I’m a 43 yr old 5’5” 165lb purple belt. I’m always underestimated too. I primarily do no gi with no rank or color on my rash guard. I would like to add to new guys and gals. If at any point your getting beat up too much, getting tweaked too often, getting crazy bruises, and black eyes. Plus the high ranks are just crushing you, like almost being mean and won’t let you do anything. This is you, the new person, going way to hard. Most injured upper ranks are injured by new white belts. We call this spazing. What happened? The dude spazed on. Upper ranks will typically go as hard as you go. I have stopped going for arm bars on new guys because they will yank and jerk their arm out in the way it would break. I’m forced to let it go for the safety of the new person. Plus now they think they have legitimately gotten out of an arm bar by yanking as hard as they can out of it. You need to chill, slowdown, and don’t panic. I hate crushing new people, but for my safety and theirs, I’m going to shut you down and make your roll very uncomfortable. Plus if your a strong big guy that comes in and you start man handling smaller new people that have been training under a year… the upper ranks may not say anything to ether of you, but I, kid you not, we are going to remember it when it’s our turn to roll with you. I know I’m very protective of my lower ranked teammates. I’m fresh out of knee surgery because of a previous non BJJ knee injury getting re-injured by a spazy first day, very strong guy, that didn’t realize the difference of drilling, and rolling. I was teaching a technique and he spazed. Not his fault but now I’m out for a few months.

Great video and appreciate the tips.
For context, I’ve got 20+ years of Muay Thai experience. I’m over 40 and about to take my first BJJ class. Wearing a cup is necessary in Muay Thai. Do guys wear cups in BJJ; conflicting info online. so I wanted to get your thoughts on it

No cup for me, but do wear compression shorts to keep everything secure

I’m a 43 yr old BJJ purple belt. I strictly do no gi. I have never worn a cup. The only guy that wear a cup are our MMA guys.

Good video helped out a lot, I been doing sports and karate throughout my life so i know the struggle being the "new guy". I cant wait to get my ass kicked around, gotta start somewhere right lol. I def want to do competition, when you think the best time to start (months/ years) as a white belt?

Welcome to the journey brother! Have you landed on a school to train at yet? As soon as the thought hits you to compete, you should do it. Earlier the better so there is less pressure. You learn a ton from competing. Keep me updated, I want to start a video series talking to guys along their journey.
