Bad Gear - This BOX is not BLACK
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. There is no lack of compact, costly and multitalented touchscreen devices in our lives and usually we want to get away from them - especially when making music.
Today we are going to talk about 1010music blackbox. This 2019 “thing” not only threw down the gauntlet to its competitors in the crowded field of sampler / sequencer combos with an acute fit of feature-based megalomania, it also wants to take on the big Berlin Excel of DAWs.
Thanks to ASIFEH for saving the Bad Gear supply chain once again:

I wouldn’t touch that thing with your money.
😂 it’s such a piece of shit.
A devoted follower of your Bad Gear.
Man I love bald gear
😂😂😂
@@AudioPilz Shorts were filed.
I got 3 basically kickass IEMs for $5 (in total) but have yet to try Oxygen. Such is life. my testicles are bald btw (I know, everyone needed that image right now, little crumpled up raisin looking things with the wring shade of beige), and that's even without shaving. Am I joining the club? Probably not.
I'm a bit disappointed that the suitcase that was delivered to me wasn't filled with coke and diamonds though.
And I got a $5 midi keyboard/touchpad/gamepad thing that is surprisingly effective. Almost as good as a (micro) Korg. The only problem is, I now have like 3 mice too, aside from the 3 (with 3 meaning 4) keyboards, so I need some kind of way to use them at the same time without them conflicting. I wonder how I can do that.
*I'll mention some software for using multiple keyboards/mice (though it ain't exactly free if you're not Johnny Depp), and such. And some open source software for using multiple keyboards for macros/triggers and such. But not right now. Because I have paramnesia, which btw is a highly recommended feature for classic reproductions of worse versions of not quite analog synths.

What's still missing is a full album of bad gear jams. 👍
Shameless plug: hundreds of full tracks can be found on Patreon❤️❤️❤️
@@AudioPilz Does that include the Fast and the Fourier album series?
@@AudioPilza curation of an album for the channel would be dope
Meaning, we have to create the track listings ourselves, AP? ;)
Yessss I forgot what day it was.
Have a nice weekend!!!
Friday my friend.
ME TOO. The other day I was like "Wtf, it's already friday?". But it's sunday, so I was actually ahead of the times.
He's gonna do the Octatrack soon. I can feel it.
Maybe save that one for a special occasion;)
I owned one and it's very fetish-worthy. It's a really powerful setup. After a while trying to touch screen arrange midi notes and even worse edit them with the knobs wears you down.
I loved the endless sample lengths, I hated trying to use the knobs to control sample editing. I hated fighting to remember how to assign lfos to things.. the fx was great but considering they have a sister box that does fx in the modular world, it feels like a cheat that it only has basic fx. My last gripe was it felt like an endless wait for that, "final update" that made it a real tool.
I sold it reluctantly because I truly loved it despite all its flaws. Love/hate vibes all the way.
I get you. I love it but I use it pretty simply. But entering/editing midi notes using the touchscreen is one of life's most pointless and unenjoyable things ever 😂
@@Eightball69 like building a house of toothpicks.
That sums it up nicely!
Bad gear vs stimming, cannot wait
That would be fun!

If you did get an iPad, I’d look forward to your new series: Bad App.
Great idea, thanks!!!

At first glance, this boxes all the ticks^^
❤️❤️❤️
at first box, this ticks all the glances^^
I have a few samplers, but the Blackbox is more intuitive, and easier to get going on than the others.
It also is more like a Swiss army knife, being able to do lots of different things, like multi track recorder/player, effects for external input, sequencer, and control voltage record/playback.
And it has a small form factor that I really like, and the build quality is excellent, with just the right amount of encoders, and buttons + touch screen, that work together very well.
I even installed a battery inside mine, to make it even more portable, and convenient to use.
Thanks for the show, and have a great day 😻
I totally agree with you, I keep coming back. I just wish it cut samples like the 404mk2 does.
and youll never fill up that 256 gig sd card
Thank you for watching!!!
Been using blackbox for years. Love it.
Nice!!!
"Been using blackbox for years. Love it."
I lov mine too
Yeah same here, one of the things I quite like is the free firmware updates keep making it better and better.
If you hate computers this is all you need. It has been the centre of my production for years.
Nice!!!
Same here. I probably use like between half and 3/4ths of it but it was exactly what I was looking for.
It is just a simpler computer in a box.
@@treetopjones737 And yet it's better than most of the simple computers in a box. If that is how you are defining gear, you might as well dismiss most of everything.
No automation though?! It’s not for me
Love that we're memeing the Astrolab already
Of course we do;)

The Black Box looked aweful but 6:34 you got it sounding good. The Cyborg Strandbeest Hamster was also amazing :)
Thank you!!!
I love the 1010blackbox. It is especially great for traveling and has a nice sound. I thought that hitting tiny screen pads would be an issue, but it is surprisingly comfortable. That said, I only found it practical for traveling, and think it is the best production device to bring on a plane.

Spat my beer at the Bob Astrolab meme. D&B track was kilker, go to the top of the class. 🍻
Thank you so much!!!
Altogether awesome episode. Black box is the best for dawless dub stems. Love it Joy. So much gear, so little time, so glad you featured this.
Thank you so much!!!
Whereas i love my Bitbox2, a real gamechanger in a modular synth, it seems screen saving is a luxury functionality.
I really have to give that one a try!
The frogger color scheme 😂the creativity of these videos show what's in your brain and this is reflected in your awesome versatile music style!
Thank you so much!!!
if this thing could record launched/toggled on and off clips properly into the sequencer, it would be damn near perfet. sounds incredible, the comp/delay/reverb/filter/master eq are all wayyy better than they should be. like very very excellent quality
Yeah, so close in so many ways!
I wasn’t ready for the smirking during the patreon names. This has made me want to subscribe more than ever.

The finale of “the fast and the Fourier” with a nod to nyquist reminds me of “get the fuck off my FFT” on squarepushers “do you know squarepusher”. Solid!
😀😀😀
New unit of measurement: The Bad gear. One bad gear is 10 meme by minute.
Should be taught at Colleges!!!
where the memes flash by so fast you can't even click pause fast enough to read them
Having wasted your youth playing FPS games definitely helps;)
I can't keep up with the memes per minute!

Thank you so much!!!
This is hands down the best gear channel on youtube and it's not even close.
Thank you so much!!!
For some strange reason (a song's name btw), I feel like making a song with a Samsung washing machine, a Defy dishwasher, an LG microwave an I dunno what sort of geyser and a water tap, along with perhaps an ashtray and beer bottle. The Samsung washing machine plays a few nice little melodies and has a nice sort of tumbling percussion effect, almost like a phaser or flanger added to a time-stretched bass sample.
This utilitarian device was very tempting but I finally decided it’s a little too bare bones for my taste. Got my mind set on a portable MAT 16X8 interface, paired with an M4 iPad Pro .. The combo is a little pricier than a 1010 Blue + Blackbox pair, but way more IO and desktop level performance with such brilliant apps as Drambo, Koala, AUM, Loopy Pro and Logic Pro + AUV3 plugins = a no brainer.
👍👍👍
Weeeee weekend came :D Thank you for another great episode!
Thank you so much!!!
Eine schöne Wochenend-Einläut Performance . Sehr toll !!! Schönes Wochenende 🙂

Blackbox is an incredible device. But you are right: Alternative Iphone apps like Koala are also amazing. What a shame Koala is not a gear but an App. So it will not appear on your channel 😞
👍👍👍
He's done plugins before
@@tezeta3725 I was gonna say...
Koala is a pretty widely used app at this point. Lets make the case for it as a 1st Bad Gear App review! He also might have to get an iOS device! We need some more "bad" reviews for Koala!
Welcome to bad apps …
i was waiting for this :)))
It was about time!!! Thanks!!!
I'd love to see you do a review of the Casio VZ-1. Impressive specs and a very unique archetecture, but one of the most awkward interfaces I've ever used.
I've never used a DX7, but based on what ive seen, I'd likely prefer its interface to that of the VZ-1.
I CAN say with absolute certainty that the Korg Prophecy is pretty straightforward by comparison.
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
I love the black box and audio over USB is superb.

Nice one again man! And a pretty sweet dnb track in the middle. 👍
Thank you!!!
Hilarious you uploaded this today, because I'm literally going to Detroit Modular TODAY, to buy one. 🤣 I'm using it to record, and arrange complete songs.
Nice!!!
So I tried my 4th (2 of them are wireless and not only keyboards or mice) midi keyboard/mouse today and it's pretty neat, considering it was around $8. It definitely is a bit weird getting used to the gyroscope as mouse thing though. The 5th mouse I recently "acquired" decided to jump out of the box I let it sleep in to recover and sit on some hats, then later I found it in the kitchen, and it actually ran onto and sat on my foot (perhaps it recognized my stench?). That was weird. No idea where it is now.
Another great installment! The Blackbox does seem like a fairly capable, useful machine. Heh, where is the finale jam footage from?
Edit: Good idea with the vocoder shoutout alternative, too! 👍
Thank you!!! That’s some lost Takashi Murakami footage
@@AudioPilz Np!! Thank you!
i was just thinking the digitakt 2 would replace my blackbox but ill still keep it around for saving limitless long pristine stereo loops to the sd card
This! I've ordered the Digitakt II and they're both getting used live 👌
Nice approach!!!
It's a cool piece if sampling is part of your process, but it certainly comes alive in a rig with help from the ACB et al. Like many, that touchscreen is not for me, but it will be interesting where this company goes from here. Great show and tunes!
Thank you!!!

I love check out your bookshelf. I just finished reading two other books by John Irving; read Widow for One Year last summer. A Prayer for Owen Meany is just about as perfect a book as I ever hope to read…
Nice! I had the honor of meeting him in person once
@@AudioPilz that’s awesome. The only other living novelist I can think of is Salman Rushdie. Highly recommend his rather difficult memoir, “Knife,” just out about a week ago. It’s harsh truth but brilliantly written.
Solid review of this little sampler. I’ve had one for a couple years but moved on from it about 10 months ago after they released 3.1 which broke song mode for me. I will say the highlights of using it for me was when I had an Akai MPD226 pad controller connected to it which worked extremely well and essentially motivated me to get an MPC One to replace the Blackbox. That and the X/Y touch filters which are hidden behind a double tap of the FX button.
Besides the breaking song mode release, the rest of the machine feels like a beta release product that looks to be all but forgotten about by the developers since they released the Nanobox series.
Yeah. The updates seemed to be doing weird stuff too
You've never done an episode on the MPC one, that's right, because it's pretty much perfect
Been there, done that…
I have a few grumbles about my MPC One! That utterly useless step sequencer and the lack of automatically triggering the sampler from the start/repeat of a Sequence (to avoid pratting about extending Sequences to rediculous lengths on audio tracks to be able to jam over a loop and have the sample retain sync).
Edit: I almost forgot to grumble about the kludge needed to set the time signature to anything interesting.
This lil sampler is actually a very nice tool. Sold mine for the lack of FX. Sometimes I miss it a bit (but not enough to buy it again).
👍
As someone who once decided to make a full live show with it, played it once, and never touched the thing again… get an octatrack. Or bring a laptop.
I feel you!!!
I feel like the Octatrack is 10x better for organizing a live set but you can use the Blackbox to bring more tracks
@@acid4breakfast573 Yeah! I originally got into the Blackbox because of Ricky Tinez. He uses it with other things like the Octratrack , too
Curious, what was it that you hated about the Blackbox for a live show? It seems pretty capable..
Stimming seems to use two for livesets, I wonder how he does it.
Love the Black Box. I'd definitely hate it if i was relying on it as my main sequencer, but it plays well in my setup with the Keystep Pro. it can play a lot of roles really well, but it's not powerful enough to be a setup centerpiece. It's great as a slicer/clip launcher/sketchpad/texture tool, and in combination with its tiny size, sturdiness and fast UI, it's really capable for a live setup.
👍👍👍

I wanted to love my 1010 stuff, but there were so many little problems, and good lord; the amount of times I had to send a module in to be repaired - at a premium cost, mind you. Surprisingly easy units to crash and dont get my started on the filters. I sold it all and bought some Roland garbage. 😂
