Agreed! I remember being so excited when I first got my Maschine MK3, years ago, and was disappointed when I couldn't manage to make the realistic drum sounds I was hearing in my head. Obviously part of that is because I had no finger-drumming experience/skills, but I do think that the pad layout outlined in this video will make it much easier to achieve than the "normal" layout.
Great video, I really want to get into finger drumming it just seems more natural for me like when I was growing up beating on the desk making beats! Great video. Subscribed!
I get the same layout you’re using while also having default mpc or mach kits work without remapping. I rotate the pad controller anti-clockwise 90deg. Simple. Your prob know.. if your away from the daw you can get round robins and velocity layers out of some dawless boxes.
Yes good call!! Someone reminded me you can multi sample with velocity layers on the Blackbox so you could potentially get a drum VST in a box that way 👀
Awesome demo! Layout recommendation: mirror layout on 2 Xjams. Check out Nular's post in the "Share your pad layout!" thread on r/FingerDrumming, and also the XpressPads "Finger Drumming Demo Reel" video and his other videos with double pad / launchpad setups. I'm currently rocking 2 Xjams oriented vertically and positioned above an Xkey 37, with the left pad on each Xjam aligned with the F keys for maximal melodic phrasing options on each hand (working on leveling up to do stuff like in GLASYS's "Finger Twisters" video.)
Your videos are great, I always learn something new. I totally copied your looping setup from a while back, think I'm going to do the same here. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. I have ESI Xjam and Maschine mikro mk3 and the last one I prefer much better - bigger pads are better for my big fingers and Maschine mikro pads have much better sensitivity for low-level drumming.
Nice!! I actually have both as well :) The Maschine Mikro mk3 is awesome my only complaint is that it isn’t class compliant so you can’t use it with the Blackbox
That’s a pretty cool system! I’ve never really done any finger drumming but from what I’ve seen this makes a lot more sense to me than the “default”. I’m about to set up my percussion pad (samplepad pro) for more humanized drums, but I might give this a try as well. Re: daw vs samplers, the Blackbox actually does multisampling with velocity layers which means you can get the same results with hardware only!
The Akai MPD218 is even cheaper then the Xjam and is very good. You have the classic MPC feel, lay-out and look and the pads are really nice. A Quest For Groove also recommended this one. Anyway, I enjoyed this video very much. Thank you for that.
I have found 2x8 layout (novtion launcchkey mini) best for me.. I've also got 4x4 on my Arturia Keylab but i realised the Novation is so much better and the 2x8 is so much more convenient.. (i did also try QFG layout on the 4x4 but it didn't work out for me)
@@tjguardino I mainly want as close the actual feeling. I might just try to find a Ludwig Black Beauty (what I had as a kid) and some way to trigger midi on that.
I am trying to split up a song into its component parts ie: intro, chorus, verse, outro. Then assign the parts to a pad, so I can seamlessly repeat the chorus or verse, but I have no idea how to split up an mp3 song into its components and make them loop seamlessly. You said that you worked for a DAW company I would assume that a DAW would probably help in this quest? Once the song parts are created maybe they could be triggered by say a cymbal hit. Thanks for posting.
@@tjguardino Thanks for the suggestion. I looked into the 1010 music Blackbox. It is a great tool but it's one weakness is its ability to split up waves into loops as it has a very small touch screen. I guess I will have to learn how to build seamless loops in a DAW, as steep and as painfull as that will be. Although 1010 did have a feature that can detect music transitions which would be very useful. Thanks for posting.
I thought the blackbox supported multi sample instruments, I think there is even a free software that can convert multi samples from many different formats to blackbox
@@EdoardoMarcora yes it does!! I hadn’t thought about that, but you can totally multisample a drum plugin at different velocity layers to get a much more realistic feeling kit
@ ahh gotcha! You can’t load samples directly into AD2 so you’ll need another program to run alongside it. Sitala is a great lightweight sampler and I believe there’s a free version too!
@ what about little midi phrases from the already made grooves. Is it possible to trigger parts of those phrases on one pad for example. If I like a drum fill it could be placed on pad one. And the rest is keep as “one shots”
you have nailed the finger drumming well done
Thank you!! Thanks for watching :)
this may be the best video ive seen!

Really inspiring! I'll pull out my Maschine MK3 and try this layout 🙂

Nice tips. I was wondering how hard it would be to just put a midi snare on an arm kind of like a mic you could move in and out.
For sure… maybe something like a Roland SPD one or something to trigger a snare
