top. If open fire catches the incense it will ruin it, but if only the heat of a candle reaches it, the incense will begin to release its fragrance and a bit of smoke, less than with charcoal.
Thank you for your very informative video, we have tried several times to burn incense on charcoal, ending up with a room of chocking smoke, so your video has highlighted our errors.. Thank you again and may you live in peace
Have you tried using an electric resin incense burner? They produce much less smoke than charcoal because they have a variable temperature control. I use one I made myself and I think they are worth the effort. If you want to check it out, there's a video of me using it on my TH-cam channel.
Thanks for sharing this info! I love your icon of Saint Paisios. I have been looking for one just like that with the gold leaf and haven't had much luck. Do you happen to recall where you purchased it from?
Hi. Do you say a prayer before or during lighting the incense? I remember my grandmother whispering something as she passed the smoke into me and I did my cross.
Hey brother in christ. My coals go cold after abt 10-15 mins max (i have a very small incense burner and the coals arent that big. About 4cm radius and abt 2 cm depth) is there a way to make them last longer? And to point out as well, the coal doesn’t become ash. Did i not make it hot enough?

Thank you for the video, Jeremiah. I have seen some people place foil in their censer to prevent damage being done to the metal. Is this needed? Does the charcoal really do that much damage?
I apologize for the late reply. Foil inside is not something that I've ever done. Unless you have something antique and valuable that you need to keep perfectly preserved, I don't see the sense in it. And if you have something like that, you should probably use a different censer anyway. Censers get sticky resin and other blemishes after a lot of use. To me, it's just part of using one. Like a car, it's going to get dirty. But they can be cleaned periodically.
I just tried without watching but gave off too much smoke and fire alarm sensor went off … I’m worried now I need to try another way to offer up to the Lord what should I do? Should I try this one more time or send back
I bought a Suprus arc lighter, that's flameless for lighting the charcoal. My icon corner is small and in my bedroom, have you ever used a flameless lighter on charcoal before? I'll probably test it on a beeswax candle first.
Thank you for your tips even if I’m a Bible believing Christian today and not Greek Orthodox anymore I still love the smell of incense God bless you and your family ❤️
Once everything cools down completely, I dump the ash into a small container. Once that fills up, I bury it outside. Same goes with anything else that is use in the prayer corner: burn and bury.
@@OrthodoxRoad Thank you for the answer. My incense burner over time accomulates hard sediment which influances the incense smell. I'm not sure if I should use a chemical to clean the hardened sediment or try to pry it out somehow.
@@LazarIvanda That hard substance is likely resin build up. Some people are able to get it cleaned off by soaking the censer in warm, soapy water for several hours. Other times it takes rubbing alcohol or acetone to clean. Be careful with the latter two cleaners since they can remove the finish from your censer.
Hi Karla, ash should be disposed of in a respectful way. Most frequently, I bury it outside. The point is to put it in a place that it won't be trampled on. If your living situation doesn't allow that sort of thing (such as being in an apartment in a city), then ask your priest if you can bring it to him.
@Sephar churches use countless different types of incense. If you find out from your priest what type of incense they use and buy that, then you can probably make this smell like it does in church.
I'm Lutheran and i just order one of these 2 days ago so i can start burning resin at my home altar instead of these cheap incense sticks that kinda has a stinky smell to it.
Good question. It totally depends on how often you burn and how much you use. I have several varieties of incense and rotate through them. Doing that makes each ounce last a few years.
hey do you know maybe if there is a differnce between the incence we orthodox christians burn vs the incense budhists and other people burn that is in a form of stick
I used to burn stick incense. From what I understand, it is often bamboo wrapped with a paste that has essential oils in it. Many Orthodox use Athonite style incense, which is frankincense that is processed by hand and mixed with other resins and oils.
@@sofaz9006 No, if, for example, you have the stick incense but don't have the ability to burn regular Athonite style incense, then I don't see a problem with that. It's how I started out. But I now find the stick incense to be far inferior in aroma. I hope to release a new video in the coming months about how to burn Athonite style incense without charcoal. Hopefully that will help more people.
