I'm reminded of when budding amp builders call and ask me to check their amp for mistakes because it doesn't play after they build it... LOL! They aren't too happy when I tell them what the minimum price is to place it on the bench....!
Ha... I always thought the Blues Jr. and HR families had a "boxy" sound to the overdrive. I didn't really try to dial anything in... just make it work. I jokingly say I know NOTHING about tone... amps I've fixed that I thought sounded like trash, made the customer OVERJOYED that their amp sounded like it was supposed to. I have a few amps I made that I REALLY like the sound of, and I've had others like them too... Sound is sooo subjective.
@@DeadKoby when sound is really bad ,harsh and fizzy most people agree that it's junk and unusable . even after swapping the speaker and preamp tubes to end game stuff the overdrive channel will remain crappy but a bit less crappy(but the clean channel will improve drastically and it will take od pedals better). you'll have to go into the amp rip out the whole drive circuit and put something nice instead to get anything usable from this amp.
i think that modding an amp by changing the circuit before swapping a speaker and then the v1 tube is stupid, there are priorities when upgrading. i know some people who turned their pcb amps to handwired with no sonic improvement. ive swapped the speaker on a hot rod deluxe 3 to a celestion alnico cream . most people will be happy with only that but since i'm a tube guru i also swapped the v1 tube to a vintage GE,v2 and v3 to vintage brimars .the amp is played live by many players of all sorts for more than 5 years since the upgrade and it sounds amazing with tons of clarity. anderton's and that pedal show were both right about this speaker combined with the hotrod it makes a huge difference and vintage tubes are icing on the cake. the drive/more drive 1.5 channels still suck though but less than before no point hoping to change that it's like they put a really crappy overdrive pedal in the circuit if you want a dirty amp buy a marshall.
The owner took this amp to two other "techs" who thought this was the best route to go with it. Changing the speaker, and tweaking pre-amp tube gain is the easiest starting point, and it's easily reversible. To "reverse" this amp to a original circuit took a good deal of time. I have quite a collection of amps, but different circuits make different sounds.... I like them all for different reasons.
Nice work....Don't know why people would want to mod such a fab amp..? Get a dodgy pedal if you want some weird sounds..! Leave the Fender alone...Great vid man..ED..uk..😀

This was alleged to be the work of professionals. Neatly soldered in some places... I'll give it that.
Good job bringing that poor amp back to life again!
Thanks brother.
Very nice work, the more than more than more OD channel sounds just like its supposed to...crappy

Bit hard to see the cool interesting stuff with the camera refusing to focus
It happens. My hope is to find a deal on a better camera. This isn't a monetized channel, I'm just doing this to be helpful.
@@DeadKoby good video 👍

A few minor tweaks is one thing........ turning a customer's amp into a playground though?? not cool.
