Это значит, что ты не только не уважаешь русский язык, но и не знаешь (и тебе не интересно!) традиции, историю, культуру,.. Надо уважать язык (в первую очередь!!) другой страны! ... Я изучала португальский язык 8 месяцев перед поездкой в Португалию. Я долго изучала французский перед поездкой во Францию. Думаю, что каждый человек должен приложить усилия (хоть какие-то) в изучении языка той страны, куда он собрался приехать в своем путешествии. В этом проявляется УВАЖЕНИЕ к другой стране, к ее языку, к людям, историию культуре...
@@ДжейсонБорн-г1л , а с чем Вы не согласны? Я тоже перед посещением какой-либо страны изучаю сотню, самых употребляемых в быту фраз, на языке страны, которую собираюсь посетить. И тем самым проявляю уважение к жителям этой страны и облегчаю себе пребывание в этой стране.
Русским очень нравится, когда иностранцы говорят с ними на русском языке, даже если делают много ошибок. Мы относимся к этому с большим пониманием, стараемся помочь и всячески поощряем желание выучить язык. Наверное, мы испытываем благодарность за то, что иностранец решился выучить наш сложный, но такой многогранный и красивый язык...

Как-то лет 10 назад (смартфоны еще были довольно примитвны) я встретила возле метро растерянного темнокожего мужчину в этнической африканской одежде. Он обращался к людям, но все извинялись и разводили руками. Я подошла, он спросил на французском, говорю ли я на нём. Я ответила, что знаю только английский, но он всё равно протянул мне бумажку, на которой был коряво написан адрес. Писавший явно не знал русских букв и просто перерисовал их как мог. В итоге, минут за 10 разобрались. Я нарисовала ему карту! Цветную! 😂 А благодаря отдельным английским и французским словам, понятным без перевода, а так же ПАНТОМИМЕ, я убедилась, что он понял все обозначения. Если люди захотят, они всегда найдут способ понять другого.
Как-то были под Москвой торфяные пожары сильные летом. И в этом году к нам приезжали ирландцы играть в футбол. Иду я в метро, смотрю парнишка сидит, штудирует карту метро на английском. Я ему помог разобраться, разговорились, спрашиваю - ну как мол тебе Москва. Он такой - классный город, приветливые люди… Потом замялся такой и говорит - только дышать тяжеловато, воздух загазованный. Тут до меня доходит, что он думает - у нас всегда так )) Объяснил ему про это бедствие, ему явно полегчало. Так что теперь стараюсь иностранным ребятам объяснять даже очевидные для нас вещи.

@@pav_romI think it would be similar in the US. Americans are more likely (not definitely, but more likely) to be frustrated by a Mexican living for many years in the US and not knowing English than by, say, a German or Russian not knowing English.
@@scottishguyinmoscow You are past the difficult 1st stage, and provided you speak as much Russian as possible, you will progress faster. I never used any text books after learning the alphabet, but work was 100% spoken Russian.
Speaking Russian is a must if you live or work there. l learned in 6 months in the 90's from zero. I had a work translator for the first 3 months but I ditched him in order to learn faster. in order The Russian company in Primorski Krai I worked for told everyone NOT TO SPEAK TO ME IN ENGLISH . Speaking essential (not perfect but its key to increasing your vocabulary), alphabet essential (street names,metro station names), reading very useful, writing not so important, grammar not really necessary. 30 years later I have not forgotten.
I visited Russia in 2008, 2016, and in 2020. My Russian language skills are at the same level as Scottish Guy but I have found that I could get by OK. The Metro, for example, has more signage in English these days. Many cafes have menus with pictures of the dishes on offer - or simply go to an old style cafeteria where all you have to do is point at the food you want. I was introduced to Liver Cake at a cafeteria in Ekaterinburg by this method. Basic phrases along with humility and respect for Russian culture go a long way.
I agree with everything that you said. I am planning to move to Russia to be with my girlfriend. Yes, I agree, Russian is difficult. But I want to learn before i move. I think it is unwise to arrive in Russia without knowing at least some Russian. But I am biased because I love the Russian language and enjoyed studying it for the last few years. I did understand everything you said and one of the most important things I learned from Russian speakers is their patience and willingness to try understand your speech regardless of grammar mistakes or heavy accent. It depends on your motivation and attitude. In an environment where the air is saturated with the Russian language, one would have ample opportunity to pick up the language with some dedication.
Your pronunciation of Russian speech is good, intelligible. Sometimes foreigners say something in Russian, but because of their nightmarish pronunciation it's impossible to understand what. That's not your case )
Google lens is a godsend for me here in Moscow especially in shops on labels and restaurants. My reading is ok, but for quickness it really helps. Also conversation translate into text in Google translate works if you want to listen to someone talking and need to understand. I made the mistake of not practicing speaking immediately, now it's an uphill battle to learn, but I won't give up!
Just found your channel. I enjoyed your video. I will check out your other content. I've been studying Russian for a couple of years, but it's slow going and inconsistent as working 50 hours a week impedes my learning at a slower pace.
Good summary. About learning russian, use association + flashcard+ podcasts to remember vocabulary quickly and higher frequency drilling to learn Russian grammar easily. Then get partner / flatmate who loves helping you learn. One Italian had good tip, take up hobby or sport (for him rowing) where people are interested in speaking Russian with you.
You can live in Russia without the Russian language. You will cover your basic needs. But you'll miss out on most of the benefits of living here. You will feel lonely, constantly stressed because you do not understand the people around you, and they do not understand you. Communication with society, with people around us, is an important part of the Russian mentality. Be sure to study Russian and you will discover a huge layer of culture that is completely unfamiliar in the West and which you will never cease to admire.
На самом деле разговорный русский язык очень гибкий. Не столь важны падежи, склонения, времена, порядок слов в предложении. Русский человек вероятнее всего поймёт Вас по базовым формам слов и контексту. Так же русские в основном очень лояльны к иностранцам, особенно если они пытаются говорить на русском. Так что, ничего не бойтесь и обращайтесь за помощью.🇷🇺❤️

I mean, you will probably have better luck looking around finding any teen and asking to translate :D i believe most of the young generation knows at least basic english.
You can survive but living a full life will be difficult. Cuz most of us, unfortunately, do not speak English. Even though we learn English at school for god knows how many years 😁 I'm an English teacher and most of my students (all of them are adults) are at the Elementary level when they come to learn. And we do respect foreigners who learn Russian that's true. We know how difficult it is and know how it feels to struggle through language 😅 One more problem is accent. Scottish is unique and a little different from the kind of accent we're used to. So even if you say something simple they might not be able to understand. It happens all the time during classes. Even if they know all the words.. accent matters. BTW Your Russian is pretty good💪🏻keep on going
Great advice about learnng a language BEFORE you go. I have learned two languages - Japanese and French. Japanese is considered a difficult language. But to be honest I got better at that faster, especially when I was in Japan. The reason was that I did a lot of self-study before I went. For French somehow I did not study that at school. So I thought I would learn it in France - meaning pretty much from scratch. What happened was I got into a bubble where I could rely on others to help with things like tax.But I find if you really have done a solid amount of language study before you go to the country your stay there gets off to a much better start, and you get further ahead there in all sorts of ways.

Просто шотландцы внешне не сильно отличаются и поэтому не столь заметны, а вот когда встречаешь возле Зубовского бульвара группу африканцев в военной форме с ушанками - тогда понимаешь, какой у нас тут Вавилон-5 :)
Try to learn the language by speaking to as much peole as possible. This hepls a lot. Lessons help to some extent, but real practise is the key. Also, books, movies (or even cartoons since they contain simple language).
Почему же не выжить? У нас много людей говорят на английском языке. Просто надо обращаться за помощью к молодым людям. Практически вся молодежь знает английский язык. К людям 18- 30 лет. Они осознано смогут что то подсказать.
Мой английский не очень )))). Прочитать и понять могу, а вот разговорный английский на нуле. А мои дети не особо хотят учить английский в школе. Так что говорить, что молодые люди все говорят на английском, так себе идея. В России в некоторых школах изучают немецкий или французский языки
As a person who live in Moscow and who is native in Russian, I can say we have a little bit less English speaking people in fast food, restaurants, underground services, public transport etc. But we still have quite a few random people on the streets who can understand English and sometimes answer the questions, for example, Moscow is big city, I was born in Southern part and I don't know much about Northern or Western parts for example, I mean some location of shops or museums, so one day I was walking with my wife in VDNKH and some Spanish people came to us and asked where the museum of smth (i don't remember) is, I don't know about exact pavilions, so I needed to check Yandex maps and then answered them. It happened a few times to me when I was walking in the center too. P.S. congrats, your Russian is fine, it's very hard language, even for us, we make a lot of mistakes in punctuation, spelling and other things, so don't worry, wish you all the good man!
I have been book learning and on line program learning Russian for 6 years. I estimate my vocabulary is about 8000 words, and I pretty much understand the 6 cases and the grammar. I still have great difficulty understanding Russian videos and am embarrassed that with so much effort I have put in, my competency is still poor. With that said, I understood every word you said in Russian. you spoke clearly and slowly.

Thanks for an interesting video. I learned French like building Lego a long time ago but the words and the grammar are still there 51 years later. I’m now learning Scottish Gaelic which is challenging but rewarding. The main thing that I have learned is be kind to yourself, don’t try to auto translate and learn some key phrases to ask people to slow down. Hello how did you find the courage to make the jump to move? What do you do for living? Do you intend to stay long term? I am looking to network with western foreigners in Moscow as I would eventually like to move there and do business there. I have what many would consider a good situation in the UK but I want to move for a while in Russia and like I said do business because there are so many opportunities with their import substitution programs and so many companies looking to export and aggressively expanding. I grew up in Glasgow (but spent most of my life England and a little while in continental Europe). I hope you respond and we could correspond a little bit.
What are you doing for work over there, teaching English? I would like to visit, but isn't it a bit tricky at the moment? You're not able to use Visa or Mastercard issued outside of Russia, Airbnb have suspended operations in Russia and there are no direct flights. You should do a video about that.
My ex-boyfriend was from the USA. He learned Russian for me. It took him 4 years to do it. When he spoke in Russian, even his voice changed. I liked it when he spoke Russian, but mostly he spoke Russian only to me, his teachers, and a couple of partners with whom he learned the language for practice purposes, since we did not live in Russia. We're talking like buddies right now. I'll send him ur video)

People in Russia are taught English, but the education system here is quiet mediocre to say the least (check the global ratings yourself, you'll see that Russia is somewhere at the bottom of the list, just above poor Asian and African countries). So even in Moscow most people barely understand English. Don't come here unless you're ready to learn Russian or communicate through Google Translate all the time.
Some time ago, our 'State Doomah" passed a law that bans using foreign words in Russian. Like almost every other law they pass, nobody bothered much and nobody changed their linguistic habits, but I was pissed and, as always then I'm pissed, decided to do something about it. I decided to try and only use English for a while, instead of Russian, in dealing with shops etc. So I went to 'Moscow City' and ordered an espresso there, in my RP / MRP and, to my amazement, succeeded. I was understood, I was even asked something like 'single or double' (I asked for a single, they made me a double one, but that's ok.) So, I guess you'll be able to survive not speaking Russian, at least in Moscow and St Pete (not sure about other places.)
Do you understand the difference between "ИЗВИНИ" and "ИЗВИНИТЕ"? This is extremely important! Also, you should know how to distinguish between "ИЗУЧАТЬ" and "УЧИТЬ" 🙂
I live in Antwerp, Belgium, where the language is Dutch. My neighbour on the ground floor is a loud intimidating american older hippie with a music shop. He has been here for 10 years but speaks only american to everyone. He refuses to learn the language even a bit because, why bother? Everyone (except for me) speaks back in his language since people here have no spine and just adapt instead of the other way around. Typical American arrogance to just expect that. He is not respected but everyone is afraid to say 'sorry, i've spoken english enough to you now. Let's proceed in Dutch from here'.
That is wonderful information. I have a question, how many people have a problem with understanding your Scottish accent? I mean, it obviously is easily understandable, but maybe people with a low level English might not catch some words immediatelly?

English natives with a RP accent tend to judge others purely because of the accent. This applies not only to the immigrants but to their compatriots from other parts of the UK . This is incomprehensible to me really - it creates invisible discrimination within society and for those who don't have the "right" accent the social ascent (it's funny how it rhymes:) is so much harder. I realised early on that no matter how well -mannered the English come across, they will look down at you as inferior to them if you do not meet their standards of communication 😢
as Russian, I can say that no-one really needs to learn all of this complicated constructions of russian language. all you need for speaking is knowing the translation of some words. Russians will be able to understand you без падежей и склонений

Not necessarily. In Moscow almost every street sign is written in both Russian and English, and most businesses have at least a small number of English-speaking employees, and that's if, say, a service you need isn't digitized and/or you need to interact with people at all.

Speaking essential (not perfect but its key to increasing your vocabulary), alphabet essential (street names,metro station names), reading very useful, writing not so important, grammar not really necessary. 30 years later I have not forgotten.

I visited Russia in 2008, 2016, and in 2020. My Russian language skills are at the same level as Scottish Guy but I have found that I could get by OK. The Metro, for example, has more signage in English these days. Many cafes have menus with pictures of the dishes on offer - or simply go to an old style cafeteria where all you have to do is point at the food you want. I was introduced to Liver Cake at a cafeteria in Ekaterinburg by this method. Basic phrases along with humility and respect for Russian culture go a long way.

I think it is unwise to arrive in Russia without knowing at least some Russian. But I am biased because I love the Russian language and enjoyed studying it for the last few years. I did understand everything you said and one of the most important things I learned from Russian speakers is their patience and willingness to try understand your speech regardless of grammar mistakes or heavy accent. It depends on your motivation and attitude. In an environment where the air is saturated with the Russian language, one would have ample opportunity to pick up the language with some dedication.

Your pronunciation of Russian speech is good, intelligible. Sometimes foreigners say something in Russian, but because of their nightmarish pronunciation it's impossible to understand what. That's not your case )

Google lens is a godsend for me here in Moscow especially in shops on labels and restaurants. My reading is ok, but for quickness it really helps. Also conversation translate into text in Google translate works if you want to listen to someone talking and need to understand. I made the mistake of not practicing speaking immediately, now it's an uphill battle to learn, but I won't give up!

I've been studying Russian for a couple of years, but it's slow going and inconsistent as working 50 hours a week impedes my learning at a slower pace.
Good summary. About learning russian, use association + flashcard+ podcasts to remember vocabulary quickly and higher frequency drilling to learn Russian grammar easily. Then get partner / flatmate who loves helping you learn. One Italian had good tip, take up hobby or sport (for him rowing) where people are interested in speaking Russian with you.
You can live in Russia without the Russian language. You will cover your basic needs. But you'll miss out on most of the benefits of living here. You will feel lonely, constantly stressed because you do not understand the people around you, and they do not understand you. Communication with society, with people around us, is an important part of the Russian mentality. Be sure to study Russian and you will discover a huge layer of culture that is completely unfamiliar in the West and which you will never cease to admire.

На самом деле разговорный русский язык очень гибкий. Не столь важны падежи, склонения, времена, порядок слов в предложении. Русский человек вероятнее всего поймёт Вас по базовым формам слов и контексту. Так же русские в основном очень лояльны к иностранцам, особенно если они пытаются говорить на русском. You can survive but living a full life will be difficult. Cuz most of us, unfortunately, do not speak English. Even though we learn English at school for god knows how many years 😁 I'm an English teacher and most of my students (all of them are adults) are at the Elementary level when they come to learn. And we do respect foreigners who learn Russian that's true. We know how difficult it is and know how it feels to struggle through language 😅
One more problem is accent. Scottish is unique and a little different from the kind of accent we're used to. So even if you say something simple they might not be able to understand. It happens all the time during classes. Even if they know all the words.. accent matters.

Great advice about learnng a language BEFORE you go. I have learned two languages - Japanese and French. Japanese is considered a difficult language. But to be honest I got better at that faster, especially when I was in Japan. The reason was that I did a lot of self-study before I went. For French somehow I did not study that at school. So I thought I would learn it in France - meaning pretty much from scratch. What happened was I got into a bubble where I could rely on others to help with things like tax.But I find if you really have done a solid amount of language study before you go to the country your stay there gets off to a much better start, and you get further ahead there in all sorts of ways.

Ну что вы, в Москве кого только нет, а у шотландцев и ирландцев тут даже свои пабы есть еще с 1990-х годов. Просто шотландцы внешне не сильно отличаются и поэтому не столь заметны, а вот когда встречаешь возле Зубовского бульвара группу африканцев в военной форме с ушанками - тогда понимаешь, какой у нас тут Вавилон-5 :)

Try to learn the language by speaking to as much peole as possible. This hepls a lot. Lessons help to some extent, but real practise is the key. Also, books, movies (or even cartoons since they contain simple language).

As a person who live in Moscow and who is native in Russian, I can say we have a little bit less English speaking people in fast food, restaurants, underground services, public transport etc. But we still have quite a few random people on the streets who can understand English and sometimes answer the questions, for example, Moscow is big city, I was born in Southern part and I don't know much about Northern or Western parts for example, I mean some location of shops or museums, so one day I was walking with my wife in VDNKH and some Spanish people came to us and asked where the museum of smth (i don't remember) is, I don't know about exact pavilions, so I needed to check Yandex maps and then answered them. It happened a few times to me when I was walking in the center too.
P.S. congrats, your Russian is fine, it's very hard language, even for us, we make a lot of mistakes in punctuation, spelling and other things, so don't worry, wish you all the good man!

"Студент" is usually used to refer to college or university student. "Ученик" would be more appropriate.

I have been book learning and on line program learning Russian for 6 years. I estimate my vocabulary is about 8000 words, and I pretty much understand the 6 cases and the grammar. I still have great difficulty understanding Russian videos and am embarrassed that with so much effort I have put in, my competency is still poor. With that said, I understood every word you said in Russian. you spoke clearly and slowly.

I learned French like building Lego a long time ago but the words and the grammar are still there 51 years later.
I’m now learning Scottish Gaelic which is challenging but rewarding.
The main thing that I have learned is be kind to yourself, don’t try to auto translate and learn some key phrases to ask people to slow down.

Hello how did you find the courage to make the jump to move? What do you do for living? Do you intend to stay long term? I am looking to network with western foreigners in Moscow as I would eventually like to move there and do business there. I have what many would consider a good situation in the UK but I want to move for a while in Russia and like I said do business because there are so many opportunities with their import substitution programs and so many companies looking to export and aggressively expanding. I grew up in Glasgow (but spent most of my life England and a little while in continental Europe). I hope you respond and we could correspond a little bit.

My ex-boyfriend was from the USA. He learned Russian for me. It took him 4 years to do it. When he spoke in Russian, even his voice changed. I liked it when he spoke Russian, but mostly he spoke Russian only to me, his teachers, and a couple of partners with whom he learned the language for practice purposes, since we did not live in Russia. We're talking like buddies right now. I'll send him ur video)

People in Russia are taught English, but the education system here is quiet mediocre to say the least (check the global ratings yourself, you'll see that Russia is somewhere at the bottom of the list, just above poor Asian and African countries). So even in Moscow most people barely understand English. Don't come here unless you're ready to learn Russian or communicate through Google Translate all the time.
Some time ago, our 'State Doomah" passed a law that bans using foreign words in Russian. Like almost every other law they pass, nobody bothered much and nobody changed their linguistic habits, but I was pissed and, as always then I'm pissed, decided to do something about it. I decided to try and only use English for a while, instead of Russian, in dealing with shops etc. So I went to 'Moscow City' and ordered an espresso there, in my RP / MRP and, to my amazement, succeeded. I was understood, I was even asked something like 'single or double' (I asked for a single, they made me a double one, but that's ok.)
So, I guess you'll be able to survive not speaking Russian, at least in Moscow and St Pete (not sure about other places.)

I live in Antwerp, Belgium, where the language is Dutch. My neighbour on the ground floor is a loud intimidating american older hippie with a music shop. He has been here for 10 years but speaks only american to everyone. He refuses to learn the language even a bit because, why bother? Everyone (except for me) speaks back in his language since people here have no spine and just adapt instead of the other way around. Typical American arrogance to just expect that. He is not respected but everyone is afraid to say 'sorry, i've spoken english enough to you now. Let's proceed in Dutch from here'.

tip: you can speak in english, russians will automatically answer in russian, but they will try to understand what do you want, and will try to help.

English natives with a RP accent tend to judge others purely because of the accent. This applies not only to the immigrants but to their compatriots from other parts of the UK . This is incomprehensible to me really - it creates invisible discrimination within society and for those who don't have the "right" accent the social ascent (it's funny how it rhymes:) is so much harder. I realised early on that no matter how well -mannered the English come across, they will look down at you as inferior to them if you do not meet their standards of communication 😢

as Russian, I can say that no-one really needs to learn all of this complicated constructions of russian language. all you need for speaking is knowing the translation of some words. Russians will be able to understand you без падежей и склонений

Not necessarily. In Moscow almost every street sign is written in both Russian and English, and most businesses have at least a small number of English-speaking employees, and that's if, say, a service you need isn't digitized and/or you need to interact with people at all.
