    The band members are all descendents of survivors of the Armenian genocide. All their music has the pain of that event in them.

    Every song from System of a Down is pretty incredible, intense, and impactful....it takes many times listening to many of them to really understand them. I hope you will react to more of them soon.

    The first time you hear Chop Suey, you usually don"t know what to think about it. Then if you listen it a second time you begin to understand. At the third time, you"re trapped, and it ends up with over a billion views on TH-cam 🤘

    I heard this song for the first time when I was a teenager. Yes, it was jarring at first, but it didn't take very long to realize that it was also something very special. There is no other metal band in the past, present, and likely future who masters this particular expression of metal. The Armenian-influenced scales they use, which give them their distinctive melodies, the radical juxtapositions of meditative and intense, the heavy rhythms, the depth of the subject matter, in combination make for quite powerful music.
    The song is apparently about how people are viewed differently depending on how they died. A person who died of a drug overdose will be viewed differently from a person who died of old age, for example, and questioning how fair this really is given the totality of the context of the their lives. It's actually quite a powerful message of acceptance of other people, and one that is much harder to put into practice.

    I think the first time I heard this song was as a pre-teen. I didn't like it then, I think it was simply too much at once for me at that age. It felt overwhelming and made me uncomfortable. As I grew older I started getting into rock and metal. The next time I heard this song, I was able to appreciate it. It didn't overwhelm me anymore. Becoming fluent in English in the meantime also helped, since I could then appreciate the lyrics.
    All that is to say, I think it makes sense to be overwhelmed and uncomfortable listening to Chop Suey if you are not used to heavier music. It's like being thrown headfirst into the deep end of a pool before you've learnt to swim. It's a very different experience to knowing how to swim and jumping in for fun.

    It seems as though The Loud Guys are not accustomed to rhythm, tempo and mood changes in songs. I suppose it can be pretty jarring or the uninitiated but as an old school rocker this was actually pretty tame.

    The first time I heard the song was when I watched the music and I was pretty shell-shocked too. But it's stuck with me and now they're one of my favourite bands full-time.

    I seen them in concert 7 times, they're crazier live. But they're a great band, also the drummer John owns Torpedo Comics in Las Vegas!

    As an indian and a metalhead. I got into metal wirh system of a down. And chop suey is very special to me. System of a down has an essence of prog rock/metal switches, as i say..." Only the people who have seen life of what it is, will understand the beauty behind the chaos of the metal genre ".

    The Guitarist has Henna instead of tattoos. They are VERY political. Look for Anti-Governmental Control and Anti-War themes. B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bombs) is great. How can you not like the lyrics if you can not understand them or hear them all?

  • @rnoid

    You guys should listen to Deep Purple - Child in Time(1970), Rainbow - Stargazer(1976), and SOAD - BYOB. In that order, to get an appreciation for the style differences over time.

  • @SJ-di5zu
    @SJ-di5zu ปีที่แล้ว

    I mean you kinda have to understand the lyrics to know if you like or dislike them. It’s not some angsty song about their own depression; it’s them defending those with depression and committing suicide, saying we shouldn’t judge them for the decision they made and we should mourn them. The chaotic transitions are to exhibit how a depressed person feels, with life coming at them so quickly and the pain of trying to live. How they wish everything would slow down and that others would stop putting so much pressure on them.
    Anyways, I appreciate the honest reaction. That’s kinda rare on TH-cam sometimes

    I can't remember, but I think it was about a woman that overdosed or intentionally ended herself. Something like that. Might be thinking of another of their songs though.

    I'll explain what you just watched.
    This song is representing the controversy over suicidal action. "Trust in my, self righteous suicide." The mundane, repetitive existence "wake up! grab a brush, put on a little makeup." It's not a cautionary tale but a self exploratory one, that says we cannot judge those who are so sad they can't bear to live.
    Suicide is never the answer. I don't condone it. I'm simply stating that that's how deep this song goes.

    System of a Down's music is hard to understand without knowing their history. Theyre families are immigrants from Armenia, and they song about their peoples tragic history through a heavy metal medium. If you look online you will find them supporting many Armenian causes.

    Wow, you guys are the first reaction people I ever saw who didn't like/love this song - especially the switch up. Its ok, when I first heard it years ago I didn't give it much thought either - until I dove into the meanings/lyrics of their songs as well as being older and appreciate the skill this band has.

    • @fluffylittlebear
      @fluffylittlebear ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lyrics might be meaningful, but some people just don't like metal. It all sounds horrible to me. Bunch of loud music and screaming that all jumbles together and creates a sound that, to me, is like nails on a chalkboard.

    • @TheGroovyBanana
      @TheGroovyBanana ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fluffylittlebear I love metal as heavy as deathcore, but even for me when I first listened to Chop Suey it felt off. I listened to it for awhile and I realized that things being off tempo and a bit dissonant is on purpose.

    The reason the video is strange is because he's trying to represent the monster inside. The angels deserve to die part is about how innocents are killed in the name of religion. His family are survivors of a religious genocide committed by turkey against the Armenian people at the beginning of the 20th century.

    It's jolting. It's disturbing . It's meant to do exactly to you what the Armenian genocide did and continues to do to it's people. It's a real statement on war and the realities with generational casualties of war and violence. Sometimes you have to give songs like this a few times to let the message sink in...it's considered a masterpiece in the rock genre. :)

    This is a very personal song to me and I see the reaction is one of "I do not like this anger", but I always saw the anger in this song as an "internal Anger", so like an anger directed inwards. Not an anger "aimed at another person", which is war like. You can be a passive person, yet have internal conflict as harsh as this song. The angels are the ones who have left us, sadly.
