    This is one of the few things I won’t use Affinity for. As a photographer I use Capture One and it has a dedicated luminosity mask that’s highly adjustable and easy to use. I need to find out if Affinity works the same as C1 when it comes to the flow button. Setting this to about 5 or so the effect builds gradually and let’s you have more control. Even after switching to Affinity from Adobe Photoshop the learning curve is so different and sometimes not as user friendly. I really enjoy your videos and thanks for making things easier to understand.

    I have been using curves for dodge and burn for awhile now, but never experimented with LAB. thanks for the tutorial. One thing I do add with my curves is to use blend ranges to exclude shadows or highlights a bit more and I find this gives me a smoother transition.

    I have been using LAB color gamut exclusively for years it has obvious benefits like you show. Only convert when its time to print after taking precautions for out of gamut occurrances. By the way you can use LAB with a horizontal curve and then use the picker in curves to lighten and darken selected areas with the lightness slider selected. I have a macro in the forum to that effect..

      I certainly want to do more videos about LAB. If you have more LAB tricks you want to share, write me on facebook and let's talk :)

    I really appreciate your video. Your shirt is really cool too! I am really new at using the program so I have had to watch it several time to pick up on the basic skills but I tried it out last night and did figure out how to increase or decrease the light on specific areas. I still need to figure out how to adjust my brush but you taught me a valuable skill and the more I watch your video and practice, the more I'll retain. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas .

    Wow, now this is a very powerful way to process lightness/darkness in a photo targeting specific areas. Thank you, Olivio.I think I'll have to watch this a few times to get the hang of it. :)

    I don't understand how this is better than using the D&B brushes.
    Even in that last example -- burning the hair -- it is possible to chose the Burn brush with "Tonal Range" = Shadows, and tick the box "Protect hue", which ought to be very much like using the LAB/ lightness method described here.
    PS: I'm using 1.10.5, which may have D&B features not available when you made this vid.

    Maybe combining it with blend ranges could make this even more versitale. Would be similar to the highlights, mids and shadows selection of the doge &burn tool

    This is great, Many thanks Olivio. Is it possible to combine the LAB curves with a gradient filter to give a softer transition? I must confess that gradients are one area that I seem to struggle getting me head around in Affinity Photo.
    Keep up the great work!!!

    • @OlivioSarikas
      @OlivioSarikas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Adam, you can use a soft brush and reduce the opacity or flow of that brush to create a softer border of your mask. You can also your blur filters (not live filters) on that mask or create a gradient as a shape (100% opacity to 0% opacity gradient) and use "mask to below" to use it as a mask.

    A difficult topic for most of us. I find this type of tutorial difficult to follow because I have little idea of where you are going and what you hope will be the end point. Showing us the steps is great but saying you want to whiten the white of the eyes first would be a great help. When you start painting, please help us look in the place you are going to start painting. Sometimes it takes time to find where you are working and I don’t get the whole experience. Please don’t assume we know how to use Lab rather than RGB; I don’t, but from this tutorial I am now curious. Thanks!

    Hallo Olivio, vielen Dank für deine tollen Videos. Sie haben mir schon oft weiter geholfen. Ich habe nur ein Problem, wenn ich die Anpassungsebene mit der Kurve erstelle und diese dann inventiere und mit dem Malpinsel das Bild heller oder dunkler machen möchte, passiert bei mir gar nichts. Ich habe auch zwischen Weißer und Schwarzer Farbe hin und her versucht und Deckkraft etc. Alles auf 100%. Hab auch die neueste 1.10 Version. Hast du vielleicht eine Idee woran es liegen könnte? Vielen Dank und einen schönen Abend. Lg

      Schau mal, ob oben bei den Pinseloptionen "Transparenz schützen" eingeschaltet ist. Dannn funktioniert der Pinsel nicht.

    Hi I really have a problem about saving file project of Affinity Photo. It's very Huge File 300-500mb per project.
    How can I fix this to minimal size of the project as Photoshop did. Please help >....<
    Thank you

    • @Lykanerfan
      @Lykanerfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the .afphoto file are also the source pictures included. (So this adds a lot of memory). Also note (from AP-Help): Saving your document's history with your document may significantly increase the size of your project file.

    I don't understand how you made two squares on her face or how the blue line in the middle of the screen came to be there and once I used the selection tool it vanished so I couldn't then make two oblong as you did . I've been here hours going over and over your video but getting no where. I wish you would explain all your doing and not assuming knowledge by us learners out here I feel I know your voice as well as a family member I've listened that many times but am no wiser
