    We are well into the year (7 weeks) and I think it's our best year so far. My oldest is in 9th grade, so it's a little different. He is managing his planner/assignments on his own for each course, so we'll see how this goes. I've been using Homeschool Planet as a digital tracker for assignments so we can keep track of it all online between kids, my husband and I (it's a group effort). We're also leaving Fridays open to other learning. Some of the kids want to work on gardening and others some robotics. I guess they are exploring some interests then.

      Ninth grade feels like a big step from eighth, at least, that's how I'm feeling this year!

    Sounds like a great first week! The taking kids to bakeries etc is one thing I miss doing, but with 7 kiddos its just not going to happen in our budget :(

      My hope is to take one kid at a time to the bakery so we get a little one-on-one date!

    The Muttart Conservatory is nice to visit in the winter. Our kids enjoy exploring and seeing the different biomes.

    Some Edmonton cafe/bakery recommendations are Little Brick, square 1 (the one on fairway drive is also very close to a beautiful ravine to walk in, especially during the fall), duchess is an amazing bakery (not gf though)

      Thanks for those recommendations! We actually went to one of the Square 1 locations last year when we came out to scope out neighborhoods and met up with a local pastor there! I'll have to try the other locations too!

    Hi Chantel! So sorry to hear about the bus troubles. My mom drives a bus in America and there are always issues with outdated busses breaking down, or busses being used during the school day for field trips or mid day bus routes. If one thing goes wrong sometimes it throws off the bus driver’s ability to get back to the school in a reasonable time.
    Also, I try year round schooling. This is my third year with my oldest and first year with my middle (plus a crazy toddler in the background). We have a habit of needing days off here or there for winter illness and I like finishing main lessons and state testing in April. I like the laid back approach so if we are having a bad day I don’t have to panic about finishing the main part of the school year late. Plus it allows for last minute field days and adventures. I envy those with schedules and structure, but I’ve learned my family is not quite there yet. I’m glad to hear that Reading in 100 Easy Lessons is worth buying again. I nabbed my copy from a “free” pile and wondered if I should use it more regularly with my 5 yo. I’ll have to try it more.

      We did year round schooling for the first few years, it was great! Now that my kids have friends that go to school they prefer to have summers off to spend more time with friends. I love that with homeschooling we can have the flexibility to change.

    Our homeschooling , amazingly, has gone off rather smooth. I have definitely realized we have grown out of our Co-op BUT I made a commitment so I plan to stick with it atm. The families are great but the curated curriculum that goes with it is starting to be a lot of work that I wouldn't even assign if it was just me assigning work. So, I am having some issues because it isn't what I want to focus on and NOT how I feel God is leading our homeschooling. However, I think it will still end up being a good final year with our Co-op. Otherwise, rather smooth start.

    • @ChantelKlassen
      @ChantelKlassen  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've never been a part of a homeschool co-op but I could definitely see myself struggling with that same thing. I'm glad the rest of your year is starting off well though!

    I really enjoyed this video! I am done homeschooling my four kids. I miss the journey. Chantel you are doing so good! Enjoy every moment of it because it goes so fast. We use to homeschool four days out the week and we picked one errand/fun day, usually Thursdays. That was the day we would grab lunch, go grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments or anything else we wanted to do. I loved the music in the background of this video, so calming. Thanks for sharing your journal with us. I would like to try something similar. 💞

    Oh wow, we used the same curriculum to teach ours to read when we homeschooled!!! I wouldn't agree that all 100 lessons were easy either! 😂 Maybe it depends on the child.

    • @ChantelKlassen
      @ChantelKlassen  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I would say the lessons are simple but not always easy! Both of my oldest two got up to about lesson 80/85 before we stopped the book and they were just reading normal books. I figured since the program worked before we may as well stick with it!

    If you're up for a drive try Calmar donuts. It is THE best donuts around, and baked that same day. Beats any Tim Hortons donuts, in my opinion.

    We have started our "homeschool" year.. as in Sam's college classes have started. It is taking a bit more from me to help him plan his week and figure out what the english professor wants.. but math is going well. There is way more busy work for both of them than we did in our homeschool.

    • @ChantelKlassen

      Busy work is a thing I struggle with - why is it a thing?!?!

  • @capturedbyannamarie
    @capturedbyannamarie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It’s so true. Our kids did public school all through elementary, and then we homeschooled. It really is more work, and takes a lot of time. Our daughter is now back at public school, and it’s been a challenge going back to the schedule.

    • @ChantelKlassen
      @ChantelKlassen  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I feel relieved that I'm not the only one who finds public school exhausting! I'm such a rebel I don't like being told I need to be somewhere at a particular time.

    Just out of curiosity, is there ever a reason for the late buses and is this a normal thing? I rode the bus as a child (a long time ago) and I never remember the bus being late.

    • @ChantelKlassen
      @ChantelKlassen  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it will be the norm, the normal bus driver was sick I think so there was a substitute. It just so happens that was our introduction to the bus system here. Hopefully it doesn't continue!

    Half the reason we homeschool is because public is too stressful for me 🤣 Hopefully your second week of all the schools is better. We just hit 6 weeks and its been good but now sports start so the stress is all back lol.

      We probably weren't very smart and started sports the same week as school. 😜
