Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton Doesn't Make Any Sense!

  • What do you think about Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton? Even though I adore Pharrell and think that he is a very talented human being, I am still struggling to acknowledge him as the guy heading a brand like Louis Vuitton. Do you think he is doing a good job so far?
    P.S.: It's been a while since I made this video ready but only getting the chance to publish it. I believe everything that is said in the video is still relevant though. If you would like to see a more updated analysis of Louis Vuitton's current collections and trajectory, please let me know in the comments below!

    When starting out Ice Cube studied architecture just in case his rap career didn't go so well. He received an associate degree in architecture. And now is a respected member of the upper echelon of rappers and architectural designers. Since then this has made several urban artists extremely jealous over the years. One of them was Pharrell. Who didn't want to be seen as just a behind-the-scenes guy or a figurehead. He wanted to be Ice Cube but for fashion. And this wasn't really an out-of-the-blue idea. He has been collaborating with fashion designers since 2005.

    I think PW for LV makes perfect sense. He’s a household name. It targets their main consumer base in the US. It’s for celebrities and the middle classes that try to emulate them. The accessories, where the majority of LV profits come from, are very flashy. That being said, I don’t mind the toned back looks of many of the clothes and I enjoy the new camouflage print he’s rolled out. Really I think it’s a perfect fit.

      Exactly. LV hasn't been the old money wasp territory in a long time. Even in the 90s it was the brand of choice of rappers, young new money socialites, and middle class trend chasers. They haven't been making high end travel cases and trunks for only ultra wealthy old money in ages. People need to get over wanting every luxury brand to go with the quiet luxury aesthetic 🙄

      @@PandoraBear357 oh 💡 that is a great point! People equate luxury with "old money" and "quality luxury" and have trouble see the value in the "new money" or loud luxury. It's an internalized elitism as money brands still exist but people are buying (and paying attention to) the flashy loud stuff.

    I am a little perplexed... because you said in the video he had his own brand, collaborated with other brands, and has a nice style- so where is the disconnect? You forgot to mention that he already collaborated with LV in the past. Heck the man even worked with takashi murakami (who has one of the most iconic collections with LV). This is LV's approach at trying to salvage the luxury street style image that they created with Virgil. Pharrell is a safe bet and requires minimal "investment" in the terms of popularity and he has (like you stated in the video already) luxury experience/designer experience. Do I wish it was maybe someone that is up and coming? Yes BUT I do think it is a cohesive fit for the brand. Will I be buying everything that he puts out? probably not because my wallet is small but I already have my eyes on a few upcoming pieces.... which at the end of the day that is LV's bottomline.

      LVMH will aesthetically ruin all the brands it manages, little by little, despite making them commercially successful. It amazes me how brands that are not mainstream, such as Berluti and Moynat, remain practically intact.

    • @bagloverlux
      @bagloverlux 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    At first I wasn't a fan of Pharell but after seeing his collection and thinking about it more it makes sense. No one liked Virgil but he helped make streets acceptable. Looking at his resume, a lot of people don't know his work with Nigo ( CD at Kenzo) with BAPE. Honestly, the cowboy collection was more interesting that anything VV has put out at Chanel and more fresh than Balenciaga has been in years. He brings in a fresh perspective that's not a total change, he's already famous which helps the brand and he has famous friends which helps the brand as well.
    Yes there are plenty of fashion school grads it there but they require a lot of investment that LVMH is clearly not trying to spend. Honestly, those grands can work under a famous name them either be promoted, see Gucci, or start their own. The vehemence against Pharell is nonsensical and feels more like gathering gatekeeping than anything grounded in reality.

    I don’t like that a singer can become a creative director despite of all the people that study at fashion school for years but their name is not famous and they do not know the right people. I didn’t like the show nor the style presented. Maybe it’s just me, I still like Pharrell as a singer but that is it. I am very disappointed by all that is going on. It seems like nowadays there are no more boundaries for anything.

      Totally agree with you, Chiara. Pharrell is such a great singer and that’s it. LVMH hiring him as the CV of their main brand shows me how much this company only cares about making the brands they manage commercially successful, regardless of the way the aesthetics are developed and the centuries-old tradition is guarded.

      Once I watched a video about this Parisian girl who stated that French people don’t usually buy stuff at LV, since the brand keep on cheapening its aesthetics, as they’ve been doing for years. The only people filling the Louis Vuitton stores in Paris, specifically the Champs Elysées flagship, are tourists who want to replicate a Parisian aesthetic that they think exists.

      @@pedrofernandes8596 that is true actually. I live in Italy and I’ve been to Paris several times and I’ve met a lot of Parisians and French people through the years and they definitely do not dress according to the stereotypes that they want us to believe in. Thank God, there are still people that think with their own head. I used to love Luis Vuitton, but I ended up selling on the Vestiaire Collective the accessories and bags I had because I just don’t want to be part of a crowd that I don’t belong to.

    The thing is... being a super famous brand (mostly because of the copies) doesn't make them "the biggest fashion brand in the world". Actually ZARA is way bigger than LV for example. But focusing on luxury, LV is not the biggest at all...
