Your kids need their own TH-cam series on your channel! “Real Rap with the Boys” maybe? They are so well spoken and have such good insight :)

I know this is like a 3 year old video, BUT, I love your sarcasm, Reynolds. The way you interact with kids really resonates with me. I try to do the same. It's like sometimes you just gotta let it rip! But....you never break your professionalism in these videos. Like you are clearly their mentor, not their buddy. PERFECTLY DONE, BROTHER!

I know that we need balance and change and difference in the world, but I still find myself wishing every kid could have a teacher or a dad like you, and a teacher or mom like Brittany from Five Foot One Teacher. ♡

I'm glad to hear that it's important to know students' back-stories and have an sort of emotional connection with them. I naturally have a sort of bleeding heart for young people that are facing troubles, but I've always been worried that it's unprofessional to get too personal with students. Obviously there's still a limit, but I'm glad to see it's not as cold/harsh/Strict as I thought it would be.
Also those are some really interesting looking books you've got behind you Mr. Reynolds, if I was there I'd immediately grab the Sherlock Holmes one. I'm using a character that's a detective in a roleplay I'm running with my friends and I bet reading up on Holmes would be good research towards how to develop my character's personality and skills.

In Texas we have to set 2-3 very specific goals each school year and part of our evaluation for the year is how well we met those goals. After watching a ton of your videos in the late summer & beginning of the school year, one of the goals I set was to move toward building meaningful relationships with some of my students. That's super hard for me because I'm not good at meaningful relationships with ANYONE, really -- I even feel shy with family members sometimes -- but I understand the importance of it and I want very much to have some small positive influence on my students beyond just teaching them math and science, so I took a deep breath and committed to it.
The other side of the story is that I've had a really tough, discouraging year for lots of reasons and it's been even harder than I expected, but I do feel like I've made tiny bits of progress with a few students. It's so tiny that probably no one but me would even notice, but I'm trying, and videos like this are the number one thing that keeps me motivated. (And your videos & livestreams in general also keep me moving when everything is going wrong and bad and I feel like I never want to go back to work again, which happens a lot more than I'd like to admit.) So I said all of that to say thank you for saying these things over and over. I don't know if it makes a difference for anyone else, but it does for me. I need to hear it every single time you say it. Thank you so much for all that you do. You're the coolest. :-)

I find the seeing students out of school question really interesting because here in the UK, if we arranged to meet a student out of school that would be a heavy disciplinary issue.
Edit: there is absolutely no way we would be allowed to have a student in our house. We'd probably have our employment terminated for that. It's a really hard line to follow sometimes when you have kids who you know don't get birthdays or presents and there's little you can do about it because of the really strict guidelines around what is considered appropriate.

That's really sad but I also understand why those laws exist, to protect kids from the few teachers out there who don't have the best intentions.

I thought that was interesting too. In Toronto where I live, having a student over would be questionable and not advised. Reynolds did it the "smart way" though in that he included his family and this student brought a friend. As teachers we are told not to do certain things but sometimes those things we are told not to do is what a student needs. We are told not to do certain things to protect US as teachers. We don't want anyone to "raise an eyebrow" at a relationship we have with a student, even though it is platonic. It's the world we live in. 😒

It's actually a huge legal problem in U.S. public schools, at least, for teachers and other adults to give students car rides...not sure if having students over at your house is also as hugely problematic.

I work in the uk and my daughter was a pupil at the same school that I worked in. She would have friends staying over at our home or going out with us and it was fine with my employer as long as I declared it to them. Some of my colleagues would tutor students after school hours and this was fine as long as it was declared.
I know the laws exist for child protection but obviously there are situations when they are exempt.

I’m in Australia and that’d definitely be a big no no here. You could throw a class party or give a birthday cake at school or something, but you’d never ever invite a student over. I think you’re supposed to wait at least two years after they’ve graduated typically before you can even add them on Facebook or something.

Fortnite is huge! Lol! It was nice seeing your students and colleagues in this video. They gave some thoughtful and insightful answers. "We're like twins if twins were completely opposite". 😂 It was interesting to hear you say you do not contact parents often but focus on the relationship between the student and in some cases, parent contact doesn't help the situation. This has been so interesting! It's nice hearing the different perspectives in this Teachers Connect collaboration and it was nice doing this with you. 😀👍🏾

    Hi R.
I'm a new Literature teacher from Tel Aviv, Israel. I want to translate this video and share it with my group of Jewish and Arab Literature teachers.
I would appreciate it if you could open the video for community contribution. It would benefit many educators worldwide if we can translate your video.
    Cheers!

I just started. Would it be strange to keep a notebook and write down abbreviations of things they've told me (in case the notebook gets lost, but enough for me to remember)? There's so many and I forgot some info they've told me by the time I get pencil and paper in the classroom.

You had Romina come over to your own house? How did she even get there? How did you get approval from the principal, Romina's parents? Weren't you afraid of being falsely accused of some kind of predatory behavior? None of this makes sense to me, and I don't see how I could accomplish this from where I live.

    • @CJReynolds
      @CJReynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are really great questions.
      1. Romina came to our house with friends. It was a surprise party.
      2. The principal did not know. I got approval from her parents. They knew exactly who was going to be there and chose not to be apart of it.
      3. I was not scared. Romina has always had a great relationship with my wife and kids. There are tons of kids this idea would not have been as workable with. I take as little risk as possible when doing things like this. If it wasn’t my house we could just as easily met at a public park or restaurant.
I get that this is not for everyone. What’s more important is the spirit of what was done. Have a party in your classroom, the lunchroom, or surprise them at their locker with a cupcake. It’s the expression of care that matters most.
