MXR® Dookie Drive™ Pedal (Pt. 2)

- Billie Joe Armstrong’s guitar tone on Green Day’s groundbreaking album Dookie sounded dirty and punchy with the perfect amount of articulation to express the musicality of his fast, melodic riffs. He got that sound by running his signal through two heavily modified amplifiers-one scooped with a ton of gain and the other with a well-defined midrange. When it came time to mix the record, the band blended the two signals together in different ratios to match the vibe of each track.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Dookie, we’re releasing the MXR Dookie Drive. It captures the sound of both of Billie Joe’s amps in a single pedal so that you can dial in your own variations of that famous Dookie sound. We borrowed the amps themselves so that the MXR team could carefully analyze all the sonic qualities that make them sound so darn good. After much analysis and A/B testing, our engineers rebuilt the amps from scratch in pedal circuit form and fit them into a single housing. The High Gain and Clean Gain sections each have their own controls, while the Blend control allows you to mix them together just like Green Day did in the studio. If you want some extra scoop in the midrange of the overall output signal, just hit the Scoop switch.
The Dookie Drive isn’t just for Green Day fans-this totally unique pedal provides a full harmonic range of overdriven tones for a playing experience that is full of depth and dimension.

Ahh, I remember trying to fit some crappy headphones into my helmet to ride my dirt bike while listening to the dookie album on cassette!
So apparently by the time I was ready to buy this was already discontinued. Well I called around to different stores and found one that had one hidden in the back! Talk about lucky and I can’t wait to try this out!

The thing you have to remember with Billie is that he rarely plays through different amps, the only change is from Blue (humbucker sound) to Les Pauls and Les Paul Juniors (P90 sound). The only time he's ever used different amps is on the Trilogy, where he used vintage amps from the 60's called Silvertones, which is why those albums sound cleaner and more rock n roll. Other than that, it's always the Dookie modded Marshall SL amps.
I know in the minority, but I love the tone from the Trilogy, for me, it's better than Kerplunk sound... I always thought and heard that he used cranked up Vox's and Fenders and that he also used an Orange.. I'm going to check the Silvertones out. Thanks for mentioning that
@@nicco6951 I think it was a mix of Vox, Marshall and Silvertone amps used on the trilogy. Absolutely love that tone too!

I was upset after buying this pedal for my neighbors son who is 13. He loves the dookie album and his pedal didn’t say dookie on it or have the dookie artwork. Bummer but we both love Green Day so cheers mate!
Dookie artwork pedal was limited edition but both versions have the same features as to sounding the same.
"Insomniac" and "Pinkerton" are probably the most criminally underrated "mainstream" albums from the 90s. Insomniac is definitely better than Dookie IMO, but Pinkerton and the Blue Album are both perfect in their own ways

I remember when the Smells Like Teen Spirit video first came out, that album was massive. a defining 90s record for sure, rated and rated and rated and rated, ad nauseum. Pinkerton? basically the exact opposite reaction. Insomniac got a bit of attention, but nothing like it's predecessor or follow-up, and I believe this was due to it's darker, heavier mood and more raw songwriting and production.

Have the pedal and it’s killer. It really does sound like the Dookie tone. One of the best Marshall Plexi style pedals I’ve heard.
What are you playing it through? I have mine w a Marshall DSL40C and it just filters too much low end out and that amp’s highs are brutal even w a good EQ pedal.

i dunno, maybe its just the way it was recorded here or something, but i dont think it sounds much like billies tone on the albums or live. its too fuzzy and shrill.
Pints of Guinness Throw some drums and bass and another guitar (and a vocal) on top of it, and you might be surprised. Sometimes a certain tone only sounds a certain way in the mix.
Try the Tech 21 Hot Rod Plexi, best Superlead in a box, this is just a fuzz or a SD1 with a good art on it...

Carmine Martino looks like the pickup he had in her when they were on the 99Revoultions tour
He sweats through the pickups a couple times a year, it’s always a jb but its does get changed out.
On the records smooth/slappy hours and kerplunk it was a Bill Lawrens humbucker but in 94 it was destroyed by mudd throwing peoples at woodstock. It was preplaced by a white Duncan JB and the zebra(still a jb), and now it is a all black JB i think. I do think it looks better with the white one :) matches the other unhooked/unused pickups, and also the painting.

@@carlosmatos9848 it is insane in there, as an electrical engineer, this took some development time, the pcb has been revised once, has a spot for a spare chip, there's very little chance anyone would do that kind of digging. If they do....bravo to them.

Both 60s Plexis, One has the bradshaw gain mod and the other has and extra tube for gain.

Crappy digital amp, had all bunch of those Marshall, Fender, Boss digital amps and they will NEVER beat an analog OD dude, digital OD sucks period! Fx are good, but the main OD tone just plain suck! Specially for a Green Day tone! Theses amps are for U2 users!

Low gain sounds great, but on high gain it gets too mushy and fuzzy. Not enough tightness there
