My Farm Has A $1,358,000 Problem

  • My farm has spent $1,358,000 so far on this year's crop. I have not produced any income and bills keep racking up. Crop prices are down big time but we have potential for excellent yields. Will the farm make enough money to turn a profit, or will we slide further into debt? Today I attempt to answer these questions.

Young man I am a retired farmer. I have never put myself in that much debt. If you want to make it you need to diversify. Don’t rely just on corn and soybeans. We were into turkey, chicken, cattle and grain. The corn prices are terrible this year. I wish you the best of luck. Will say a prayer you don’t go bankrupt and lose your farm.

Same old story farmers getting screwed on the sale price of their product. I wish Cole would check what prices were 10 years ago, 20 years ago, etc. and share them. I grew up on a farm and remember Dad talking about the prices of different grains being more per bushel many decades previous than what we were getting when i was growing up. I can remember as a teenager, reading some University Professor POS saying the reason so many farmers were going bankrupt was they were poor at farming. No, they were getting screwed on the price of their product ya scumbag. Reading what that clown said made me so damn mad i would have liked to fatten his lips and knock out a few teeth. This was back in the middle 1960's early '70's. My Dad and Mom retired (mixed farming too) sold the farm and i ended up working for the railroad over 40 years. I can remember how hard my parents worked, no vacations either. My Dad was about 15 i think when his Father suddenly died in his 50's of a brain aneurism. His one older brother had his own farm. Although i recall Dad telling the story about his brother racing to town on a "retired" racehorse they had, to get a doctor. The story was that it was 5 miles to town and he got there in something like 5 minutes or so. This was back in the days of farming with teams of horses. From what i understood Dad took over the farm with his Mom and one sister who later married and left as well. This was long before i was ever born.

Someone didn't like what i had to say about a University Professor blaming farmers for going broke many years ago, so i would assume it was YT who deleted it? Needless to say, i didn't agree with what the so-called "educated" man had to say.

@edwardh1591 You probably didn't farm thousands of acres like he does either... Seems quite judgmental of you to assume.... Plus, Cole is pretty genius with crop insurance, and tax loopholes, and subsidies, and side hustles, etc. Like he said in the video, farming isn't their only source of income. Plus, those numbers are before he actually sells the crops, so I'm sure they will be back in the black at that time. Also, remember he's several generations deep in farming so he's got at minimum several generations of knowledge that have been handed down to him. It's not like he just fell off the turnip truck and thought.... I think I'll plant some corn today.

Could you please discuss Government Subsidies, and if Cornstar Farms has or will receive subsidies? How does that play into your budgeting? Or is that the Crop Insurance you purchase? Do you half to pay back government subsidies? I get a lot of questions when I discuss farming with friends and relatives. This seems like something none of the TH-cam farmers get into?! Wondering why?

Id say on an average year you’ll make anywhere from 15%-20% profit on your yearly investment. The only problem he has is his banker is fucking him bad. I’m 22 and farm full time. I shop around for my loc operating note every year. The cheapest interest I could get was 7.25 and a 1% dividend (and the dividend isn’t a guarantee) and I locked in a 7.5% rate. With that being said, I suspect you are right about his banker fucking him but at the same time, did he get his loan on the same exact day you got yours and did the rates change the day after he signed his loan and he kicked himself in the tail end? I suspect we will never really know that answer. What I am curious about is something he did not talk about but I am aware of from having rented a house smack dab in the middle of a cattle farm and having a great relationship with that cattle farmer. He taught me to operate one of his tractors to help move feed as needed and he gave me a very minimal insight into the cattle farming business. I am curious if Cole or even you for that fact, leave out grant monies? I know the cattle farmer was pulling in roughly $1,500,000.00 in grants per year. I don't know but assume that is federal grants. Just curious if those grants are being left out of his figures or does he or even you not bother with grants as well as if they are even available to crop farmers???

@@williamevans6468 Is this in the USA or where? I find that hard to believe that he would be getting that kind of money on a yearly basis. I am sure whatever amount he gets has to be paid back. So many people have the idea that farmers are super rich. From what little i have read some governments were offering grants to those just starting out in the business because of so many farmers retiring and not being replaced. So, they introduced grants to try and encourage people. But those grants have to be applied for and i am sure conditions have to be met and money paid back. I w3ould hope that someone who really knows what is going on would reply to your comment. Again, i kind of doubt the government would give those kinds of dollars to a single farm on a yearly basis with no strings attached.

My favorite thing about the corn plant is its ability to funnel moisture directly to its roots via the stalk and funnel shaped leaf attachment. The plant allows rain to shoot straight down the stalk, and does an amazing job to collect drizzle, fog condensate, or even dew. This allows the corn to collect all moisture available to thrive and survive even when the rain refuses to come.

Watching TH-cam channels has become a replacement of TV. Many no longer care about the fantasy make believe world that’s out there. No one cares what these actors think politically. And i think REAL people get sick of them cramming their beliefs down our throats. So we come here and watch how other real people live their real lives. This channel in particular is wonderful to see how family traditions last for generations. How there are still young people out there that love and respect their parents and God. How one young man can do so much and get so much accomplished. We have more of a chance to get to know you in real life than any of the posers in Hollywood. I’m guessing our beliefs align more and we are out here just waiting for the next drop. Will he get that water under control? I gotta know!

I grew up in NW Ohio on a 149 acre farm. My father also had a 2nd job to make ends meet. My mother also ran the equipment. I remember how each year was a gamble on whether we made money or not. My mom always said that farmers were optimistic pessimists. In the spring, we watched the weather and prayed we would get the crops planted. In the summer we watched the weather and prayed we would have the right amount of rain. In the fall we would watch the weather and prayed we could get the crops in before it snowed. In the winter we watched the weather, just because it was habit. lol. I am retired now but I still watch the weather and critique weedy or poor looking crops. I have been watching your channel for about 5 or 6 years now and really enjoy this channel.

You inherited a well-established business, including a home that you're able to expense. This is the annual holding period before selling your product, so it's not like you're starting out at $0. Another way to look at it: Start from the net income from last year's crops/business, and THEN begin deducting this year's expenses. I'm betting the number isn't -$1.358M.
But click-bait is a powerful thing.

38:07 I haven’t stopped in for quite some time. I have to compliment you on your youth and your extensive knowledge. I immensely enjoyed learning about how you compute yield and how much work goes into what it takes to run such a large farm--the influence of the weather, disease, planting, how to plant, dealing with construction jerks, etc. How do you determine what nutrients and chemicals to use on your crops? Do you keep abreast of possible dangerous chemicals? Do you rent farms? How many acres do you plant? I am blown away by the complexity of the farming process and commend you for your knowledge and I am so glad for the education. Thank you!!! Your family must be so proud of you!!! Kudos!!!😊

I subscribed so that I could learn a bit about farming... but I think I got addicted to the remodel because I've been wondering when the next progress video was going to come out and was glad to see an upload today... for about 5 seconds ... which is when I realized it was NOT a progress episode but another installment on the farming. Sigh! Thanks for sharing all of this with us Cole - though THIS estimated yield video goes into a little bit more detail than I really wanted - and THAT just makes me miss the progress on the house even more.
