    This is exactly the tips and information I needed to get started - I was apprehensive about using adhesive to stick a GoPro mount to my helmet, I'm delighted this solution exists, and thanks for talking through the process! I was thinking of doing a similar microphone setup for the time being, so good to know that it works! Thanks again!

    Ordered the chin mount. Works like a charm on my modular Shoei helmet. Tried using a chest mount with a gimbal but angle was too low. So chin mount, it is!

    • @MeghanStark
      @MeghanStark  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the chin mount works great! Sometimes my bike is cut out of the view, but that's because I film in wide instead of superview. It's all a matter of preference though.

    I've been reluctant to record audio from my rides because I'm mostly off road in the dirt and didn't want to expose my gopro to the elements to get the adaptor plugged in.
    Great tip adding the lapel mic to the helmet and running it to your phone. I'll try it next time I'm out.

    Awesome video Lady! Months ago I checked out your gear section and ordered the chin mount that you have. It works better than, like you said, more permanent mounts and it easily goes from helmet to helmet. Great Find!! I looked around a LOT and never saw that. I mount mine with the "Y" facing up and it allows me to open/close my chin vent on my Icon Airmada helmets. I cut the "Pointy thing" off on the stalk end. For Audio, I am playing with the Tascam DR-05 but never considered using my phone....DUHHH!! LOL! My phone is a LOT smaller! I'm using the Hero 7 Black and Silver cameras that require the Brick of a Mic adapter. I'll try it but, the phone or Tascam is probably better. I have a LONG way to go on my learning curve. Thank you for you fabulous videos Lady!! Great stuff coming from Wisconsin!!! Cheers!

    Thanks for the Tips. I use the same setup but instead of a Phone, I use an affordable Digital Audio Recorder (no! Not Zoom, Zoom brand is never affordable) but what I use can also record a Raw Wav file that can capture "1536-kbs audio pro standard" already, but my mic is a stereo Lavaliere (Lapel Mic), works perfect as well, very clear audio since the mic is inside the Helmet..

    I would advise against buying a bell qualifier for sportbike riders. I have the DLX version and I've noticed that if I try to go full tuck the helmet impairs my vision. You also need to be more picky with any luggage you take in case your backpack pushes against the back of the helmet causing it to tip down and block your vision.

    Fantastic video and definitely a game changer for motovlogging. I’m not overly fond of the external microphone hooked to my GoPro. Hooking to an external recording device seems like a great idea and gives more flexibility. Definitely cheaper than a Sena. I’ll definitely check out the chin strap too. Looks much better and comfortable than the sticky mounts. Thanks so much for sharing. I got a lot out of this video. :)

    • @MeghanStark

      I forgot to mention that an added perk is that you can still use some of the audio that the GoPro collects outside of the helmet, which is great for the atmosphere or other people talking around you. Sometimes I switch between audio sources or layer them together. Thanks for watching!

    That's a pretty neat set up with that mount on the helmet! Personally a mount glued directly do the helmet does'nt disturb me and that why I can shut the visor completely which I almost always do.
    I use about the same solution for audio too but simply cut the earbuds off and use a bluetooth version for music/noise reduction so I can have my phone free of cables while mounted on the bike. Nice Video!

    I'd like to offer you a tip on photography (video).
    You're pretty face not in focus here. (bummer), but your helmet is in focus. So (obviously), both need to be in focus.
    You need to either: a) use a smaller aperture (f/16 or more) which might do the trick (but not likely because your focus distance is too close)
    OR
    b) get a longer lens (i.e. use a 85mm or 100mm or greater to get the crop you want) and also use as much light as possible so you can stop down to f/16-ish to get as large a depth of field as necessary to get everything (you and the helmet in this scenario) in focus.
    :-)
    Matt Granger, and, Tony & Chelsea Northrup and a bunch of other pro photographers have free tut's on YT to show you how.
    Also, using a _Depth of Field Calculator_ (a free or cheap app on Androids and iPhones - and several websites - just google it) can tell you exactly how much depth of field you will get at a given distance and f/stop. This is "Physics of Light and Lenses 101" for photographers/videographers :-D
    BAM! Now ya know! :-O
    It's just kind of a bummer not seeing your pretty face in sharp focus...but then, I'm a bit of a detail perfectionist. ;-)
    Here's my Kit (I shoot mostly architecture and landscapes) bit.ly/2UYPYVr
    Stay warm n safe gurl. :-)

    • @MeghanStark
      @MeghanStark  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I do have a longer lens but I have quite limited space in my apartment. I should've used a deeper DOF, a calculator sounds handy, I'll check that out. The main reason my stuff is out of focus is because I'm filming myself and cannot make adjustments like I'd be able to from behind the camera, my vision is actually not very good up close (so I have a hard time seeing detail on the viewfinder), and my camera doesn't autofocus in video. Lots of lame excuses, but it be that way sometimes. haha. Most of the woes come from being a one-woman show. I do watch tons and tons of photography tutorials and have shot for quite some time. So I do have access to the info. Sometimes it's nice to have one thing I'm not a perfectionist about. Thanks for watching!

    • @DarrenD777
      @DarrenD777 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MeghanStark Sorry, yeah, a minute after i wrote that I saw your "Kit" online and you do have some longer focal length lenses.
      Hmm...yeah, I have to wear glasses for reading...Hey, try using an external monitor (as big as possible) for your t3i - I believe you can use an HDMI cable (you'll need one with the smaller end for the camera), then you can make sure it's focused on your eyes rather than a mic or helmet or tripod... heh heh. I bought a couple cheap adapters for regular HDMI cables so I can use any cable to plug into my t3i. I think they are like $2 via eBay.
      There are small 7-10" monitors that can mount to the flash shoe too, but you could probably use an old iPad, Android tablet, or Windoze tablet (note: you might need an app to make it act like a monitor). Even a laptop might work.
      --> I've never done more than a minute of vid with my cam, but I know that the free authentic Canon app (via USB cable) will control it for still shooting - it might control it for vid shooting too and then you get a nice (laptop/computer) size screen with all the controls for doing vid/stills.
      Here's my Kit: bit.ly/2UYPYVr
      Cheers from sunny California :-)

    Meghan, thanks for the informative video. Sound continues to be an issue. On a long ride, how on earth do you sync up audio to 50 or 100 ten second snips of video? I shoot with a Hero 9, but I am leaning toward voice over after I get home and go to post production in iMovie. Thanks for posting this....

    • @MeghanStark
      @MeghanStark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Voiceover might be best for your case if you're on a very long ride. I tend to keep my mic and video going the whole time in order to keep it synched, or I try to do some sort of a new sync up that's not precise but it gets the job done. I'll say action and do something with my hands (like close my fist palm facing the camera) as a visual queue. So audio runs the whole time, and video gets added back in as needed, and you cut out the dead audio. But As the Magpie flies most often does voiceovers on her long trips and her results are great.
      I think I'll do a follow-up video on this topic!

    Question - with the chin mount for a gopro, how do you stop the camera picking up your voice, as it always seems to with me? Then, when I come to sync recorded audio, I'll have my voice playing over a lower volume version of my voice in a weird harmony. Or worse, if I sync it up slightly out, it'll create an echo effect...

      I usually completely mute that track! I find that the mic picks up enough bike sound for atmosphere, so I don't use any of the audio from the GoPro itself unless I need to pick up some other miscellaneous outside noise (like someone talking to me)

    Thanks for the information but you haven’t told How phone records the audio, do we need download apps for GoPro or connect with wifi or Bluetooth

    • @MeghanStark
      @MeghanStark  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did mention this in the video, but I record to a simple audio memo (this type of app comes standard with most phones) and then I sync it up in my video editing software during post-production. Luckily there's no special app, any app that creates an exportable audio file will work! The GoPro records its own separate audio while I ride, and sometimes I layer that in with the audio I captured in the helmet. There are probably tutorials on TH-cam about this but I think I'll make a follow up to this video with some additional specific details. Thanks for letting me know these questions, I'll definitely explain more in a future video!

    I have a question about the headphones. Is it still hear any voice with the position of headphones? Or does it need to turn up the volume to max?

    • @MeghanStark
      @MeghanStark  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will clearly pick up your voice and a little bit of surrounding noise/voices at the regular volume. When there are other people around or other external sounds I want to amplify, sometimes I'll then use the audio that the GoPro is picking up. With this method, you get two audio sources to choose from! You can switch between or mix them together
