    I love that you fire these old guns. As I've told you in the past, adding your experience to the linear history of firearms like yours is beyond cool to me. Someone likely used that revolver in battle 150 years ago, and now it's once again alive in yours. wow.

      Thanks!! there is something incredible about holding these old revolvers. This could have easily been the difference between life and death for some person. There could be a family lineage alive today because of this gun. All the scratches and little dents have stories to tell. I just wish I knew what they were. My favorite thing i see on guns that served in the Civil War. most have these dents right in front of the trigger guard where it looks like somebody put it up against a fence or braced it against something when they shot. I dont see this that much on civilian guns. but on military guns I do. they didn't care about scratching the gun. And I would much rather have a gun with scratches and dents then in perfect shape that lived in a box it's whole life

    Great video. For many years I've wanted to see a video of an original Griswold & Gunnison revolver being fired. And yes to my knowledge this is the first and only video of one being fired. It's difficult to even find photos of disassembly & of all the internal components.
    Is the cylinder on yours the original twisted iron one?
    I read somewhere that the area inside the frame where the trigger components & such are wasn't milled out with a traditional mill but rather done by hand with a hammer & chisel. The frames were cast though so I would think that the hollow space inside the frame was cast as part of it then just finished via hand filing probably.

      @snappers_antique_firearms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have learned why there arent many others being shot. A very large portion are worn out and shot loose. This is what i was told by the Griswold and Gunnison owners club. its because of the very poor brass and other lower quality materials. This one was worn out and shot loose. but I wanted to shoot an original so I brought it back to shootable condition. Yes it has the Twisted iron cylinder. you can see the twists in the cylinder. The internals look crudely machined. But was done well enough that colt 51 navy internals fit... Well Kind of with a little fitting.

    Glock mags in a Griswold? Great to see it shootI have been looking forward to this for a long time, but it was worth the wait! I wonder if the rifling would have something to do with how hard the gun shoots?

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to see you gunsmith4570. I did measure the rifling and I don't remember off my head its size. I need to measure the barrel again. I know that I got the cylinder Gap very small when i had to make its arbor. It also could be the iron not expanding as much when it's fired so more energy spent propelling the bullet. I am not 100% sure. I need to buy a chronograph lol. If You have any ideas love to hear.

  • @leadbullets4life

    snapper i love the old confederate brass..is your revolver a reproduction or and oldie but a goodie? looks like the springs need replacing other than that! a great outdoor shooter, when i did my video 2 weeks ago i ran the balls dry and it did the same thing ...accuracy started to suffer but continued to fire, lubrication is a necessary must if your gonna shoot multiple rounds, but most real life combat shooting there were no lubricated balls stuffed on the loaded balls the biggest reason is most outdoor conditions were hot and the lube would run out anyways and lubricated wads would also make the powder wet and mushy causing misfires, and you can get away with just firing 6 rounds at your opponent even multiple rounds dry if needed.

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a original made in late 1862 or early 1863. Yeah the accuracy was greatly reduced because of fouling. I have shot the revolver 1 other time and it did great but the video had no audio....🙄. I am in Arizona my father passed away a few days ago. When i get home i will send you out those Colt cartridge Works 36 caliber bullets .375 they actually have a lubrication ring.... When they were originally manufactured into combustible paper cartridges for the Civil War. they dipped the tip of the bullet in Lube. That was only paper cartridge and towards the end of the war. if you cast your own bullets like some units did. you had no lubrication on the bullets. I couldn't imagine that kind of fighting during the Civil War must have been unbearable. Thanks again brother.
