I remember seeing a row of blacksmiths all making parts for the steam engines, boiler makers hammering away in the workshop; the noise was deafening. I worked for the building maintenance section and our department used to make the station signs that are still visible today. There were welding shops, sheet metal workshops, mechanical shops etc. The place was very busy. I also remember the story of the station master that has a injury (I think it was his leg) and could not change the points for the trains from one track to the next. So he trained a baboon to do the job for him. I'm sure your followers living in this area can comment on this. Thank you once again for a great episode.

The baboon's name was Jack. 🦍 Wikipedia says he was the 'pet and assistant of double leg amputee signalman James Wide'. He trained Jack 'to push his wheelchair and to operate the railway signals under supervision.' Incredible stuff! 😳
Batavia is a name that goes back at least to Roman times. It was an "island" in the Rhine delta and was the home of the Batavii tribe, who were Roman subjects/ allies. They became famous mercenaries with a reputation for being among the best soldiers in the Empire (in terms of not just skill, but also in terms of loyalty - "my word is my bond" stuff). For the history that goes beyond that you can take what I say with an even bigger pinch of salt, but I think they were leaders in one of the smaller kingdoms that arose after the Germanic invasions that ended the Western Roman Empire, that still called itself "Roman". They were either neighbours or progenitors of the Franks. (The Franks that invaded Northern Gaul, and eventually gave their name to France. En miskien hulle brei, ook, said he in a secret code.) I'm probably making too much of this, but Fontainebleau, which you'd expect to be pronounced "fawng-ten-blur" is pronounced with a proper Afrikaans "blou" at the end - almost as if it was originally called "Bloufontein". It's a royal something or other (that I've also forgotten - possibly an early capital town). Frankish. Short version of this shortcut history: The French were once Afrikaans. (Well Dutch, but second best is good enough.) A more important long term consequence of Batavia having once been at least partly Roman is that the Dutch Republic, when Amsterdam went through its time of being the New York of the world, could claim a link back to Roman Law, as their own (since they'd been part of the Empire.) This gave a rationale for their jurists adopting Roman law for the new world they'd begun to create, where the old Germanic customary law of so much of Northern Europe was starting to get in the way of commercial progress, and hence, the modern world. Anyway, you wondered to yourself what this Batavia thing is, and it turns out to be quite a deep rabbit hole a Jack Russell can go to ground in, and bark a lot about for weeks or months on end. I think maybe there are people who have put their whole lives into studying what Batavia means, even?

Hi guys Uitenhague yet again another surprise i knew there was car industry in the area but didn't know the size very impressive VW plant loved the museum i had a vw variant in South Africa also drove vw van so was really interesting to me especially Herbie the bug .huge tyre factory's i also loved the Goodyear sign. I was sure at the size of the mosque the law courts were amazing with the Victoria Tower the Royal crest was interesting the old French was spoken by the higher people the ordinary people spoke English witch is why we eat beef and not cow beouf is French and Richard was also king of a lot of France the park was stunning and looked very European apart from the cow pats industry memorial from the Basuto war i always enjoy driving through the suburbs lovely big houses and gardens. The station museum will be great when its done up all the old trains and carriages the turn table and the old station sad to see not in use but still great to see. Drone footage spot on the old church wouldn't look out of place in a English village especially with the war memorial and Queen's bell tower RIP stunning video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
This is for sure car country and we saw that everywhere! 🚙🚗 That VW plant is huge, it was actually incredible to see! This part of town was very busy with a lot going on, so the automotive industry is clearly alive and well! Victoria Tower was an astonishingly beautiful building and thankfully still so well-preserved! I wish the Station Museum will open its doors again and those locos restored too! 🚂😍

I was really taken aback (positively) re this episode as I have been so keen to see this town for such a long time. The VW Factory is immense and the museum interesting...and there she was in the Dustbugs signature color, the original bug...my German friend in Paarl would be pleased to know that the iconic Volksie Bus boasts his hometown's "number plate" ...the gorgeous Victorian style public building, your stunning Guesthouse incredibly well appointed room...WOW and stunning location to boot. I was really impressed, much better than I imagined. I help another friend who has fallen on hard times who stays there and order, almost on a weekly basis, from the Checkers at the Corkwood centre, which is in close proximity to the VW plant. The Catholic Church is in incredible condition and such a beautiful stonework creation. Stunning!

This place has incredible buildings, trees and industries and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting it! The Volkswagen plant goes on for, I want to say miles and miles, and is actually rather impressive. I had to rush through the museum, but some of those vehicles are super fascinating!
Thank you for this video, I was so glad to see St Katherine's church. My grandparents were married there in the 30's and my grandfather's brother's name is on the plaque honouring those who died during WW2. (R.H. Williams).

Aha leuk, de treinen, de rails en ook weer zo’n ‘draaischijf’ zijn terug op de route! Jammer dat het treinmuseum kennelijk niet meer open is, wel gaaf dat een voormalige treinemployee reageerde op deze episode met dat geweldige baboon verhaal. Je zou er graag een filmpje van willen zien hoe dat destijds ging. Verder ook weer een heerlijke aflevering, over de stad die een stedenband heeft met onze stad Alkmaar en inderdaad ontstond toen Nederland eventjes de Bataafse Republiek was, als uitvloeisel van de Franse Napoleon tijd. Grappig dat die vaderlandse geschiedenis voorbij kwam. De Volkswagen, mijn vader had ooit een Kever waar ik graag in zat, achter de achterbank in de ‘kattenbak’ zoals we dat noemden. Die auto startte altijd, zelfs in de ijskoude winter van 1978. Het witte, ultra moderne exemplaar, is dat een elektrische auto? Kun je in Zuid-Afrika elektrisch rijden, zijn er voldoende oplaadpunten? Toen je sprak over de ‘manicured garden’ dacht ik direct aan de stripverhaal helden Asterix & Obelix, de beroemde Galliërs. Als ze in Groot-Brittannië zijn, heeft een Brit zojuist het laatste sprietje gras van zijn ‘green’ keurig afgeknipt en kijkt goedkeurend naar het resultaat en … dan denderen de 2 helden met hun bakkie dwars door zijn tuin heen, met een legioen Romeinen achter zich aan 😂🤣. Op 16:30 minuten trouwens een fraai oud koffiehuis, maar niets gaat boven jullie eigen cuppa’s in wederom een goed gekozen accommodatie!
I don't think I would survive seeing Jack, the baboon, changing signals at a train station! 😳🦍 Very interesting that Kariega has a link with Alkmaar, I didn't know that! There is just no getting away from the very close ties between our two countries! 🇿🇦🇳🇱 I have no idea if the white car is an electric one, there was no sign up and the employees were on their way out the door, so I couldn't ask them either! It sure looked very futuristic! Sonia often tells me how she already saw charging stations for electric cars in your country when she visited in 2014. It's slowly becoming more common here, but we don't see them all that often. We don't really look for them, so could be missing them as well! 🚙🔌🤷♂️
Recall my STD 2 Social Study class learning about the Batavian Republic & Governor der Mist 1956 a life time ago . Uitenhage sure is so different to when I visited early 1990's Beautiful , Clean & more modern today -Thank you .

From Kariega too Wolvefontein in the "Klein Winterberge was the farm of my 5 x grandfather, Gert Stefanus Vermaak (mother side), b 1803 who trekked to the Transvaal in the 1840's according to genealogy. Thanks for the video, was never there before.....must visit for me
I have visited Uitenhage quite a few times to visit friends but next time I will definitely visit the Volkswagen showroom. Just love your accommodation...one big open plan kitchen...with everything included 😊. I just wonder why, for the last 4 videos I do not get the notification to my cellphone anymore...I have to go check in youtube to see if there are new videos. I have unsubscribed and subscribed again but no change.
You will love the museum, just remember they close @ 16:00, so give yourself enough time! 🚙😍 Our accommodation was stunning, we were super comfortable there! 🏡 I know there are sometimes glitches with TH-cam's notifications and hopefully the issue resolves itself. Our videos will always consistently go live @ 6:30 SA time on the same four days a week. 😁

We were also surprised that it was such an old town! The buildings, especially the Victoria Tower and the church, completely blew our minds! 😍💒🏛️ I would've had a job on my hands with that turntable, this one was a tad heavy! 😳🚂

Lovely to see my home town lived in uitenhage most of my life. They used to say that the train divided uitenhage on one side lives the rich and on the other people who lived just above the breadline. That house you passed with the manicure garden, I used to go to a private school, only a few kids went. The owners allowed us to use their downstairs for schooling. That area you spent the night at is one of the posher areas in uitenhage. You also mentioned a Mr demist, now there is an area in uitenhage called demist. It's a pity you didn't go to the museum in uitenhage in town that gives the history of uitenhage. There is also another house farm museum that also shares history. When you live somewhere for a very long time you stop noticing things like the structures of buildings because you get so used to it. But when both of you admired that beautiful building and church in town it gave me a new appreciation for it, especially when you talked about the emblem because I never knew or even bothered doing research of it. Thank you for sharing the information. It's so sad to see the public pool looking like that, it holds alot of memories for me when I was younger. Thank you so much for showing your travels through my home town I haven't been there since 2016. Also great view with the drone. Thank you both so much ❤

Hi you two! What a trip full of surprises! I can not keep up with the renaming of places these days, so I didn't know Uitenhage is now Kariega. What a surprise then to be invited into a Kariega factory by a "willkommen"! The Volkswagen exhibit with the Bugs and the Combi took me back to my teens. It is a beautiful town, especially the suburbs you visited with the variety of green trees and beautiful impressive houses. Your drone view added to this in no small measure. It is sad that some places are delapidated and vandalised, but all in all I think that, for such a big town, they managed not to forget their heritage, at least not as far as major events and times go. The Victoria Tower is breathtaking. Few thing could be more fascinating and peaceful than your walk around the beautiful St Katharine's, with that rugged stone church and pigeons cooing all around. Your stayover looked cozy -- with cuppas no less! Thank you for taking me along. This was really special. Keep safe!

It was a very interesting town, just crazy busy, which we didn't quite expect! 🚙😨 It was on the chilly side, but fortunately both the heater in the Kwiddie and at our accommodation did the trick, so we were nice and toasty. When I wasn't filming out of the window, that is! 😬
The Colonial buildings are so beautiful. You should come and visit Fremantle (Western Australia) if you want to see street upon street filled with buildings similar to the Victoria public building (Old Law court) in this video.

Visited Uitenage years ago, but I must admit I'm struggling with all the new names for various places! The VW museum looks interesting. Didn't get to see it at the time. As an aside, so many of your old buildings are very similar to those in Australia, in such places as Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne, built in the gold rush era of the mid to late 1800's.
You're not alone, we also don't always know the name of a place has changed until we start planning our route and so it was with Kariega too! The VW museum is definitely worth a visit, I was fortunate to arrive just before closing time to have a peek! 🚙😁 It does sound like there are beautiful colonial buildings in Australia and we can't wait to go and check out those one day too! 😍🏰

That beautiful building was the old law courts/post office. The second church was the original Dutch Reform Church and behind is the later church. The college used to be the old Muir College (High School). Yes, it is the same park! It is a pitty you missed Cannon Hill, the old railway Station, the Drosdy Museum, and Cuyler Manor. The station does not function for passenger trains anymore due to railway lines being stolen. Unfortunately, you have also missed the Concentration Camp. It is indeed the WINTERHOEK Mountains and the Cockscombe Mountains. Valley Bushveld County Lodge also hosts 16 giraffes - the only giraffes in the grater Addo area.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to list the places we 'missed' in your opinion. 🚙😁 You may be new to our channel and may therefore not know that we're not fussed in the slightest about anything we don't get to see or visit in any town or place we travel to. We always travel on an extremely tight time schedule and only have limited time available in each town. We document our journey for fun and are just too grateful for anything we do get to see.

You need to do at least a Google search on a place before you go there, please. You missed Cuyler Manor, which is probably the most historic site in or near Uitenhage. You couldn't visit the dam, because you didn't know that you had to contact the municipality. Also. The VW museum has the last VW Golf to ever come off the production line. This was an absolute spiritual sight for a Golf driver. (My first 3 cars were Golfs.) You missed the museum because of lack of research. (Just Google It) I enjoy the channel, but you guys do this A LOT! Coming from the Eastern Cape, I feel there is a lot you still need to cover in the places you have already visited. Historic places and important facts. It makes me wonder about the places you missed in the shows of places I have watched, but have not been. Please just Google a place before you go there at least.
Uhm, last time I checked, this was our channel where we show how we travel and we see what we want to see and how we choose to see it, NOT what you want to see or how you want us to see it. 🚙😁 I have a brilliant suggestion for you: research every single place you want to see, spend the money to fill up your vehicle, hit the road and visit every place and film everything you want to see. As simple as that! And make no mistake that we will continue travelling EXACTLY the way we have to up to now because that is how we love doing it. It remains entirely your choice to watch. 🤷🏻♂️

Fortunately ours isn't a language channel, but a travel channel, so we're not too fussed about such things, as we always take great care with place names and don't deliberately mispronounce any. 🤷♂️

This is for sure car country and we saw that everywhere! 🚙🚗 That VW plant is huge, it was actually incredible to see! This part of town was very busy with a lot going on, so the automotive industry is clearly alive and well! Victoria Tower was an astonishingly beautiful building and thankfully still so well-preserved! I wish the Station Museum will open its doors again and those locos restored too! 🚂😍

I was really taken aback (positively) re this episode as I have been so keen to see this town for such a long time. The VW Factory is immense and the museum interesting...and there she was in the Dustbugs signature color, the original bug...my German friend in Paarl would be pleased to know that the iconic Volksie Bus boasts his hometown's "number plate" ...the gorgeous Victorian style public building, your stunning Guesthouse incredibly well appointed room...WOW and stunning location to boot. I was really impressed, much better than I imagined. I help another friend who has fallen on hard times who stays there and order, almost on a weekly basis, from the Checkers at the Corkwood centre, which is in close proximity to the VW plant. The Catholic Church is in incredible condition and such a beautiful stonework creation. Stunning!

This place has incredible buildings, trees and industries and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting it! The Volkswagen plant goes on for, I want to say miles and miles, and is actually rather impressive. I had to rush through the museum, but some of those vehicles are super fascinating!

Aha leuk, de treinen, de rails en ook weer zo’n ‘draaischijf’ zijn terug op de route! Jammer dat het treinmuseum kennelijk niet meer open is, wel gaaf dat een voormalige treinemployee reageerde op deze episode met dat geweldige baboon verhaal. Je zou er graag een filmpje van willen zien hoe dat destijds ging. Verder ook weer een heerlijke aflevering, over de stad die een stedenband heeft met onze stad Alkmaar en inderdaad ontstond toen Nederland eventjes de Bataafse Republiek was, als uitvloeisel van de Franse Napoleon tijd. Grappig dat die vaderlandse geschiedenis voorbij kwam. De Volkswagen, mijn vader had ooit een Kever waar ik graag in zat, achter de achterbank in de ‘kattenbak’ zoals we dat noemden. Die auto startte altijd, zelfs in de ijskoude winter van 1978. Het witte, ultra moderne exemplaar, is dat een elektrische auto? Kun je in Zuid-Afrika elektrisch rijden, zijn er voldoende oplaadpunten? Toen je sprak over de ‘manicured garden’ dacht ik direct aan de stripverhaal helden Asterix & Obelix, de beroemde Galliërs. Als ze in Groot-Brittannië zijn, heeft een Brit zojuist het laatste sprietje gras van zijn ‘green’ keurig afgeknipt en kijkt goedkeurend naar het resultaat en … dan denderen de 2 helden met hun bakkie dwars door zijn tuin heen, met een legioen Romeinen achter zich aan 😂🤣. Op 16:30 minuten trouwens een fraai oud koffiehuis, maar niets gaat boven jullie eigen cuppa’s in wederom een goed gekozen accommodatie!

There is just no getting away from the very close ties between our two countries! 🇿🇦🇳🇱 I have no idea if the white car is an electric one, there was no sign up and the employees were on their way out the door, so I couldn't ask them either! It sure looked very futuristic! Sonia often tells me how she already saw charging stations for electric cars in your country when she visited in 2014. It's slowly becoming more common here, but we don't see them all that often. We don't really look for them, so could be missing them as well! 🚙🔌🤷♂️

From Kariega too Wolvefontein in the "Klein Winterberge was the farm of my 5 x grandfather, Gert Stefanus Vermaak (mother side), b 1803 who trekked to the Transvaal in the 1840's according to genealogy. Thanks for the video, was never there before.....must visit for me

I have visited Uitenhage quite a few times to visit friends but next time I will definitely visit the Volkswagen showroom. Just love your accommodation...one big open plan kitchen...with everything included 😊. I just wonder why, for the last 4 videos I do not get the notification to my cellphone anymore...I have to go check in youtube to see if there are new videos. I have unsubscribed and subscribed again but no change.
You will love the museum, just remember they close @ 16:00, so give yourself enough time! 🚙😍 Our accommodation was stunning, we were super comfortable there! 🏡 I know there are sometimes glitches with TH-cam's notifications and hopefully the issue resolves itself. Our videos will always consistently go live @ 6:30 SA time on the same four days a week. 😁

We were also surprised that it was such an old town! The buildings, especially the Victoria Tower and the church, completely blew our minds! 😍💒🏛️ I would've had a job on my hands with that turntable, this one was a tad heavy! 😳🚂

Lovely to see my home town lived in uitenhage most of my life. They used to say that the train divided uitenhage on one side lives the rich and on the other people who lived just above the breadline. That house you passed with the manicure garden, I used to go to a private school, only a few kids went. The owners allowed us to use their downstairs for schooling. That area you spent the night at is one of the posher areas in uitenhage. You also mentioned a Mr demist, now there is an area in uitenhage called demist. It's a pity you didn't go to the museum in uitenhage in town that gives the history of uitenhage. There is also another house farm museum that also shares history. When you live somewhere for a very long time you stop noticing things like the structures of buildings because you get so used to it. But when both of you admired that beautiful building and church in town it gave me a new appreciation for it, especially when you talked about the emblem because I never knew or even bothered doing research of it. Thank you for sharing the information. It's so sad to see the public pool looking like that, it holds alot of memories for me when I was younger. Thank you so much for showing your travels through my home town I haven't been there since 2016. Also great view with the drone. Thank you both so much ❤

Hi you two! What a trip full of surprises! I can not keep up with the renaming of places these days, so I didn't know Uitenhage is now Kariega. What a surprise then to be invited into a Kariega factory by a "willkommen"! The Volkswagen exhibit with the Bugs and the Combi took me back to my teens. It is a beautiful town, especially the suburbs you visited with the variety of green trees and beautiful impressive houses. Your drone view added to this in no small measure. It is sad that some places are delapidated and vandalised, but all in all I think that, for such a big town, they managed not to forget their heritage, at least not as far as major events and times go. The Victoria Tower is breathtaking. Few thing could be more fascinating and peaceful than your walk around the beautiful St Katharine's, with that rugged stone church and pigeons cooing all around.

It was a very interesting town, just crazy busy, which we didn't quite expect! 🚙😨 It was on the chilly side, but fortunately both the heater in the Kwiddie and at our accommodation did the trick, so we were nice and toasty. When I wasn't filming out of the window, that is! 😬
The Colonial buildings are so beautiful. You should come and visit Fremantle (Western Australia) if you want to see street upon street filled with buildings similar to the Victoria public building (Old Law court) in this video.

Visited Uitenage years ago, but I must admit I'm struggling with all the new names for various places! The VW museum looks interesting. Didn't get to see it at the time.
As an aside, so many of your old buildings are very similar to those in Australia, in such places as Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne, built in the gold rush era of the mid to late 1800's.
You're not alone, we also don't always know the name of a place has changed until we start planning our route and so it was with Kariega too! The VW museum is definitely worth a visit, I was fortunate to arrive just before closing time to have a peek! 🚙😁 It does sound like there are beautiful colonial buildings in Australia and we can't wait to go and check out those one day too! 😍🏰

That beautiful building was the old law courts/post office. The second church was the original Dutch Reform Church and behind is the later church. The college used to be the old Muir College (High School). Yes, it is the same park! It is a pitty you missed Cannon Hill, the old railway Station, the Drosdy Museum, and Cuyler Manor. The station does not function for passenger trains anymore due to railway lines being stolen. Unfortunately, you have also missed the Concentration Camp. It is indeed the WINTERHOEK Mountains and the Cockscombe Mountains. Valley Bushveld County Lodge also hosts 16 giraffes - the only giraffes in the grater Addo area.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to list the places we 'missed' in your opinion. 🚙😁 You may be new to our channel and may therefore not know that we're not fussed in the slightest about anything we don't get to see or visit in any town or place we travel to. We always travel on an extremely tight time schedule and only have limited time available in each town. We document our journey for fun and are just too grateful for anything we do get to see.

You missed Cuyler Manor, which is probably the most historic site in or near Uitenhage.
You couldn't visit the dam, because you didn't know that you had to contact the municipality.
Also. The VW museum has the last VW Golf to ever come off the production line. This was an absolute spiritual sight for a Golf driver. (My first 3 cars were Golfs.) You missed the museum because of lack of research. (Just Google It)

@Sicko the Ew To your point, my wife is Afrikaans and I'm English, so we totally pronounce the name of this specific town differently. Fortunately ours isn't a language channel, but a travel channel, so we're not too fussed about such things, as we always take great care with place names and don't deliberately mispronounce any. 🤷♂️
