      Thanks Bryan. It is a little long winded but setting up SAS Planet, downloading imagery, how to export a region, and finally get Insight Map Creator to make an AT5 map it was quite a bit to show! I spent ages working it all out, and naming the maps was documented nowhere when this was made.
      Using satellite maps on my B&G is essential!

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We occasionally use OvitalMap for offline use as that keeps the maps on the device, but using any tablet you have limited memory available. An android tablet with external SD card would hold sufficient space, but downloading the maps for large regions would be cumbersome. With SAS Planet able to select a region, map source, resolution(s) and then queue multiple downloads all at once is very convenient. SAS Planet also makes it so easy to switch between various satellite sources instantaneously to find the best image which is all the time when we are planning destinations.

    Awesome video on the guidance and steps to get this done. I have a problem that maybe you might be able to help me.
    I’ve done the download in all versions, version 10 is the only one that actually reads in the sounder and gives me the charts option to select it on the sounder. All other versions don’t appear. Then when you select it just gives you a blank page won’t actually show map at all. Any idea what’s going on. I’m running a HDS CARBON 16. Thanks 🙏

      I'm having the exact same problem. I'm trying all options and it just displays a blank gray page. It seems the fault is with Insight Map Creator, and I'm first thinking it's date related with Garmin makingthis fail,, but backdating pc clock and being disconnected from internet (in case it's checking something) still isn't working for me.

    LOVE this video, where do you place new custom map on SD card ? in a separate folder ? on it's own or elsewhere ? My sounder Elite Ti2 only has one SD card slot, will I need a separate card for new custom map and swap when needed ? Running CMaps

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  ปีที่แล้ว

      I create a folder for each map as the filenames are the same for each zoom level on every map you create.
      I was keeping the folder name to 8 characters or less just in case the MFD is sensitive to long filenames, but it is likely OK to keep them longer and more meaningful.
      I also store them on the separate SD Card, never on the Navionics or C-Map card.

    Fabulous Tutorial, Thank you, though it has been 4 years since you made this video I suspect not much has changed I have been searching for a How to use google earth to over lay a chart/map
    The disappointing side is I just bought 2 x little used C 95 9 inch Raymarine Chart plotters, I could have bought the same in B&G. as the saying goes, if you can Work with what you got.
    However I do have a Panasonic Tough Book C31 1 TB SSD with windows pro 7. Question Can I use Windows pro 7 to carry out the downloads and conversion into a chart as per your tutorial? SV Skoiern IV

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, only change is B&G sometimes require shaded relief on for it to show, but SAS Planet is the same. I wish all chartplotters allowed for AT5 maps, we should be allowed to make our own maps if we chose, and this is why I will not get Raymarine.
      SAS Planet and a GPS puck will run on about any version of Windows, it will just be slower to load lots of waypoints and if your drive is slower to load, BUT IT WILL WORK!

    Hi Chris, Looks like a fantastic tool. At 9.30 into your vid you briefly mention not downloading to C drive because of "permission issues" Is that just with a previous version of SAS Planet? or ??. I am looking at purchasing a 2nd hand laptop for use on my 7m trailer tri. Am Considering a microsoft surface. What would you recommend as a value buy for the task. Would also be running open CPN and general browsing. I am a bit power restricted with just a single 120AHr lithium so would go DC/DC converter instead of an inverter for charging.
    I see from other comments that some people are now having issues with downloading maps. Are things still working OK or??

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not recommend installing to C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) as these are likely to have permission restrictions that could interfere with the SAS Planet program operation. The MS Surface laptops are great as it has inbuilt GPS, is all in one etc, however the screen brightness is the biggest issue with any setup as it is difficult to see in the cockpit in the sunshine. Even under our Targa roof and laptop in the saloon it is difficult for us. I'd suggest a laptop/windows tablet with the brightest display (nits) you can find.
      I have used 12V to laptop chargers previously, it should be more efficient than 12v inverted to 240/120V, then laptop charger to 19V losing energy at each conversion, however we have a decent battery bank and solar setup so we just plug into high voltage now.
      Sometimes Google changes the satellite map version number which causes that to stop downloading. I'm currently using 879 which is still working fine. The following link will assist in how to find this.

    One quick question: what would you say is the main advantage of using SAS Planet/Insight Map Creator like this instead of with OpenCPN?? There are so many other plug-ins with OpenCPN, it would seem to be a more complete nav solution?

      @SailingNoRegrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

However, when I drop a waypoint on the satellite map in my lowrance, the same waypoint shows up in my lowrance base map but it's a few miles away. The satellite map isn't aligned with the base map. • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In SAS Planet how do your Navionics maps and satellite maps compare? Is they waypoint(Placemark) correct in the program? A few miles doesn't sound like it is correct at all. Try a rectangular selection in SAS and select Stitch, Zoom 18 and select the kml georeferencing. I do not change the Projection Option, mine is "Projection of map - Mercator / Googe Maps (Sphere Radius 6378137) /EPSG:3785. That is the georeferencing data that is most likely incorrect.

    Great video Chris, I have been using these maps for a few years on a Lowrance HDS 12 for fishing reef flats and they have been a godsend. I don't know why more fishermen are not doing this. I was wondering - would a tablet work with an internal GPS for offshore work if you were able to cache the images like SAS planet does? I guess you would need a windows based tablet because there is no app for SAS Planet. I'm just not sure if the internal GPS would be strong enough to work like the chartplotters.

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tablet gps is quite accurate so it would be great, but a tablet has limited storage capacity and you couldn't have vast amounts of images downloaded. However if it was on a Samsung tablet with it cached on an sd card then it would fit. If I'm heading out in the tender and need the map I use ovital and download the satellite images on my phone, but an app where I could export the map out from sas planet onto the phone would be awesome.
      And why more people don't do the same I don't understand either, they are so useful and accurate I would not enter many places without it. Then finding places on navionics maps just plain wrong it is essential

Or should i just keep them separate and just name them different?

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The limitation is due to the image size getting too large. If you don't need the detail then a lower zoom will let you select a larger area. Otherwise you are correct making multiple maps. You can also adjust the image using an editor to tweak the brightness and contrast to enhance the image getting areas to show better that may allow you to use lower zooms

    ****UPDATE FROM B&G TECH SUPPORT*****
    In a recent email from B&G support, I was told that all newer units will no longer have AT5 map support, therefore NO MORE CUSTOM MAPPING! Eventually I had some from tech support/development contact me and say that was incorrect, AT5 is still supported, many map suppliers use this format.

    • @SailingNoRegrets
      @SailingNoRegrets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      B&G and Simrad are both Navico products and are almost identical, so it "should" work. B&G recently messaged me and said that AT5 support is being continued (after firstly being told it was being dropped) so hopefully this ability is not lost. I would suggest reading the user manual for Simrad and looking specifically that they mention AT5 map support , but nothing beats seeing it yourself so I would suggest making a map on an SD card into distributor (or anyone you know with the same unit) and putting it in to try.
