Oh shit!! I’m still somewhat new to the hardware world and your channel is my go-to for learning what’s up :) Thanks so much for the kind words man, made my day 🙌
You also have high pass and low pass filters for each pad/instrument instead of EQ, plus pitch change option, envelope ADSR for changing the length of samples, and you can route each pad/instrument out 8 individual mono outputs for post processing, or any combination of stereo and mono outputs. Then we can talk about poly-rhythms with different step lengths and divisions for non-repetative grooves. And then the best part of all, pristine audio quality, fantastic ADC and DAC. Sequencing and song construction too. more... The BlackBox is the greatest's musician sampler ever made, all the necessities and none of the complexities, all in a one-day learning curve. All other samplers are very complex and designed for the non-musician to tweak everything and humanize the music...same thing a musician can do by just playing in samples.
You can do something even cooler with the Stomp and the Blackbox. You can use MIDI pad record. There are a few settings to change on the BB. Once done, you just have to set up the pads to the length of bars you want (or set to global if all the same) and then you program buttons on the Stomp to send certain MIDI notes. I've done it on a Stomp XL, where I have buttons for: go to next pad, record pad, play pad, or clear pad. The other button I cycle through snapshots to change my tone. By clearing pads as you go, you can somewhat endlessly loop hands free. The nice part is that when you clear a pad, the recording is still on the SD card, so you can use it as a way to audition a bunch of ideas and later mine what you want off the card. I've also used it and its song mode to record guitar parts to go with parts on my Roland Verselab or MC707. Great little sampling buddy!
Nice, thanks for sharing. The Blackbox is great fun. Just for info you can resample a bunch of pads down to a blank pad to free up space if you want more 👍
It's really a shame that there aren't more products like the black box. All the groove boxes out there don't cater to live instrument looping. I just want to record some small ideas without having to go to Ableton or buy a whole MPC rig. 1010 owes you a commission because you just convinced me to buy this.
Agree!! I’m all about devices that can sequence samples AND live loop and there’s so few of them. Blackbox is doing some heavy lifting for us beat makers who want to live loop :)
Hi you can actually “stack”/add sounds until you run out of voices Using “resample “ you can stack several pads on to one pad For example all your percussion/ drums onto 1 pad so you can save space/pads
Very cool, I’ve been experimenting with the novation circuit rhythm, it also has a mixer and fx, but it is a bit limiting in the looping departement. It is great for grooves and song structures. Thanks for sharing.
That’s awesome! The circuit rhythm is on my list for sure :) it would probably pair great with a looper that can be MIDI synced like the RC-5 or blackbox!
Hey just loved it! Have you heard about Smpltrek? It handles almost all of the features you showed. I think it's a great alternative to this purpose too.
Yeah… I do a similar approach with several samplers too. Often i create what I call ‘a chord track’… which is individual chord samples in a certain key which I then arrange into a sequence. Once I have the chord track… all other parts get recorded. Usually by the end of the song I ditch the chord track… but sometimes it makes it into the final song too.
@@tjguardino ... yeah...another fun one is to grab a chord prog from a favorite song, drop the key, chop it and rearrange the chords.. and then do the same thing (build a sequence, record against it and dump the sample track). If I don't do these things I definitely end up with the same progressions in the same tempos, in the same keys, lol.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Seems like it's effectively a standalone version of Ableton Live, or a cheaper Push 3? Shame there is no auto loop length function but as you've illustrated there's a lot of other positives. Would be a beast paired with a midi keyboard w/pads and a footswitch to trigger recording (assuming there are on-board instruments for keys etc, which I believe there is). I've been seeking out something like this for a while, with the Ableton Push 3 being the only one that ticks all the boxes, but I'm not spending that much just yet. Will stick with the MC101 & RC500 for now.
Thank you! Yes, definitely reminds me of the push workflow but a little paired down. And it has a MIDI jack in the back that can host controllers so it would be super easy to use a controller with it! The other thing that’s cool about it is that it does multisampling (which I haven’t experimented with yet but people love it)
I have both the Blackbox and a Push 3. You really can’t compare them in any way because Live/Push is a full professional-level DAW while the Blackbox is just a sample-based audio toolbox. It probably has less than 0.1% of Live’s functionality. That doesn’t take away anything from how awesome the blackbox is. Looping with a midi controller attached is super quick and the multisampler functionality is very rare for a compact hardware box
Listening to a lot of your jams and digging the approach to looping. I'm looking into BB and line 6 stomp. Does the bass simulated tone come factory on the Line 6 or is it a downloaded IR.
Mc707 is a mixer, drum machine, and has a looper. Looper, unfortunately, is limited to 60 seconds of audio. The workaround is to bounce it down to a drum track via export. Not ideal, but could work. Deffinently an over looked machine. Also, there that korg replay, not sure why it's so expensive!
Im having issues when I load a sample there is no sound unless I change from sample or clip to granular. Then the sound is chopped. I’m also running dual tonex one pedals into the mix in and the sound quality isn’t the best, seems I have to crank the gain up. Any help would be appreciated
What the hell! There's an EQ in this thing?! haha. I had no idea. Great video T.J. Thanks for making it
