      600 calories . i eat whole foods like potatoes and jam sandwiches, peanutbutter crackers, carb drinks. but for me, less is MORE. i respond better to 90-180 calories per hour than 80g carbs in an hour.

      I struggle to get to my daily recommended 2200 calories... let alone 7000! On a regular ride around Geneva (CH) where I live, as an absolute noob and amateur, at most I've eaten 700 calories. I think it was at a local Canadian food truck that serves poutine. And I was really full...

      On a more serious note, since a bigger rider would burn more calories than a smaller rider when riding the same course at the same pace, wasn't it a bit unfair (or overly ambitious) to give Manon the same 7,000 calorie goal as Connor?

    I met a man who did a multi-week solo kayak trip. He had to carry as much of his own supplies as possible. He started the trip INTENTIONALLY 30 pounds overweight. At the end of the expedition, he was actually underweight. The strategy was to carry a lot of calories in reserve by being overweight at the start. Probably not a good strategy for bike racing, but I wonder how it would be for a long endurance ride, such as a ride across America, or a relatively uninhabited area such as Mongolia.

    I was eating my lunch watching this and you guys managed to put me off it and made me feel sick! Omg! How did Manon manage to eat all that and still ride her bike? As for Conor! Well he's twice the size of Manon and after watching other films with him in I think it was just a normal days food intake for him!😂😂😂😂 Riders don't actually take on board the amount of calories they expend! Their bodies are used to going into deficit while still being able to crank out the watts! I reckon a top rider will maybe only take on maybe an extra 20 - 30% of carbs during a race. Otherwise they'd need the toilet rather rapidly. The deficit gets repaid later.

I figured I ate well over 1000 bananas a year. Breakfast was like eating 4 breakfasts, that makes it much easier, I'm not a natural breakfast eater, but I noticed when I ate breakfast I became hungry earlier, and just felt like I needed more food throughout the day. I did the Grandfondo last year in June when the temperature was touching 40⁰c I and a couple of Italians stopped to have geleto somewhere on the coast. It took me around 9 hours , I burned just under 6000 calories. The day before I did what is called a metabolism ride of 3 hours but really easy zone 1 so it would increase my hunger plus I had being carb loading for about 4 days before one the ride I was consuming 90g carbs an hour at a body weight of 66kg.

    I have friends that do the taco 100. 100 miles in the desert while eating 100 tacos(which were medium size) in 100 miles. It was a grand ole time. All sober. They also do the pizza 50 where in 50 miles have to eat a small(not the smaller personal) pizza on a gravel route through some tough mountains also in the desert in the South Western US. If done right a single burrito or burger could easily be 900 calories alone. Then add fries and a drink to easily make it a total of 1500.

    Hilarious and ohhhhh, barf... Pretty impressive about of sugar and carbs you gobbled down..I think I saw a romaine leaf and maybe some eggplant to the 'good'. Would be interesting to know just HOW MANY of those 3-4000+ calories you actually burnt off. oi.. Happy recovery and YES, I WILL BE WATCHING MSR ON GCN+ in the USA.

    The problem I had on Ultra “events” ( not bragging I didn’t win, I just manage to finish them was my best effort) it’s hard to eat enough and worse you lose weight and your bibs don’t fit. This causes you a bucket of discomfort. I learned the hard way to eat all the time nuts chocolate berries fruit milkshake etc. that way I managed to eat 2
    X full meals a day at cafe stops. The weight was lost and the bibs were uncomfortable. I. Ow pack a smaller pair of bibs to swap into when needed.

    Instead of this calorie bacchanal, here's an idea: why don't you put your best descender (probably Hank) at the top of the Poggio with both a regular race bike AND a race bike with a dropper post and time his descents with each bike?

    • @gcn
      @gcn  ปีที่แล้ว

      We do actually have a video on this subject. Years before it was used in racing! th-cam.com/video/yeEaeY25Amg/w-d-xo.html

      @@gcn Fair enough. And with Dan performing the experiment nonetheless. However, the Poggio is a shorter descent with more severe hairpin turns that what Dan seems to be descending in the Alps. Might have been interesting to assess what the real time difference is in such a short and nervous descent. It seems it was a good enough difference for Mahoric to claim victory, but how many seconds are we talking here?

    If there's ever a second part of this video, go to Asturias. One stop in the average restaurant will be more than enough to cover 7000 calories. Just make sure it is after climbing the Angliru.
