    Here it is 2023 and the Canon EOS 7D mk2 is still relevant. Hard to beat the functionality of this camera. Bought mine when it first was available, traded the original 7D. Hands down one of Canon best action cameras for the money.

    Up until COVID hit (causing me to miss events for the past year...) I shoot primarily on a 7d in with the EF-S 17-55 2.8. I cover Motorsports primarily with Diesel drag racing and sled pulling. I have shot MANY national magazine cover shots with the camera as I did previously with my original 7d. My son still shoots on the 7d with an EF 24-105 f4L when we are both shooting.
    At some point I may step up to an R series mirrorless camera but with my nearly nonexistent budget and the relatively short battery life of the various EOS R models, I'll be sticking with my 7d ii for the foreseeable future. I do wish it had the articulating screen though... haha
    Thanks for your videos.

    Recently, I've been thinking of giving this camera unit a second go. So far, I've owned the 1D III, 1Ds III, 1D IV, 7D II, and now the 1Dx. While the latter has been my favorite for anything I throw at it, the 7D II keeps reminding me of its incredible ergonomics, size, and autofocus. Seriously, it's a baby 1Dx.

      Scott Kelby did a review several years ago of the 7D Mark II, and he called it the "little brother" of Canon's then top-of-the-line full-frame. I bought two 7D Mark II bodies rather than one full-frame camera, but I'm using full-frame lenses with the 7D.

    I still love it. Traveled round the world with it without issues. Upgrade with a used 5dIII - but often the 7dII is the first choice. Both the same layout, perfect to swap according to the conditions.

    I agree with everything you've said about this camera. My old 7D died recently and I've replaced it with a 7D mk.2. It's really fast and in AI servo mode with 65 cross point focus points it captures moving images with pin - sharp clarity.

    By coincidence, I just yesterday sold my beloved 7D to KEH, and got a 7D Mk II instead, which should arrive in a couple of days. I'm really looking forward to putting it through its paces.
    As other folks have commented, any camera (or any piece of equipment, for that matter) is still relevant as long as it does what you need it to do. As a professional musician, I've put up with "planned obsolescence" from the musical instrument industry for decades. Yet, my favorite synthesizer of all time, the Ensoniq TS-12, lasted me from 1992 until 2020. 28 years of steady, reliable usage, even as the instrument makers continually pushed out new gear and technology each year. Similarly, my beloved OG 300D, which I bought in 2003, still does fine work for me. Besides the 7D Mk II coming soon, my camera bag has a 20D and a 1DX Mk III, plus a variety of decent lenses. Although the industry is moving toward mirrorless, I'm quite happy with my DSLRs, and don't see a need to invest in the latest hardware, since what I have is more than enough to suit all my needs.

    I'm a wildlife photographer. This camera has been my workhorse in every single project I had to undertake since 2015. I shoot exclusively in Africa a lot of times under harsh weather and it never failed to deliver tack sharp photos, accurately exposed even under very low light conditions. The autofocus is brilliant, it's burst mode very fast. If I could improve this beast a little bit more.....it would be the noise levels at high ISO. Regards from Greece!

  • @pappap3788

    Was the first person to own commercially in the UK at the time, the Pentax K100D and the Canon 7D MKI. I then had the Canon 7D MKII until last year and it served me very well during many professional sport shoots. I also had the Canon 5D MKIV.
    I am now on to Canon 1DX MKI & MKII plus Canon 5D MKIV. All three serve the purpose they were intended for. May be in the next year's Christmas stocking I might also aquire the Canon 1DX MKIII.....that all depends on the mrs!
    The 7D MKII should not be underestimated as many a credible professional Canon tog will have the camera placed handy for fast delivery at a shoot.
    May be Canon might deliver a varient of a 7D MKIII in the near future. DSLR's are no way dead yet and personally, until mirrorless camera systems can sort out rolling shutter, curtain lag and have a system whereby the EV screen does not interfer with eye strain due to the refresh rate, then maybe dslr users may move over to mirrorless.

    Hi, just now, in november 2021, I changed my D7 to D7 mark ll (hard to find it in stores!) I am truck editor in popular automotive magazine, travel a lot and making a lot of pictures. My D7 worked almost 12 years as a armored tank - in any weather, in tough conditions, placed on hard ground etc. I use mainly two lenses, 10-22 and 24-105, they are not heavy and its enough for most of my tasks. Again: i am making monthly magazine in A3 format with this camera year by year and think that D7 is best solution for me.

    Brilliant. I just bought a used 7D Mark II with a shutter count of 1,500 for a reasonable price, which I’m pairing with an also used L series 400mm prime plus a Canon 1.4iii extender for birds, and I’m having a blast. The 10 fps is awesome. The image quality is lovely. And yes, I try to shoot in good light with an ISO at or below 1600. But mercy, this is a great piece of gear. And the crop sensor gives me more reach, which I treasure. Thank you for a very positive review of what I consider a bird photographer's friend.

    Great video. Marketing and hype gets people thinking they need the newest cameras to be professional. The hype over the R5 definitely got to me I will say haha but I am comfortable knowing I can stick with my 7Dmkii for as long as I need just fine. When you get the lighitng, focus, etc. all right the images out of it are spectacular.
    Ideally I’d keep my 7Dmkii along with any full frame sensor camera I get.

    Thank you, it’s another 3 years on but choice between 90d and 7d Mk 11 still as relevant. Would like an R7, but budget is the issue. I also want to carry on using my Tamron 18-400mm, fantastic general lens and heard it looses speed AF when adapting to mirrorless. Cheers L&S

  • @WolfQuantum
    @WolfQuantum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm moving from Sony APS-C mirrorless (great cameras btw) to a Canon 6D for full frame. I'm spending the real money on the glass. Can't swing Canon L, but just got a Tamron SD 24-70mm 2.8 DI VC USD G2 lens with the Tamron 70-200 next. If I need high ISO the 6D will handle it. What I'm really looking to do is also add a solid, also weather sealed APS-C body to use those same lenses with. Particularly for the telephoto side or if I need a bit better burst rate over the 6D. The 7D Mk II sounds like just the right one for the job. Appreciate the video. I do really like my Sony a6000s with the primes I have, but having full frame and weather sealing on the 6D and getting a tough, sealed, capable APS-C body that can use the same lenses that are NOT cheap makes for a nice bit of kit.

    Nice video. May give my 7D Mark II a second look. At the time it was the only camera I owned that worked with one AF point at f/8 when using a 1.4x extender. For birds in flight, one AF point missed a lot of shots. When the Canon 80D came out with 27 AF points at f/8, using the 1.4x extender III, the 7D Mark II went on the shelf. For wildlife shots not requiring an extender, this may be an interesting alternative.
    Hoping for a really cold winter, that will freeze up most of the surrounding lakes and bring large numbers of Bald Eagles to remaining open areas. For fast moving, close flybys, the 7D II without an extender worked great.

  • @philtaylor194
    @philtaylor194 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Owned one for 4 years. I use one paired with a 5D3. The crop sensor is great with long lenses, e.g a 300 is nearly a 500. It takes a wireless card, so jobs can be away to the agency quickly if needed. It's weather sealed, and copes with heavy rain. It's rugged- dropped one a metre onto a concrete cowshed floor, wiped the poo off and carried on with the job, noticed the dent in the mode dial weeks later.. AF is perfect for sport along with the fast drive. Quality is spot on, it's had pictures published in every major national UK paper, except the FT, recently a half page in the Guardian.
    The downside is due to the smaller sensor grain can be a bit awful, but at max ISO I've happily shot crime scenes with a 75 to 300 Canon L in street light, and had work acceptable for news use.
    If I could pick one camera between 7D series and 5D series I would grab the 7D2. Of course if had a 5D4, it might be a better pick, but the drive is far slower.

    • @RobSambles
      @RobSambles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. Have been using that combo since last October, and it is stellar. I think its a good camera and would like Canon to continue with a mark III. The only thing I can complain about is the noise when going up to 6400 or more. I also sometime experience that the camera struggles to find focus in ai servo and low light. But overall a great camera for that price

    Thanks very much Rob. It is great to get this advice about the Canon 7D mark II from a professional. I have this camera and I wanting to get out there and start photographing birds. I have read posts from professional wedding, wildlife and sports photographers who are making a living out of using micro four thirds cameras. None of their clients ever complains about the photographs. So with the bigger sensor on the 7D mark II it should be fine. As you say, no one has complained about your images being apsc ones.

    I got the 7D when it came out and it's a fine camera, I still have mine. If you're going to do portraits at ISO 100 or shoot in daylight it's fine. I do a lot of music photography in small
    clubs so high ISO is the rule of the day. This is where crop sensors can and do fall short. If you don't mind the noise, fine. For the kind of photography I do full frame is the way
    to go. I got a 6D and also have a Nikon D810, another full frame camera. If you're doing studio portraits with strobes at ISO 100 then just about any good camera on the market
    is fine. If you live in the world of high ISO like I do then you have to be pickier. I am keeping my 7D as it IS a fine camera. No regrets in getting it :-)

    I have a 7dii and been using it for a years for wildlife and sports. It complements my 5ds well with similar pixel density and senior. It's an absolute bargain and has great image quality. With new AI, I can push the ISO to 3200 and even got images from 6400 from martial arts shots! The flicker function is amazing too for indoor sports. I have shot newer bodies (Sony, Canon, and Leica), but I'd rather buy a better glass that holds the value better.

I'm glad I watched this video as I have a Nikon D500 which came out just over a year after the 7D mk2 and yes they are both great cameras and there's plenty of life in them yet. As you say, can people really tell by looking at an image which camera it was taken with. As long as you know your camera and its limitations, you can get some great shots. Great channel which is very informative with some great tips - looking forward to seeing future content.

    I have had a 7d for the last 5 years. used for all sorts animal portraits, birds, landscapes and macro . I have been toying with going for a 7dmkii or 5d mkiii, just cannot make up my mind, I like the better reach with the APSC. now in 2021 I wonder if either of these are worth upgrading too.

    I have the 7dii as well and love it. Have been debating between getting a second one and upgrading my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 to Canon, or getting a 1DXii. With junior hockey shut down it’s given me more time to debate. Your thoughts?

    Still using my 7D and have a like new 7D II so I think I'm good for a while. My only concern is printing size do to the lower Megapixel in contrast to new cameras. I also have the 5D MKII.

    • @pauloviegas7957
      @pauloviegas7957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the printing size matter let me tell you a thing... I do at least an exhibition per year and I like to print nice (big) sizes. i have no problem whatsoever with doing 70x50cm prints with this camera, and even if you put your nose against the photo you won't have complaints.

    The 7D mk2 is gonna be my next buy... Currently using a pair of 1D mk4s - any thoughts on how they compare to the 7D mk2, Rob?

    • @RobSambles
      @RobSambles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really used the 1d4 to be honest but I believe the general opinion is that they're on a par with the 7d2 in most areas. AF is supposed to be a stepup though which is obviously great for sport

    Thanks Rob. I've been using a bridge camera for bird photography and want to level up. After watching your video and others, and was convinced I should buy a second hand 7dii with a tamron 100-400mm lense as the 100-400 second generation lense is out of budget. However, I've been tempted by others to go for a new fujifilm x-s10 with a 70-300mm lens. It is light in the hands compared to the 7dii combination, but doesn't have weather proofing, has a bad battery life and I'm not sure how the auto focus compares to the 7dii. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions of the way to go?

    • @RobSambles
      @RobSambles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I don't have any experience with the Sony Bryan but on the Canon side that setup the 7dii with the Tamron would do well I'm sure

    So looking to upgrade EOS M50, would you recommend 7dii over 90D or should I look into Canon 5D MIV for sport photography (indoor ice-hockey, soccer etc. low light stuff) ? Looking to pair it with EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM (got deal on used IS version, cheaper than alternative non-IS so figured why not). Also would used 5D MIV be even better option ?

    • @RobSambles
      @RobSambles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used a 90d but from the specs and other opinions I've heard, I think they're very similar

    • @jrd33
      @jrd33 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 90d is generally a bit better because it is much newer. However it is not as tough, AF is not as good and it lacks a few 'pro' features which the 7DII has. I believe 90d has better IQ, better video, better low light performance, articulated touch screen, better battery life so it depends how much these matter to you.
