In the Kpop industry, idols are not allowed to swear, have tattoos, drink, smoke, date, etc.
It's bad for their image and reputation.
But BTS is BTS, they don't really need to please Kpop fans, since most of their fans are music lovers all over the world, they are not into Kpop but only BTS, and considering BTS aren't a Kpop band to begin with and not from and not supported by the Kpop industry, it's more or less not that weird anymore to see BTS smoking in their MV, swearing in their songs, live performances, etc.
Of course a lot of Kpop fans would attack them for being improper etc. cause they expect all idols to be perfect and flawless as possible, unfortunately for them, ARMY'S see BTS as imperfect yet admirable human beings and artist.
Besides true ARMY's don't really consider BTS as Kpop idols so it's quite understandable that the Kpop rules shouldn't apply to them.
Not all just jimin and jkook the others have just the 7 number ( group tatoo)

Jimin explained before that this album tells the story of different states of mind and emotion he went through during Pandemic and the sense of isolation that it caused, starting from "face off" , an aggressive song that expresses his anger of facing a new undesirable reality, an interlude which is an instrumental track expressing different emotions from his more vulnerable self through his daily life to his stage life as a performer. Then we have "Like crazy" which expresses a blissful dream like state of mind refusing to face a reality that keeps coming back to you and leaves you feeling more lonely, then we have "alone" which is almost a monologue of depressive thoughts , expressing loneliness and failed attempts to let go of them , and the album ends with "set me free" which is his determination to defeat those inner and outer conflicts and set himself free to begin a new journey, as he says :"put your hands up for the past me, and now set me free" Btw set me free is also a nod to his first solo song under BTS called "lie".

He has implied that he went into a state during the pandemic where he was using alcohol as a crutch for his emotions during lockdown and their sadness about the cancellation of their world tour etc. He is not asking to be set free from the band or the military. The band is his everything and his band mates are his brothers. The military is a sense of duty they all are proud to fulfill. He's talking about his mental state during the pandemic and wanting to be set free from the despair.

@@carolcrooks7018solutely, my daughter was in middle school when covid happened, she was more outgoing, didnt mind going places, after covid and things were getting back to normal, she didnt want to go anywhere, she even cried in a shoe store cause she thought her older cousin left her alone, she was 13, she got emotionally attached to everyone at home, even ask me not to go work, she started this thing where she just wants to hold your hand, now she is 15 and somewhat back to normal in high school, she still likes holding hands with people though and she is a cuddler type, wait is that weird?

Alcohol is a big part of Korean culture, in fact half of bts members are heavy drinkers (suga, JK, Jimin & Jin) and all of them have tattoos (7 to celebrate their friendship) JK and Jimin have a lot of tattoos, anyways, the song is about setting him free of himself and what other people think about him, he said that he wrote the song about the difficulties he went through around the pandemic time. I just want to say that the line “I won’t stop, even if they mock me” broke my heart when I’ve listened for the first time, Jimin is the member who gets the most hate and death threats in the group and I just don’t understand why he’s literally the most beautiful inside and out human being I’ve ever seen, it’s extremely disturbing the fact that exist MANY idols in this kpop industry that committed real CRIMES and don’t receive even 0,5% of hate he receives on daily basis…

I'm going to try to explain all the things you asked in this one message so it might be more helpful.
Military: All males know from day one that they are born, they have to go to the military by the time they are 28 yrs old. So his first day as a trainee for BTS he knew he had to go and right now this very second he knows he has to go. One thing BTS has made clear, especially when others were using their name for policy change about military service for idols, they understand their duty and will be doing it. Most males of course don't want to go because if they wanted to be in the military they would have joined but this song isn't asking to be set free from it.
His agency: He has a great relationship with his agency and BH's CEO Bang Si-Hyuk is like another father to them. They have seen enough of the agencies in SK and believe they have a good one. His agency never stopped him from making a solo album. Solo albums in BH have always been the same: you have to take control of it and do much of it yourself. The agency would of course provide resources and help with the logistics but most song creation, concept etc has to come from you or you choosing what songs from other writers to use. It's been like that from the first solo mixtapes the rappers made to the first official solo album Jack In the Box from JHope. BH has never stopped any of them from creating a solo album. The rappers just feel more attuned to it so they've done multiple but the vocalists were never discouraged. They tended to do more solo songs on soundcloud than the rappers or give songs to the group albums instead. So BH wasn't a hindrance, Jimin just didn't feel the time was right until now during their hiatus for service. Quick add: the groups isn't what he's talking about either. They all can't wait to be together again doing what they love.
Tattoos: The full chest tattoo was actually a quote from a German poem called "Ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen” by Rainer Maria Rilke. This translates to “I live my life in ever-widening circles that stretch themselves out over all the things. I won’t, perhaps, complete the last one, but I intend on trying. I circle around God, around the ancient tower, and I circle for thousands of years; and I don’t know, yet: am I a falcon, a storm, or a mighty song.” Jimin actually does have MULTIPLE tattoos on him. He has the words "Nevermind" on his right ribcage/lower chest which is from one of their songs called Nevermind from Suga. "Nevermind is written across your chest" it's a song of theirs that resonates with him. On the back of his biceps left and right are young and forever. Again another song that is important to BTS. He has the number 13 on his left wrist which is his birthdate and the date they debuted. He has the phases of the moon down his back. It started as one moon cycle I believe but increased to the full cycle when Taehyung (V) showed him an ARMY's painting of the phases of the moon. Last but definitely not least is the number 7 on his left pointer finger on the inside. They all made the decision to get the number 7 tattooed on themselves as a show of their commitment to each other and group.
What Set Me Free pt 2 means: I would suggest that you watch on the Bangtan TV channel Suga's show Suchwita with Jimin as a guest. Jimin and Suga talk about what the album and songs mean, the process behind making Jimin's album and Jimin's activities for the album. They also of course discuss their group and what they want when they are back together.
But here are some fast cliffnotes about the song.
-There is a Set Me Free pt 1 sorta. Suga has a song called that and Jimin called his part 2 because he felt he was discussing the same themes that Suga did in his song.
-This was written during the pandemic. Something you have to know about to help understand what was going on for most of them during that time is this: BTS was going to go on their biggest tour EVER. They were going to hit places they hadn't toured before. This tour was probably going to be almost a year long. They had art instillations going and performance pieces around the world to talk about the globe and how we are all one. The project was called CONNECT BTS. It was about world art, dance, sculpture, music etc. After they did all of this they were going to announce that they were talking time off and they were all entering the military together at that time. All of this was gutted due to the pandemic. So what Jimin was referring to was set him free from the pandemic, the anger of basically losing his livelihood, fear of can they come back from this, insecurity of will the fans go away, being alone because you couldn't see family or friends, depression from all of the other things plaguing him. This is why you got many answers and vague answers because it was many things and feelings that made up the song.

I think the important thing to remember is that even when they are doing solo work, they still consider themselves BTS. So Suga had a song on his solo mix tape D-2 called Set Me Free, which means Jimin’s Set Me Free is part 2. This is part of what sets them apart from other groups. They support each other in all ways. The members brought RM food when he was shooting a video for his first solo mixtape. Suga when to support Jimin during his video shoot. JImin was at J-Hope’s Lallapalooza concert. J-Hope was at Suga’s video shoot for Amygdala.
V, Jimin and JK were at Suga’s D-day concert in Seoul. I’m pretty sure Jimin was with JK during his US promotions for “Seven.” They are amazing as solos but they are always BTS.

Pt 1 Jimin referenced Suga’s song. This song relates to his time during Covid. He wanted to free himself from how he was feeling - past tense. Most K-pop groups do have regulations but BigHit and Bang PD never restricted them as much as other companies. The tattoos are fake and it is a German poem. He does have several tattoos. His album is his pandemic story. So if you listen to it from start to finish he goes through the tracks feeling angry, frustrated, crazy and then accepting and thankful. Listening to it in order, then it really makes more sense.
Jimin would never say he wants to break free to do solo work. They all love being in the group but Jimin would definitely be number 1 when it comes to loving BTS. In fact all the members have always had the freedom to work on solo projects while being in the group, so creatively, they do have that outlet.💜

In the entire 10 years of BTS existence and journey, Jimin is one of the member who attracted a lot of haters. Haters who criticized his performance, his appearance, anything he does. This song is a slap to those haters. He now has set himself free from those negativity brought about by these haters, knowing the hard work and eventually his achievement and accolades he has received
All the members had very hard times during the pandemic. Dealing with depression, anxiety and feeling loney.
Jimin talks and tried to overcome it through this song (and his whole album). And he did. He`s fine now. And the song also adresses his haters. fxxx off.

Jimin said the songs in his album express his feelings during the pandemic when their World Tour was halted and there was so much uncertainty as to when the pandemic would end. Jimin loves to perform at concerts and I think it hit him hard not knowing if and when they would be able to do it.

Part 1 is from another BTS album by Suga (aka Agust D) Part 2 is about Jimin's personal inner fight of the mind those inner voices that were bringing him down due to covid. He admits he was also drinking. Jimin's whole album Face is about him going through the Covid period. He's talked about it freely.

According to Jimin, the song could be interpreted in different ways. It came about during isolation during Covid when he found himself depressed and drinking way too often, and it shook him a little. Also, if you listen to the tracks of his solo album 'Face' in order, they tell a story. This song is the culmination of that story... freeing himself from what was holding him back. That's my understanding. 💜

Some of BTS are heavy drinkers and even do V lives with fans drunk (especially JK). Korea has a strong drinking culture. Suga said on jimmy fallon that the band takes a shot of whiskey before every show. Suga also offered free alcohol to to fans at his recent concert tour. The tattoos on his chest is a german poem called widening circles that goes with the theme. There is an interesting explanation video on bookish theories about this song that includes the fact that the set is designed like the perfect prison, the panopticon, which jimin also mentioned in the making of the video clip, where the cells are around the perimeter of the circular structure guarded by a tower in the middle where the guards can see perfectly into each prison cell. Jimin represents the tower in the center as well as being trapped in a cell. So he is the one beating himself down, the guard and the prisoner. the song is about his battle with depression and mental health over personal situations he went through during the pandemic. So the song is about wanting to be set free from his mind. Jimin called the song set me free pt 2 because suga has a song called set me free and this song is a similar theme to that song. Also, jimin has tattoos of all the moon phases down his spine that was inspired by fan art. He also has nevermind tattooed under his rib in reference to one of suga's song lyrics. JK has a full sleeve of tattoos and multiple piercings, all the band members got a friend's tattoo in 2022 of the number 7 to represent the number of members in the band. Jimin in an interview mentioned he took all of his feelings through the 2 yrs of the pandemic - starting from the initial feeling of emptiness & loneliness and lost himself along the way. Then realizing what he was doing to himself, realizing he should overcome all these feelings. The album is great, he suggests to listen to it in chronological order to understand what he was going through. His band mates encouraged him to put his feelings down into his lyrics. This was different than what we’re used to from Jimin but his performances are always unique & captivating so also not a surprise on his artistry in terms of his 1st solo album.

He made this song doing the pandemic and he was having a really hard time doing that time and his Face album is about him doing the pandemic and how he felt and tried to deal with it. And at that time he drank to try to deal with how he was feeling. The other members was by his side and did what they could to help him. All members struggled doing the pandemic like most of the world did. You are right about the fact that in the k-pop industry it not allowed to drink and specially not in the first years of their career because they need to work and be focused but when BTS became as big as they are they can drink alcohol as long as they do it in a healthy way and the only videos and pictures there is of them drinking is when they are alone/in group, at private partys or events or when celebrating with the team and staff. The still behave really nice and i think as long as they still behave nicely and working hard the staff dont mind. They are adults and i think as they have gotten bigger as artists they have also gotten more freedom to do things in their private life. :)

You'll find "part 1" on Suga/Agust D's second mixtape D-2. The songs aren't directly related but they noticed a lot of coincidental similarities between the two in terms of wording and message so Jimin decided to acknowledge that/pay homage to it by calling his song "part 2".
While you're totally right about strict rules in the industry and BTS definitely do have rules they have to follow, they've always had more freedom (or possibly just less consequences? 😂) than most groups. I mean, we've seen them get drunk on several occasions, both official and unofficial ones.
Their tattoos are definitely in that same category. It's still generally frowned upon in South Korea, although it is slowly changing, and they still have to cover them with tape and bandages when performing on national TV.
But yeah, they've always had that rebellious streak in them: Debuting with a song against mindless studying, riskily commenting on political issues, swearing in quite a few of their songs and having them banned from national media, getting tattoos, not following company rules (Jin is in a category of his own on that one believe it or not; we call it Jin Hit Entertainment whenever he goes against Big Hit's rules. 😂), name dropping brands they don't get paid to endorse, etc., etc...
Last but not least they truly love each other like brothers and very much support each others' solo careers that they have had a lot of freedom to develop while simultaneously being a part of the group; again something that hasn't been afforded to most other Kpop artists.

Well, Jin had made "Alcohol journey -serie" making traditional Korean alcohol. Sugas "Suchwita" show includes visitors brings drinking with them... you should watch "Suchwita" with BTS members, there is lots of information their thoughts of past, present and future..
Jimin has several tattoos, he was actually the first to get one.
He has NEVER MIND on his right rib, it is the title of Suga's INTRO song in their album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 2, to quote the lyrics: "If you can't return, go straight through your mistakes and forget them all. *NEVER MIND, it's not easy but engrave it onto your chest* . If you feel like you're going to crash then accelerate more." So, Jimin did just that and got it inked onto his chest.
He has "13" on the inside of his left wrist, i imagine it stands for his birthday and BTS' debut date.
He has each word of "Young Forever" tattooed on the back of his arms, just above his elbows.
He has "Youth" behind his left ear.

And lastly the "7" all of BTS share, Jimin has his inside of his index finger.

Jimin is a very sensitive artist. In writing Lyrics, he is obviously influenced by hid elder BTS brothers Suga's prowess in the use of words and RM in his prowess in the use of metaphors. Jimin loves to express his innermost thoughts in his songs. Whether or not he wrote it, he would inject the same in his vocal expression or dance reportoire. And, BTS is known for their effective expression of the emotion of their respective parts in their song. But, Jimin loves to personifies his innermost thoughts in his solo songs.
In BTS' masterpiece "Lie" as co-written and sung by Jimin (his first solo song) , Jimin spoke to himself and personified his struggle between his fear and own conviction. Jimin, being the perfectionist himself, had this weird thoughts stock in his head that his talent is not enough and, at the same time, there is another part of him that tells him that he is capable of giving more as he is the most giving among the 7 of them even on stage he is a selfless artist according to RM..Being a perfectionist, Jimin used to be obsessed with precision and perfection and, for a slight mistake, he would hate himself so much and it takes a longer period of time to move on. And, this struggle made him doubt his talent and even lie to himself that he is not good enough.
In his Serendipity (although RM co-wrote the lyrics), Jimin was actually talking to himself, who was struggling between loving or hating himself. In the end he chose love because he chose to be happy. Being happy does not come by chance or serendipity instead it comes by loving oneself. To love oneself, Jimin showed in this song that he started it by taking a better look on himself.
In Filter, he is talking to his ownself. He is telling his ownself that I can do whatever his ownself wants him to do. This is actually a self-uplifting song where Jimin is assuring himself that he can be whatever he wants. He can be the filter of his own without losing the real Jimin inside him.
In this song Set Me Free, we find, at the first glance on lyrics, that Jimin is challenging his haters. He is actually challenging the noise inside his head which tells himself that he cannot do it by himself. This a song depicts the struggle of the inner thoughts which, if not addressed may lead to failure and despair. So that, Jimin is finally setting himself free from these negative thoughs and putting himself up to the challenge. In this Song, we see the brave and challenged Jimin.

Jimin has always had issues with self doubt and perfectionism. He also has gotten some of the most serious hate from haters for a multitude of reasons. They call him names and criticize everything about the man. During the pandemic he probably had more time to think and that was not the best thing for him. He started to drink heavily (alcohol is permitted in Kpop but drugs are not). This is him breaking free form his own self doubt and developing the confidence to tell his haters to fuck off. 💜

Jimin did an album review on live and even then I feel like he wasn’t rlly open and clear about what the songs meant. Aside from him struggling during the pandemic there might be other personal things that he just doesn’t wanna go too in depth about. BTS drink even on Camera they are not under the same rules as most of Kpop Idols. They even have tattoo's not something Kpop artists are supposed to have and it's still looked down upon in South Korea if you have tattoo's. In fact every member of BTS has at least one tattoo as they have a 'Friendship tattoo' the number 7.

This song has a part 1 but does not actually have any correlation with the song but BTS just does part 2's in their songs. Set me free part 2 actually is him breaking free from all the hardships that he had experience during pandemic and him not minding criticisms as he being one of the members who has a large following also has most haters. So this song I think is also a subtle shout out to this people. If you listen to his whole album you'll understand as it is arrange cohesively. So his album "Face" is consist of Face off, Interlude, Like Crazy, Alone and Set Me Free part 2.
Actually all of them had number 7 friendship tattoos, but Jimin and Jungkook has them way back, but because K pop is conservative regarding this things so when they are doing live performances they cover this with bandages so it will not be visible on TV.

@4:09 What other countries don't realize is that technically North &South Korea are still at war. There was no peace treaty. Basically they just got tired of fighting. But North Korea train their men for no less than 10 years. So South Korea can't afford to not train either. They need a readily available military because the North can pop off at anytime. It's unfortunate but necessary.
The U.S. has a larger population and more men willing to volunteer; but still every male in the U.S. has to register with selective services and be ready if called to serve if we were to experience the same.

You're not wrong about the restrictions of kpop companies, although most idols are usually able to do all those things as they "earn" a place in the company. But this song is more about the freedom of being yourself. In a largely visual industry, Jimin has been attacked from the start over things like his weight, his looks, or his decisions.
This song is about the freedom of finally letting what other people said not matter to him. He just loves making music and he loves back the fans who love him and value what he does and who he is.

Calling the song "Set Me Free, Part 2" is just an homage to Suga's song "D-2" in his second Augst D mixtape. Jimin said inn his conversation with Suga on Suchwita (which you should watch on TH-cam and which is about drinking with Suga while being interviewed by him!) that it was simply his way of acknowledging his love for that song. Or something like that! I know it doesn't make sense to US, but it obviously does to him! He also has said that the song is about his own personal emancipation from negative feelings and low self esteem. As for the drinking...well...BTS is beyond that teen-age K-Pop stuff. I really love this song. It feels dramatic, haunting yet also powerful with the brass instruments and the chant. There is so much going on in this song and music video both very beautifully executed. Very theatrical also with the sound, dance, use of auto tune and singing voice to express different mental thoughts and use of light and shadows. If you want to see the storytelling in the dance more clearly, i would highly recommend the dance practice video even to watch on your own time. Jimin is not a wordy person and seem to be a bit mysterious to the public. He wont give you the full answer you want to know and only say just enough and leave it to fans interpretation and connection to do the break down which is why i enjoy watching reactions for different point of views and learn something new. Jimin suffered a lot during the covid lockdown. Before covid they had been preparing for a huge tour which had to be cancelled. Jimin loves to be on stage, it is his life. He was very depressed. I believe the whole album is based on his experiences of that time.

In South Korea every male between a certain age have required military enlistment for 18 months, and it is considered a great honor to fulfill this service.. His moon tattoos are real, there are different phases of the moon down his back and he does have other tats as well.. They all have the 7 friendship tattoo and JK has a full sleeve which he just had retouched
