Much Jamaican patois is carried down from African words. (Pickin became Pickney, for child. Many more.)

Where does the famous insulting Jamaican patois word "Bombo Clat" come from? The word is actually "Bombo Cloth". Bombo or Bommo is an ancient Akan manufactured cloth. The Akans are from modern day Ghana and Ivory Coast. The thick strips of this cloth were used by women as underwear and menstrual pads, tucked between a bunch of waist beads with the extra hanging in the front and back. People in Africa used to compare stupid people to these menstrual cloth and so it was carried over to Jamaica 🇯🇲 as a word of insult. The Akan word for underwear is Amoasie but the cloth used mostly by women for underwear in the olden days was Bombo or Bommo Cloth.

Yes. Princess is always princess. Sometimes Queen can be changed to Queenie/ Queeny. So you will hear a lot of people with the nickname “Queenie”.

How do say I am sorry to family when a Jamaican friend dies?
Honestly, In some cases, especially serious cases, I use English. So I would say, sorry for you loss, or my condolence or something like that. If I am speaking with someone that I am very close with and we are both speaking in the Jamaican language we might say things like "Jah know star, mi kyaa believe seh just gone so" or "di ting set a way..." or something like that. But it depends on your relationship with the person. If you are not close it might be better to just stick to the tried and true "I'm sorry for your loss/ My condolence"

@@lulibella3Some people will also say "Life's journey". I guess it means "it is what it is". But might be rude if speaking to a Christian or Christian minded person as I usually hear Rastafari or Rasta minded people use it.
