Damn, so good from both of you. When your student plays, I’m like “Well shit, how is Dave going to top that?” Then you play and show us the teacher you are. Even though I know that’s not what these are videos about, you never fail to impress me man.

I find it interesting because the modulation originally isn't a half step (Its 3 half steps [minor 3rd] apart from D to F). The Real Book kinda botched it but it's still so good regardless and kinda brings a whole new flow into it.

Wow.. I am so inspired right now. I was actually randomly browsing beginner alt sax tutorials because after years of listening to saxophone players (I play guitar myself, decent grasp on intermediate theory) it hit me: I should perhaps just pick up a damn sax and start taking lessons! It just speaks to me so much, and this video tipped me over the edge! The way it resembles a voice, the almost spiritual energy (Coltrane influences heh), just the amount of creativity there is in coloring these notes and runs, ugh.
I am not sure how attainable the level of play that young man is showing here is in my life, but I am sure as hell going to damn try!

The music is incredible, but being able to see the reactions of the master teacher and his star pupil is priceless. They, at this moment in time, are spiritual soul mates, locked in a rare groove, that doesn't happen everyday. What a nice experience for us listeners who can understand a bit of what is going on. Wow, nice job guys. What kind of musical devices are you using when you're ripping through those outside sounding passages (like the section starting around 2:25)?

Yup! Playing with these backing tracks is brutal, but during lessons they're a big help!

Dave, thanks for this (also great playing by the way). I'm an aspiring jazz pianist myself going through Barry Harris's Workshop DVDs currently. After about 6 years of studying jazz I think I'm finally beginning to understand how this stuff is pieced together, and how I can begin to incorporate a lot of what I already know to modal stuff. I'm really excited to start making my own arrangements and soloing over them... but first, I really need to drill into my head the methods of classical (Bach and Mozart styles) and jazz improvisation (stride, blues, bebop). It's a very broad and difficult subject to tackle especially given the amount of technique focus I have to place, but I believe in myself and feel confident that I will get there one day. Thanks so much for the inspiration.
Simon my man, you are COOKING!
