I made "Carmilla" and I'm in awe of the care and depth to which RagnarRox went with the review, not to mention its entertainment factor. Few people realize that "Carmilla" actually saw a release ("In a Glass Darkly") in which it was presented as manuscript by a fictitious nameless editor/translator. So I didn't quite make that up but rather kept it in, as RagnarRox rightly suspected, with regard to future releases.

I originally came here because of some videos that touched upon franchises I am personally interested in, but I ended up watching every single one of your videos. I definitely enjoyed that we got to see you a little more than usual in this one. No recommendations to make, but certainly looking forward to the next episode of this!

Thank you so much for the Jumpscare warnings. I'm very sensitive to them and it is the reason I avoid horror media, even though they have great stories sometimes (which is the reason I subscribed to you - you often explore the story of a material without the jumpscares and yet you still try to bring the limelight to its atmosphere). I'm following you for about a year now and it seems to me that your skills are getting better and better (not that your skills were bad but I think you get what I mean...). Thank you for trying to show and explore the subjects you are passionate about in creative ways for us.

Holy shit! It's out already?! Looks like I'm not leaving my computer for the next...5.5 hours, according to HowLongToBeat.com. ::cracks knuckles:: Let's have at it!
@@emilyjones9787 thanks for reminding me of how much of a degenerate i am by replying to a 2 month old comment made by a dumber version of myself from the past that will probably affect my current state of mind now *i want to die*
You're such a natural speaker; you could either give a university talk about any subject or read your list of groceries from the supermarket and I would still be absolutely interested and oddly relaxed either way. Great idea for a series, by the way!
While watching this video, I kept thinking of _Scratches_ by Argentinian game-dev Agustín Cordes. It doesn't have much in the way of monsters and such, but it has a solid story and creates a lot of atmosphere that makes the whole thing quite unsettling à la _Penumbra_ or _Amnesia_ (but before them). He's been working on a spiritual successor, _Asylum_ for several years and it looks like it's almost finished. I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Scratches is an all-time favorite of mine and I cannot wait for Asylum to finally drop! I also have a lot of respect for Agustín Cordes, he's just been so awesome and open over the course of Asylum's development.
I'm not a horror gamer but this got me downloading Carmilla and World of Horror in a heartbeat. Thank you so much for sharing these hidden gems! I can't wait for the next video in this series and the wonderful gems you'll share regardless of genre.
Hi RagnarRox, I'd recommend that you take a look at the top down horror survival game called "Darkwood". It was made by 3 polish devs that give the game a really dark depressive eastern european feel a bit like STALKER does. It didn't really fall under the radar for an indie game but it definitely deserves more attention. Just the prologue (about 20 min long) already sets the great atmosphere with it's sound work. I hope you read the comment. Oh and your video is awesome like always.
I want to play ALL of these, right now. I love the way you present such gems with so much care and attention, and your editing really lets the most deliciously chilling moments shine. Your channel is one of the few that I can never watch as "background noise", I just get sucked into the videos start to finish.
I started watching your channel back with the pt mind control video, 4 years ago. I just got back from deployment and It just hit me how much you’ve developed as a content creator and I’m so glad you’re getting the attention you deserve finally. Love you dude! Keep making me scared of the dark at night!
Puppet Combo is the best indie horror game developer today. The gaming community should give them more attention, their work is pure passion for the horror genre.
This is a wonderful idea for a series. Thank you for putting so much work into it. I love learning about these type of games. I will check them all out!
This was pure awesomeness… I´ve been following ur channel for a while now (since I´m a major horror fan) but old school survival horror is my jam. Games like "Glass Staircase" is what I live for, and now thanks to u I have something new to play! Props from Portugal!
Honestly, when I saw this video I nearly yelped with excitement. I love your videos about games that get swept under the rug. I'm always looking for good indie games. There's something so special about finding a piece of media that is made purely for the love of making it. Please keep this series up.
I'm digging the set up! The lighting and color scheme are really good. Very easy on the eyes. And I like the format that you have for this series you're starting up. I'm always interested in indie developers with games that deserve more attention that they get, so I'm all for a series that brings attention to the good ones that are out there, horror or otherwise.
Pretty much everything you make has been pure gold, and this series is no exception. I'd love to see more games covered from various genres, maybe even go back and cover older indie games that everyone's kinda forgotten about.
I'm so glad you made this video. For years excitement about new videogames was rare. Now I know why I still love videogames. It's not because I didn't grow up like some toxic people try to frame it. It's because there are gems out there. You just have to find them. And I did, thanks to you !
The game "2dark" is a overlooked game and I never see someone talking about it. The game is seriously fucked up and I'm still baffled that it was released at all even on consoles. It's one of the games I can't forget even after a long time.
This is a great way to get indie horror games and I can't wait to see your next episode and since you asked what games that could get the attention here are some I can think of: Banned Memories (still being made. Demo) The White Chamber Downfall The Cat Lady
This was a lovely first start for this new series. I always enjoy horror games and some really sparked my interest. Special Faith peeked my interest. Also seeing the story of Carmilla brought to life so beautiful was a joy to watch. I look farward to any new episodes you make for this serie.
Love the concept, especially love the horror theme, there is soooo many completely unknown horror gems out there. Keep it up! Also, tasteful ta-tas at 22:15 10/10
Still my favorite youtuber to this day. The amount of work put into the video and presentation of it is astounding every time. The atmosphere is astounding and gripping. I really like this new series and look forward to how it evolves. We love you Ragnarox!
So excited for this series! I love indie games and horror but I don't get enough of either so this is a great start. As soon as I finish my crazy week I will definitely be downloading and playing through a couple of these.
I hope you do more of this video series. It's very interesting to see video essays on indie games like this because it's rare. Sure a lot of people have played or more likely watched someone play these but it's nice to hear someone dissect them.
I like the format, think it’s a worthwhile endeavour championing these small dev individuals or teams. I never even heard of the platform “itch” so will be taking a serious look at it following this vid. Thank you
That's a wonderful video and I really can't wait to see more. Those kinds of indie, horrific games are so numerous and a lot are hidden gems that deserve way more recognition than what they get. I could recommend a lot of those, but for now I mostly think about Hylics. It's a surreal and fascinating experience. The game is made in clay animation and everything oozes originality and creativity. It's on Steam right now, and the creator is currently working on Hylics 2.
What a gem of a video. I feel like this series can really take and show what good developers can do with horror games. Good stuff, looking forward to the next one!
An Indie title that doesn't get enough love? I know a game called Iji, It was released before the Indie boom, it's an amazing Metroid esque shooter with an incredible soundtrack, but It never got the Love It deserves and that pisses me off. I remember How the main character grows colder the more she kills, by the start of the game she even apologises after killing enemies during gameplay, and by the end she starts yelling at them, as if she Lost her humanity thanks to all the killing. The Boss fights are some of the craziest fights i've seen in a 2D side scroller to this day, the graphics are simple but detailed. The story is kinda cliche, but character development is the focus here x.x I've been waiting for a decade tô see this game get the recognition It deserves mah dude, Iji is one of my favorite games ever.
I really enjoyed this video! You picked four great games I had not heard of and I liked your narration. :) I liked the look of all four games and am interested to play World of Horror and Carmilla in particular for myself when I have the time. I hope this series proves popular and you decide to make more! Giving niche games of high quality a spotlight is a great thing. Also, your observation that a game like Faith could have been THE big thing if released in another time and circumstances was very interesting food for thought for me! It's fascinating to imagine.
This was a really awesome video, and I seriously have to give props to all the devs who made these amazing games. The care and effort was amazing! I'm definitely going to be recommending the games to my friends and possibly even going over to tip them. I'm a huge fan of the 80's VHS aesthetic, so Puppet Combo is a fav dev team of mine. Also I would seriously love to see more of this series! If you did more that would be amazing. In my opinion, the way you've done this one would work for future episodes. I can't wait to see more!
Hello. I very much enjoyed your video and content of your channel as a whole. You are probably one of the most underrated content creators on this platform, in my opinion, when it comes to video game essays, horror games, movies and books. Thank you for not giving up on delivering your awesome material despite all TH-cam’s attempts to derail you channel.
Thank you for pointing out the struggles indie developers have to face. Game developers are not the only artists who face these problems, I am an alternative indie musician and it's frustrating trying to get my music out there in an indie market that is over-saturated with bad amateur music. I'm hoping it's cool that I mention my music since you're allowing indie developers to self-advertise here. I would highly recommend you check out Hellnight, Koudelka, and Galerians. They may not be indie games, but they do come from low-budget companies and are criminally underrated.
I love the idea of this series, please continue!!! I did not know about itchio. It gives me the same feeling of going into dusty back shelves and bargain boxes looking for the odd diamonds you could find.
im very excited for this series! i found ur channel through the particular horror u talk about and im rlly keen to hear about more works that im not aware of! im rlly interested to see what sort of games u enjoy from various genres and what u recommend seeing as everything uve covered on ur channel jsut absolutely makes me want to run out and find the game or movie uve talked about
I like this kind of video pal, I think as long as you showcase a lot of different games in your videos it should be a good video series. I'm actually going to get the glass staircase, so thanks for the showcase!
This is a very lovely video series concept, and the games you've chosen to showcase in this first episode all look incredibly interesting. I already knew FAITH going into this, but I'll be sure to check out the other ones you've recommended, as they all look to be right up my alley. And I just want to add, as an indie developer who knows what it's like to pour years' worth of hard work into a game just to watch it get buried on release, I really do appreciate you doing this. All we can do is support each other, because there's so much artistic talent and creativity going into these small games, and it's a crime that more people don't get to know them.
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. The algorithm appears to have worked in my favor for once. Your narration and editing are fantastic. I look forward to looking at your back catalog and seeing your new shit. Thanks. I hit that goddamn sub button in the first five minutes. Raise hell.
Thanks to you, I became a patreon supporter for puppet combo and tried out the Glass Staircase. I do not regret this choice one bit. Although I will say, I feel that jumpscare you showed is there for a reason, for me, I do not enjoy them since they feel cheap, but the effect it had on me as I was beginning to get bored of the slowed paced beginning, it knocked me out of my bored state, now alert again as the proper atmosphere of the game could sink its claws into me. The introduction of everything could of been handled better but it’s quite effective. I feel the remaining jumpscares were handled much better with the atmosphere building up then Boop, instant fright payoff.
Love the concept! It's always a good day to talk about games that need more love. Speaking of, my pick is The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, a bullet hell shooter currently in Early Access. It's the best introduction to the genre I've seen yet, and it really trains you properly to take on its own challenges the more you play. I've got something like 120 hours in by now, and it's my game of choice to play when listening to podcasts or videos (incidentally, the case while watching your video).
What an amazingly curated list. Giving money to everything featured in this video and going to enjoy all these works! Except faith becuase... well ive already played it a couple times! Excellent work
What a great first episode! I personally haven't heard of any of these games (which is an absolute shame, because even just from this video you can tell that they were truly labours of love), but all of them have piqued my interest massively and I'll definitely be checking them all out. I have absolutely no critiques about this video, either! It was incredibly informative and well researched, whilst also being extremely respectful to the creators, and hearing what you personally thought about them made me more interested than I might have been had I just read a run down of them. I can't wait to see more of this series!
Thanks man. As a Lovecraft/Ito-lover I always had an eye on World of Horror and - though grewing up with minimalistic games - the presentation and the gameplay I didn't get on the first glimpse kinda scared me off. But after you put it so good together I finally gonna give it a try. As for the series I would definitely love more Horror/Eldritch games. :)
This was quite a fascinating spotlight on a great selection of games that don't seem to get the sort of attention they deserve. Your narration is spot on and very pleasant to hear, and the overall atmosphere is just perfect. I do plan to give most if not all of these games a try, but I must say that Carmilla intrigues me the most. It seems as if a lot of love and care was put into developing it into a fascinating story, and it appeals to both the horror and yuri enthusiast within me. Looking forward to giving that a thorough playthrough!
i'd love for you to cover why am i dead at sea, or the why am i dead series as a whole. great game, amazing storyline, little to no coverage/fanfare whatsoever... it definitely deserves a minute or two in the spotlight!
This format is excellent. One of my favorite things about Kotaku is they do highlights on hidden gems you only hear about from other people and many people don’t know about itch.io to begin with. Thanks to content like this I heard about games like The Hex, Pony Island, Frog Fractions and a little game you might have heard of called Undertale. Keep up the great work, I love the channel and have been watching since 2017.
This was awesome, I'm so excited to see more about indie games that I otherwise would have never heard of. Speaking of, I know it's been mentioned before, but you should definitely do a piece on Darkwood. Never before have I had a game tick so many boxes for me. :)
RagnarRox, thank you so much for showcasing these wonderful works of art. I honestly feel most of triple A and other heavily promoted titles absolutely have no soul these days. Seeing the games featured in this episode being created with love by talented and hard working developers with a vision and good taste brings a breath of fresh air. I am very excited to learn about more titles in your future videos!
Absolutely amazing, you never disappoint with your videos and this is no exception. Bringing light to incredible works to your viewers that otherwise would have been overlooked is an amazing service to us and the creators. Keep up the good work Ragnar!
This is really wonderful, I'm excited to see more of this series and to get introduced to more and more fantastic indie gems. All of these games look fascinating, and I'm excited to give them a try. Thank you for putting this out and highlighting some true works of passion.
This is a great idea for another series on this channel. I love discovering unknown or overlooked good games. I'd like to see a more sci fi themed recommendation next!
great vid as always! i'm 100% in support of this concept :D im super happy to see one of my fave youtubers cover some of my fave games, thank you so much for bringing attention to them!! \o/ i've only recently learned about their games, but i think you should check out amon26's work! their horror platformer game Gyossait has a deluxe version up on itchio which also includes some of their previous games + some neat extras. i've yet to go through all of them, but the gorgeous pixel art and wonderfully dark atmosphere of the games already warrant a checking-out, imo :o
your tone and manner of speaking remind me of a horror show i watched as a kid who's name escapes me for the moment, needless to say I am now following your channel good human of the internet
As per usual, fantastic content. I think this is such an amazing idea, you can be sure I've picked up each of these games as a result of a well presented, thoughtful and interesting video, they deserve every $1 they get. Perfect for playing on my laptop in bed during the middle of the night, like I used to as a teen when I lived in the middle of nowhere.
I loveeee seeing this concept as a platform for these creators! I hadn’t heard of the VN adaptation of carmillia yet and will definitely check it out (the book was originally the first form of media that made me realize I was gay). Ty for making this and I look forward for more videos in this series!
Thanks for such an interesting new series. I'm always hunting for new and frightening horror games and now I have two more to add to my library. You rock!
Well, I guess it's time to finally talk about my game. I don't have any screenshots yet, I've been working on it for about 2 months and I am taking the time to code everything properly (because the main reason indie devs don't finish their games isn't lack of motivation, it's spaghetti code that makes it super hard to work on the game) Anyway, I am very bad at advertising, so I'll just say I am trying to recreate the feel of the silent hill games, mainly the first one since its graphic style is easier to recreate. I feel like I shouldn't talk about it because it's not a game yet (you can move the character, interact with doors and objects, pickup items, but many more features are missing) Still I would like to thank Ragnar, for the opportunity you're giving to indie game devs, and I will try my best to work on a demo or a prototype!
How are you developping your game? Do you use an engine like unity or unreal? Or are you making your own "engine" (if yes, with what programming language)? Is it a 2D or a 3D game? How are you creating the visuals of the game?
@@darthsauron255 Right now I'm in the middle of moving into a different town, so development is stalled a bit. As for the engine, I am using unity, it's a 3d game in the graphic style of the first silent hill. The models will be made with blender! If you have anymore questions I'd be glad to answer them :)
>Literally only went on itchio to play kitty horrorshow games, never really taking the time to consider the platform legitimately. >Oh hai Ragnar. >Buys 3 games from Itchio. Gozaimathanks Ragnar!
I really enjoyed the video. I like you breaking down the genres at the beginning. Maybe break them down in the title as well to make them easier to browse once more videos come into being? And maybe some other sources of horror? (books, board games, etc). All this is just some ideas. I love your videos and trust you to find the best way to allow this new idea to grow.
Thanks for the recommendations, I can't wait to give these a try! I dig your Lakeside Amusement Park shirt. I appreciate the exposure and call to action to support indie games.

Holy shit! It's out already?! Looks like I'm not leaving my computer for the next...5.5 hours, according to HowLongToBeat.com. ::cracks knuckles:: Let's have at it!
I loved me some Cat Lady. Lorelei has the same aesthetic, but with more experienced polish, and i cannot wait to try her out!
I came to suggest the same thing!
You are the first TH-camr who 100% looks like he sounds xD, and yeah you look like a character straight out of VTM:B, that's a compliment.
I think Im in love seeing how his voice match with his face
Not to mention that he also looks like a young Johnny Depp.

You're such a natural speaker; you could either give a university talk about any subject or read your list of groceries from the supermarket and I would still be absolutely interested and oddly relaxed either way. Great idea for a series, by the way!

How does it bother you ?
I can't wait for Asylum
The animations in Faith is so appaling from the rest of the game I love it
Honestly, when I saw this video I nearly yelped with excitement.
WOW! I've never heard of it before but DAMN amazing stuff seriously gets buried.
It's by the guy behind Alone in the Dark and Relentless.
Excellent as always, I'm gonna try out some of the games you talked about, Your recommendations never disappoint ;) keep it up Ragnar
Profound , immersive , yet charming and hipnotic narrative! Lieaving you begging for more! Outstanding work!
This is a great way to get indie horror games and I can't wait to see your next episode and since you asked what games that could get the attention here are some I can think of:
Banned Memories (still being made. Demo)
The White Chamber
Downfall
The Cat Lady
Your content is so underrated, it's criminal.
Thank you
Glad to see Puppet Combo's games here, he does a marvelous job capturing the feel of VHS 1980s horror movies in his games.
Absolutely adored this video, I hope you can continue making them as a series, gave me lots of new interesting games to look at. Thank you!
I think the format is perfect! All the games look awesome and I'll definitely support them all.
The story is kinda cliche, but character development is the focus here x.x
I've been waiting for a decade tô see this game get the recognition It deserves mah dude, Iji is one of my favorite games ever.
Thank you for helping give these games the chance to be played and support these talented artists 👏🏼🙌🏼
Absolutely cool to point it out. I strongly empathize with the struggle anyway, so best wishes to not let the frustration win.
I love the idea of this series, please continue!!! I did not know about itchio. It gives me the same feeling of going into dusty back shelves and bargain boxes looking for the odd diamonds you could find.
Oh man how did I miss this? I'm beyond thrilled to see some new recommendations, especially for horror! Passing this onto some friends.
im very excited for this series! i found ur channel through the particular horror u talk about and im rlly keen to hear about more works that im not aware of! im rlly interested to see what sort of games u enjoy from various genres and what u recommend seeing as everything uve covered on ur channel jsut absolutely makes me want to run out and find the game or movie uve talked about
I think Puppet Combo games are the kind of horror games I was looking for.
Great video!
All we can do is support each other, because there's so much artistic talent and creativity going into these small games, and it's a crime that more people don't get to know them.
this channel can't seem to run out of quality content. having that power is incredible!
I actually really liked this format! I would totally watch more videos like this!
This is a great video! I've been having a little bit of AAA fatigue, and these lists are the perfect remedy.
Ragnar, I love your new on-camera style. This is such a good direction!
This might be my favorite video you've ever put out, Ragnar. I'll definitely check all of these out.
i'd love for you to cover why am i dead at sea, or the why am i dead series as a whole. great game, amazing storyline, little to no coverage/fanfare whatsoever... it definitely deserves a minute or two in the spotlight!
Thank you for taking the time to make such a well-produced video, bringing light to obscure well made Creations is always wonderful to see.
This is really wonderful, I'm excited to see more of this series and to get introduced to more and more fantastic indie gems. All of these games look fascinating, and I'm excited to give them a try. Thank you for putting this out and highlighting some true works of passion.
excited for this series!!
I love your channel. You consistently keep a cerain bleak mood that makes your presentations hypnotic.
i've only recently learned about their games, but i think you should check out amon26's work! their horror platformer game Gyossait has a deluxe version up on itchio which also includes some of their previous games + some neat extras. i've yet to go through all of them, but the gorgeous pixel art and wonderfully dark atmosphere of the games already warrant a checking-out, imo :o
your tone and manner of speaking remind me of a horror show i watched as a kid who's name escapes me for the moment, needless to say I am now following your channel good human of the internet
You should... nail this series to the wall, amazing work
Great start to what I’m sure will be a great series. Loved the games you highlighted.
I don't have any screenshots yet, I've been working on it for about 2 months and I am taking the time to code everything properly (because the main reason indie devs don't finish their games isn't lack of motivation, it's spaghetti code that makes it super hard to work on the game)
Anyway, I am very bad at advertising, so I'll just say I am trying to recreate the feel of the silent hill games, mainly the first one since its graphic style is easier to recreate.
I feel like I shouldn't talk about it because it's not a game yet (you can move the character, interact with doors and objects, pickup items, but many more features are missing)
Still I would like to thank Ragnar, for the opportunity you're giving to indie game devs, and I will try my best to work on a demo or a prototype!
@Wolter Woltolvsky hey thanks a lot! It's nice to hear something like this :)
@NoobDJ hey thanks, I am working on uploading a sort of "prototype" as soon as possible!
Gozaimathanks Ragnar!
kitty horroshow games? whats that?
They were really high on the list for this video
kittyhorrorshow.itch.io/
This is exactly the kind of content that I've been looking for, thanks!
I can't believe I'm more interested in playing indie games more than AAA games XD
specially The glass staircase
I really enjoyed the video. I like you breaking down the genres at the beginning. Maybe break them down in the title as well to make them easier to browse once more videos come into being? And maybe some other sources of horror? (books, board games, etc). All this is just some ideas. I love your videos and trust you to find the best way to allow this new idea to grow.
Thanks for the recommendations, I can't wait to give these a try! I dig your Lakeside Amusement Park shirt. I appreciate the exposure and call to action to support indie games.
