  • Join me in Oxfordshire as I search for one of the UK's largest birds of prey - the red kite. As well as lots of success with the kites, I was fortunate to see a kestrel up close as well as a roe deer.

I loved the images you captured and the video. The deer bouncing along was very sweet too.
    I really enjoy your channel.
You are very talented and are doing all the right things to grow your channel.
Viewers should know that no matter what, make a comment big or small. Because comments along with the number of views helps the TH-cam algorithms.
So my suggestion is ask viewers to comment and subscribe and it will make it easier for others to find the channel.
Best wishes for a Happy Healthy New Year. :-)

The deer was a really lovely surprise and thank you so much for the comment and the support for my channel, it really does mean a lot! And I will take that recommendation and try to nudge people to make comments towards the start of future videos :) Happy New Year!

Thanks Amanda, I always love seeing kestrels, it’s one of the few species I manage to see even when living in London. And yes the red kites are pretty spectacular especially when you get up close!

Loved the video and images Olly, here in Welwyn Garden City the Red Kites are doing really well and are not afraid to fly quite close to you, saw one on the roof of a house walking to sainsbury this morning, a real good successful introduction and hopefully some more for the rest of our birds of prey and our other declining wildlife. Happy New Year.

Thanks Raymond and that’s great to hear, so lovely to see wildlife locally and as you say, there will hopefully be more success stories in the near future.

Great video! In my local area, I have actually never seen a Red Kite! Hopefully, at some point, some will drift over... the shots at the end as well were amazing🔥

Hi Robin, thank you for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m sure those one or two will soon become more regular sightings, I’ve even started seeing the odd one above Richmond Park in London.

Hey Oliver, what was that agricultural crop at the beginning?
The 300 prime with the 2x TC plus crop factor of the 7D should be giving you a total focal length of, what? 760mm?
Regardless I have had a thought regarding your lens system. As you know, 300mm is not enough to really get the kind of images you want of such subjects as the owls and kites. So, you have added on a 2x T.C. to give you a reach out to 600mm. Well that's good but at what cost to available light? The T.C. "eats" a lot of light. So, even with the f/2.8 on your 300 you still lose light.
And this was one thing I noticed about your photography in this video. The images were dark. Granted the ambient light was pretty bad, but! Have you considered mating your 7D Mk2 with a Sigma 150-600mm zoom telephoto lens? This is my combo. The Sigma gets me out to 600mm without a T.C. I'm not sure how the numbers would add up but the f/5 on the Sigma might give more light than the stopped down-ness of the 300's 2.8 with a 2x T.C. And, of course, the zoom gives you a flexibility you don't have with the 300 prime.
I'd be very interested in your thoughts.

Hey, I used to have a tamron 150-600mm but I prefer having the f2.8 at 300mm as it means I can continue shooting at a low ISO right up until dusk and often I find that’s the time when animals come closer so I don’t necessarily need that extra reach. I guess they can’t see as well when it gets dark so they approach as they’re a bit more curious

I agree with all you are saying. Ireland is so much better for wildlife than the UK but we are losing it rapidly and our population is expanding. That location is fab.

It’s tough but I’m starting to see positive steps and there are definitely ways to live alongside wildlife if enough people want it and get on board!

How ho you find 7d mk ii af and image quality ? Do you think dslr are death or make sense to buy one of those in 2024 for sport and wildlife ? Thanks 👍

    • @wildlifewitholly

Hi, it’s still a great lens and I now use it alongside the R6 mkii which is my main lens. I still get use from the 7d mkii though and would recommend it for wildlife and sport, high frames per second and good af options but it’s all about the lens you pair it with. If you can get your hands on a second hand one that might be a good option, shouldn’t be too expensive!
