    More people should grow boswellia, I currently have 17 of them and some from socotra island.

    I don't think I'd be able to cut it up either. I have a hard time pruning my current trees, I can't imagine myself slicing this gem up even if it's for the resin. Enjoy your baby. Thank you for mentioning where you purchased this tree, I just placed an order for some seeds!!!

    I have some 8 -week old seedlings that I'm pampering in partial shade. Would you suggest keeping them in pots for a year or two before putting them in the ground? Either way, I'm planning to provide some winter protection (9b). These are B. sacra from Dhofar Oman. They're looking healthy but not very vigorous at this stage. Fingers crossed.Thanks!

      I don't have much experience with seedlings. I just started a few this year in containers that sprouted in the mulch under my tree last year. My big trees in the ground are from cuttings. So far my seedlings are very slow growing and I believe that is fairly typical from what I've seen and read. To be on the safe side, I'd continue to container-grow them until they have a good root system before planting in the ground.

    Nice tree. I want to grow one on my property too. Does it have a slow growth? Or medium growth gate?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it's a medium grower. The tree in the video has never been pruned and represents 5 years of growth from starting a small rooted cutting.

    Beautiful tree 💚
    Have any insects bothered the tree?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I've never seen any damage from pests. When it blooms, it attracts bees so it's a wonderful attractant for pollinators.

    Beautiful tree !
    Congrats on your success with growing it.
    Would you be so kind as to provide information on your soil composition, feeding regiment with food (N, P, and K), and how often you water?
    Did you cover it at night during Winter and provide a heat lamp?
    I have a ton of questions......lol.
    I am in Florida (Gulf Coast) and would like to grow this species.
    Other than our humidity, we have plenty of sun like Arizona with our Winters getting pretty cold (below 40) for a 2 or 3 weeks for these plants.
    I did read that they reach maturity around 8 - 10 years old, and start producing sap for harvesting at that time.
    Thanks for your time and help !

      The small rooted cutting was planted 1/2 native AZ soil and 1/2 cactus soil. For the first 6 months it got a cactus food (1-1-1). For the next 3 years I fed it Alaska fish emulsion every 2 weeks (5-1-1) . Now I feed it organic compost three times a year. It is watered weekly during the growing season; basin flooded. Seldom watered it during the cold. This book is a great resource on growing and cultivating these plants --www.ebay.com/itm/Cultivation-of-Bursera-Frankincense-of-the-Americas-New-Bursera-Book-/261342827320

      Thanks for the info !
      I will be using Jobe's Organics All Purpose (4-4-4) diluted to 1/4 strength.
      It's at Lowe's like the Alaskan fish you listed. Both good OMRI products.
      Did you happen to take your PPM readings when you fed them?
      I acquired 2 Boswellia Sacra seedlings since I last wrote. Already have them in their pots with the 50% Perlite and 50% Organic Cactus Mix soil.
      Also have a Dracaena Cinnabari seedling enroute for delivery withing the next 2 days.
      I would like to find some Opopanax (Sweet Myrrh) seedlings.

    Did you need to add limestone to the soil? If not, are you satisfied with the health of the tree? Did you tap any harvest from it?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't add anything to the soil or even feed the plant much anymore. I am blown away by the health of the tree. I have not tapped the trunk. I read you don't do that until the tree is 8 years old and mine is less than 6. It bleeds out sap on its own during the monsoons here which I collect. I can see why they call it the sweat of the gods. Incredible fragrance and does have healing properties.

    Why do you need to protect in in summer? Isn't it as hot in Oman and Yemen?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's hot here but not as humid as in their native climate. In my experience, my new frankincense was getting some leaf scorch it's first summer; not lethal but enough to thwart growth. My plant was in full all day sun. Just sharing my experience on what to do for optimal growth...survival demands much less

      @EnlightenmentGarden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm located 30 miles west of downtown Phoenix and in USDA zone 9B. You could possibly grow in the ground in your area as long as you provide a cold frame and supplemental heat in the winter. Container growing would be the easiest where you can bring the container inside when it gets under 40.

    From your experience/ professional opinion, is it okay to put used coffee grounds into the Boswellia plants soil mixture? (Container or ground)

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never used coffee grounds on frankincense but given they adapt to a wide range of ph in soils don't believe it should hurt them; however, frankincense can show shock with any environmental changes like ph and drop leaves so you may want to do a little at a time to see how the plant responds.

    • @jasonmaitoza6713

      @@EnlightenmentGarden I've had nothing but success and greener foliage with every other plant that I've used it for, but I wanted to ask someone with experience before I experimented with one of my tiny sacra trees or even a rare Socotrana. Heavy winds today and excessive rain/cold just knocked 1 of them out of the containers. I also noticed what looked like root rot from it being uprooted, so I repotted it. Oddly enough they not only have all their leaves, but the leaves are a healthy dark green still without me adding the used coffee grounds. I'm thinking the coffee grounds might also anchor them in the soil a bit more securely too. Thank you for your feedback. 😊

      @EnlightenmentGarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are multiple varieties of boswellia with only a few that produce the resin frankincense. Sacra is the most pure form which is what I grow. Read Jason Eslamieh's book on boswellia for more information.
