Thanks a million for showing the re-opening of the old Yankee Stadium in 1976. Bob Shepherd's voice was like a Godly presence to me. Sounded authoritative and full of class. The only thing with the above is that he accidently gave the date of the Giants -Colts NFL overtime title game as Dec. 12, 1958. It was actually Dec. 29 that year. But, that aside, it was always great to watch a Yankee Stadium event (Yankees or Giants game) and hear that monumental voice booming in the background on TV (of course, you would really capture the spirit of it in person). May Mr. Robert Shepherd rest in peace. Things will never be the same.

Yes the renovation was quite extensive but the structure remained the same. The Stadium was originally introduced as a "new Yankee Stadium" but this was quickly dropped as people realized that the tradition hadn't been lost after the renovation. The stadium was basically a piece of crap from 1960-1973 so they really needed quite a bit of work
I agree on everything you said. The renovation was fantastic and did nothing to take away from the tradition of the Stadium. Some traditionalists probably wanted it to stay the same, but it was a piece of crap at that time in the late 60s and early 70s. The worst thing that can be said about the renovated stadium, and it isn't such a small criticism, is that it cost almost 100 million dollars to renovate and that was 4 times the original estimated cost. New York was in a very bad financial situation during that time and those who felt it was a waste of taxpayer money had a valid point.
The fact that it's a joke team is more due to injuries now. I sincerely hope they can pick up one or two players to help out after the break. As far as the stadium goes, it makes me sick to my stomach.
The new Yankee Stadium is not and never will be the home of the Yankees. Yankee Stadium, sadly, has died. It is as close to sacrilege as you'll ever see in professional sports. It is sad that this shrine no longer exists.
I mean it literally does exist, the new stadium is a exact fucking replica, but if you’re gonna get prissy about it, the original Yankee Stadium was for all intents and purposes replaced in the 76 renovations
Not ONE single Yankee went to Bob Sheppard's funeral, just in case you were wondering if they were successful in destroying their souls in exchange for ill-gotten gains (they aced the conversion).
That was a disgrace. Especially Jeter, who used his voice recording to introduce him for the rest of his career. But didn't attend the funeral. Disgraceful. In fact seats up front were saved for Yankee players and personal. The section was empty, except for Brian Cashman. I believe he was the only one who attended.
This 1974-75 renovation did nothing to detract from the mystique and sense of reverence that one felt upon entering the stadium. It is the only stadium I've ever been in where I could feel a true sense of history, a sense of majesty, an aura. The renovation was a good one, it was skillfully done. I never got to see a game at the original 1923-1973 Stadium, but judging from pictures I've seen I feel the renovation was justified. They got rid of the view-obstructing pillars, scaled down the capacity by about 15%, and made it a cozier park. Given the fact that New York was bankrupt at the time, I suppose one could argue that money could have been spent better elsewhere, but that's another matter. Now, as far as the new stadium, the one that took the place of this one and opened in 2009, that one was absolutely not necessary. That was a money-making venture by the Yankees. They were already selling out the stadium and making money, but the suits in the front office used the excuse of forward thinking as a justification to build a stadium that is a shrine to excess and caters mainly to the wealthy. In so many ways the Yankee management of today reflects the cold-hearted, greedy spirit of uncontrolled capitalism and dehumanizing elitism. I will never set foot in there. The Mets needed a new stadium being as that Shea was a dump. The Yanks tore down a jewel to build a temple to unrestrained consumerism and that elite 1%. Shame on them.
If you have ever toured the old stadium, than you know a new or at least updated stadium was needed. Players facilities were horrible. The Boss wanted more private boxes for the suits. The Yanks could have done a better job of rebuilding this current stadium. The previous stadium was all about the game. the current stadium is about everything but. it looks like they are trying to make the stadium more fan friendly and more kid friendly, by revising the left and right field areas.
Also, the 74-75 renovation was done substandard. Cracks began to appear in the cinder blocks that were used almost immediately. The Yanks squeezed 30 years out of that renovation. The stadium should have been torn down in the 90's, but there was no $$. As a long time fan, I don't have an issue with building a new stadium. I just have an issue with the design.
I never toured the old one and never saw the players' facilities. I went to about 20-25 games there from 1979-2001. The previous stadium was all about the game and that's why I loved it. It was aesthetically beautiful.

I've no doubt the original stadium was a shrine, but the renovation didn't take away all the tradition and beauty. What you have now is a new location which wasn't needed. The original no longer exists. In 76,it was just a renovation, and some of the changes helped the sight lines and were needed. The one they have now simply wasn't needed. It's called greed. To say the original closed applies to what happened after 2008, not 1973.
If you don’t think it was needed then you’re clueless. It would take innings to use the bathroom and/or buy food. The concourses were beyond tight, was impossible to pass through. It really sounds like you got hit in the head with a few balls but you definitely need a few bats to the noggin

Played against the Twins
I was there with a friend that day. The Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 11-4. The Twins' Dan Ford hit the first HR, only one of the day.
How do you justify the desecration of the old stadium, then declare the new stadium was "not needed," when it so clearly was?
If you don’t think it was needed then you’re clueless. It would take innings to use the bathroom and/or buy food. The concourses were beyond tight, was impossible to pass through. It really sounds like you got hit in the head with a few balls but you definitely need a few bats to the noggin
