Hi Angela, I neither use Twitter much nor have a Facebook group where i could host this event. Since i want to build my Instagram Account and provide some really good exclusive content there it seemed best to host it there :) - plus: Instagram is a purely photo/video focused page. The others are all mixed media with tons of text post. So as a photo guy i just feel much more at home on Insta :)
Hey Olivio, I would like to thank you for this tutorial, for me, it's a real game-changer. I have done some experimentation with your technique and feel that I can add something worthwhile to the technique. Try setting - Hardness - Flow- and Opacity all to 33% - I have found that this gives me optimal control when dodging and burning. Also, It is worth experimenting with Gaussian Blur. When used subtlely added to the dodge and burn layer it has the effect of really refining the results. I hope that this is helpful guys and thanks again Olivio for sharing a major breakthrough :-)
That’s a pretty good idea. I always dodged and burned yet non destructive by two curve layers and brushing the mask to make it suite. But this saves you a whole layer. Suggestion: set flow to 1% and flip-flop black and white by “X”, this will make hassle by color slider obsolete and result in a faster workflow 😊 - Küss die Hoond 😉
Thank you for your excellent videos. I have combined this with a threshold layer above to get a better threshold from the fine adjustments it makes possible.
Couple of thoughts and tips if I may. Dodge and burn can remove the need for a lot of adjustment layers with masks . With Lr; I have always said ''make the adjustment brush your best friend" . In many ways, we could say the same about the layer based dodge and burn in Affinity Photo where more brush types are available. To adjust effects - add a mask to dodge and burn layer . Don't stop at the grey colour - you can also paint in colours using the D+B layers . Works great with sunsets, or selectively colouring a black and white photo. I will try the idea of using different tones of grey brush -- I have mostly used very soft low opacity black or white brushes to build up the effects -- hardness 0 - flow 100 -- opacity 10%; or less is a good starting point for me. Great video Olivio --- should/could save lots of edit time for many who didn't start in the darkroom.
G'day Olivio That's a brilliant trick which I will be doing in the future because of the extra control vs doge and burn. BTW. I learnt about dodge and burn some 40 years ago when I was developing my own prints in the darkroom. Time me, D&B is (or now after your trick) was a great tool. RIP D&B.
Really a great trick. I tried it with some of my photos. Cool. Much better than dodge & burn...and you can also adjust with the same brush the colour (when you move the brush a little bit to left in the color you want)

While I already knew this technique, as well as other d&b alternatives like using curves for this purpose, there is one thing you missed while reviewing the integrated dodge and burn tools. I believe this was just to showcase the difference (or you simply didn't know about that), and not demonizing them, but generally - you were using the dodge and burn tools on full opacity and flow. From both my Photoshop experience and other videos - they are never used on full force, even with graphic tablets. The most common values which I can tell true from my experience are max. 10% if you use pen pressure tablet, and 2-3% if you are using mouse. This will give you virtually the same outcome you have shown with the grays on brush tool. :) Still - keep your good work as I still sometimes get surprised and learn new things even though I have a lot of Photoshop experience, and I am using Affinity Photo almost since the day 1. This is really cool and I am thankful for the knowledge I gained from your videos!

Like you said, you need to understand and adjust the tool to use it correctly, but with this simpler trick, you can easily build on what you already know - at least for highlights and shadows :)

Okay, I don't know Skillshare. Well, that was just an idea of mine, because it's Christmas soon. Maybe I should just try it myself. I prefer to work with Adobe Photoshop, but I want to unsubscribe next time. Too expensive for me in the long run. And Affinity photo and designer is just son cheaper. So , basically, the dodge and burn tools are useless? 😂 Glad to know I am not the only one confused by those tools though, as someone who uses the dodge and burn from Snapseed app I found Affinity's method to be a bit...odd, but thank you for the advice, it helps a lot :)
Thanks for this, I was trying the old PS way (50% gray layer set to Overlay) and it was behaving really oddly with the underlying layer structure, gonna give this method a whirl.
Have spent a LOT of time on this Olivio, but the problem I have encountered is that you say "open an empty pixel layer), however when I try to do this I always end up with a black pixel layer! :-( This may be because the default has changed, though, if that is the case, I see no option to change it to empty? Have also thought it may be that my preferences say that, but am still searching for an answer. Hoping that you can help! :-)
what do you mean by "black pixel layer" is you canvas black or just the preview in the layers tab. if it's the layers tab, don't worry about it, it still should work
Thank you, Mark. I'm using the 50% grey method in my "Magical Autumn Light" Masterclass on Skillshare. But i figured if the 50% grey isn't affecting the image anyways, why not just use a empty pixel layer instead. Saves some extra clicks :)
I'm joking at the start of the video to overplay the reaction that most people have when they fist use that tool. The way i show is a lot more intuitive for beginners and even pros use it on a regular basis. You can still use them if you like them more.

But Dogdge and Burn work on Highlights, Midtones and Shadows as per how you select - works well on Structures - textured surfaces etc.
