This was so much fun to pull together! Is your favourite modern puzzle game in this list? If so or if not, let us know down there in the comments. Cheers!
No Talos Principle or Stephen’s Sausage Roll? Both are masterclasses in using mechanics to their fullest potential and are a lot more genius than most on this list I’d say. Baba is you, The Witness, and Obra Dinn are on par with them though.
@@GetIndieGaming Aw, not a fan? I can't fault anyone for not getting into it because the difficulty curve is pretty punishing, but if you loved Baba is You, I think it deserves another shot. It really gets going in the 3rd and 4th areas and the later levels are the some of the most clever puzzles I've ever seen in a video game. Even though the game gets progressively harder, it actually gets easier to play. Once you've mastered the basics, then you can just focus on the concepts and ideas and it's a lot less frustrating.
The Talos Principle-and its sequel, Road to Gehenna-and Patrick's Parabox would be my top picks. Two other really good 3D platforming logic puzzles are The Last Cube and Lumote: The Mastermote Chronicles. Kine is very clever and charming and Death Squared is also good. Five great point-and-clicks are Machinarium, Candle, Tohu, and Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise, and the very original and enjoyable Strange Horticulture. If you like The Pedestrian, then you should check out 7th Sector. Filament is good if you like maze puzzles similar in underlying structure (but different in presentation) to those in The Witness. If you like Opus Magnum or other Zachtronics games, then you should check out Human Resource Machine.
BRUHHHHH, you just made my day. I am looking for new games. Been loving puzzles since the original Myst. But most of the titles youve mentioned I dont know them. Meaning : I've come across a treasure chest!! ty
The best Indie game EVER MADE?! Wow, that's quite a bold statement. Especially for a game that doesn't even have game graphics in it. I'll have to check it out, but I don't imagine I'd rank it nearly as high.
Soft spot for Monument Valley. The Esther-like art is so immersive with the art style. Normally puzzle games feel frustrating but that immersion is enjoyable to look at too.
Wow, this is a great list! I might disagree about where I'd put some of these games, but I think that's down to taste more than anything. That and I enjoyed Telling Lies from Sam Barlow more than Immortality. That being said, the fact that this list could introduce you laterally to other great puzzle games is a mark of quality!
If you like Portal, check out Superliminal. The puzzles in this game are all about perspective. For example, you pick up a small stair and place it back from further away so it gets bigger, so you can reach a high place. It's also in the Game Pass and has a similar length as the first Portal.
The Talos Principle is really good as well. Although a bit older by now the puzzles and especially the philosophical questions throughout are really good!
Thank you for this list. Where I've already enjoyed quite a few of these games, with "beating" Opus Magnum being one of my proudest puzzle achievements, it is nice to see an actual list of puzzler games instead of the horrendous lists you find from googling or even hunting through Steam. Puzzle games are more than just action games with a crate pushing minigame, and the best are some of the greatest games I've ever played. I appreciate you giving them their due.
I've played Gorogoa, Return of the Obra Dinn and Gardens Between! All solid games with fantastic art styles. I recommend Tangle Tower as well - great art, voice acting, puzzles and story!
You have a soothing voice. Ive listened to your content for 3 years now. You have helped me find lots of amazing games. I appreciate you and your content.
Great list! Has almost all games on it I thought of when thinking of the best puzzle games I've played. Only ones missing for my taste are Outer Wilds, The Sexy Brutale, Braid, and Strange Horticulture.
Talos Principle like everyone said, SSR as well. Also Recursed, Syzygy, Toki Tori 2+, Blocks That Matter & Tetrobot and Co... to name a few that quickly came to mind.
Some say Zachtronics games like Opus Magnum are actually a quite different genre (e.g. Problem solving), because they are so open ended, wheras most puzzles basically are a complete thing, the developer broke apart, and the player has to rediscover - you know, like the classic table top picture puzzling. But Zachtronics offer a similar mental challenge, without having to guess what the devs was thinking, but just following the worlds rule.
Maybe this list could have been split into traditional puzzlers and experimental puzzlers wherein traditional puzzlers would be any where you can hypothetically split the game into level or puzzles to be solved Eg traditional - baba is you, portal, gorogoa, monument valley, braid, unpacking, witness Eg experimental - papers please, obra dinn, immortality
I would have loved to have seen Legend of Grimrock 2 on this list. It's a revival of the old school dungeon crawler genre, and every door, every bridge you cross, every stairway to the next level is likely to require a puzzle or two to access, sometimes 3 or 5. When I was a kid, it was the dungeon crawler games like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, and Lands of Lore that served as my gateway to RPGs because they were a hybrid of RPG and puzzle game. Legend of Grimrock 2 is one of the more beautiful games I've ever seen, yet still manages to stick to the old-school grid-based movement and packs in puzzles blocking your progress left and right. Some are easy, go kill this monster and it'll drop a key and you can progress; hardly even worthy of being called a puzzle. Other's however can really stump the heck out of you. A teleporter on the other side of a pit, it's only on when you stand on a pressure plate, you don't have a clean shot to throw something into the teleporter in order to flip the switch on the other side to close the pit so you can progress. What do you do? A room full of trap doors, every step you take opens or closes other trap doors around you. You need to get from point A to point B, but how do you get there without falling through a trap door? Some are very easy, put an object in an alcove and it opens the door, but you have to solve the riddle written on the wall to know what to put in the alcove: "I am all. I am none." (The answer is a mirror.) "Hard as rock. Blue as sky. Twinkles in a woman's eye." (Sapphire) An empty room except for 6 switches, find the right combination, and you can progress. Easy, straight forward, but man that combination requires 8 inputs and finding the right combination requires you to pay attention to the number of turns taken in the long, mazelike hallway that got you into the room, and that hint is a crazy riddle. If you're a puzzle game fan, and you like RPGs, try the Grimrock games. They're not easy, but man they're good, especially the 2nd one.
Hello. We're back from Wednesday the 31st of January. We had hoped to get our GOTY list out late last year although our narrator had COVID and has only got their voice back in the last few days.
Alright alright! I'll play Garagoa already. Your relentless campaign has worn me down!! Great list, was tricky to find games that are pure puzzlers since so many are cross genre. Glad you enjoyed Magnus Opum, the most infuriating and humbling game I've ever played.
You convinced me to download Immortality even though I didn't last 10 minutes with Telling Lies and generally dislike narrative in games. Fingers crossed!
I'm glad many people here mentioned The Talos Principle, it's my number 1. I also enjoyed Talos 2 quite a lot, although it's pretty different than the first. I had never heard of Immortality before, now I'm curious.. although it's seems to be a horror game and I'm a chicken for jumpscares, so I'm not sure I'll give it a try. Anyway, it reminded me of Contradiction: Spot the Liar. I found it quite enjoyable!
Oh my god, Opus Mangum is crazy engaging, never before has a game made me want to be the absolute best I can be at it. It’s like speedrunning, but it tests your ingenuity instead of your precision and reactions. Thanks for turning me on to it :)
Had a great time with The Witness and am trying to get through Babu is You. Quite difficult for me. I played the demo for Bonfire Peaks and enjoyed it. Reminds me of Stephen's Sausage Roll by Increpare who also did English Country Tune.
Wow, this is incredibly concise, thanks for keeping this, so well cataloged! I’ve been following the channel for years, thank you for all the great game recommendations!
Great list :), only ones I hadn't heard of were The Gardens Between and Opus Magnum, and both look like my thing and they were on sale on Steam, so I snapped them up, thanks for the recommendation :) The idea of playing around with perspective, either visually or mentally, is super appealing to me, so Goragoa, Baba Is You and especially The Witness are all top contenders for me. Only real difference I would have in my list, excluding the two mentioned before I haven't played, is I would have The Talos Principle somewhere near the top, I adore that style of puzzles as well as the high concept story.
Love and agree with the inclusions of The Unfinished Swan and The Witness. Not sure Portal makes my list, but it is certainly influential and iconic. Even Inside's inclusion feels somewhat questionable since I don't feel like it was puzzle focused but more atmospherically driven.
The dioramas in The Garden's Between are mindblowing in their inventiveness, esp in the later levels. I tend to get bored quickly but I wanted to see everything in this game. I loved them so much and love to show them to others as well.
Sexy Brutale!! I don't know yet if it's on this list but it's amazing! It's so unique in it's style and atmosphere. I played it years ago and it is one of the few games that really made an impression and I actually played through bc it was intriguing until the very end. It's a kind of detective game I'd say but very different from "conventional" detective games. It also has some surreal elements which I love.
These are all great games, I know them all. I'd love a list (even a mich shorter one) of maybe much more obscure puzzle games that are still interesting in some way.

Very very late but i reccomend Hob made by Runic. Its really confusing because of the world building and even though it cost like 3 Dollars, its pretty much worth it.

The Talos Principle is a fantastic puzzle game and one of my favorite games ever
No idea how I left this one off the list. I hang my head in shame.
@@GetIndieGaming and TP2 is even better. A truly masterpiece.
The best Indie game EVER MADE?! Wow, that's quite a bold statement. Especially for a game that doesn't even have game graphics in it. I'll have to check it out, but I don't imagine I'd rank it nearly as high.
my favorite puzzle game is :
Antichamber
Patrick's Parabox should be there. It is ingenious little game about moving boxes with a brilliant twist.
This is the best puzzle game I’ve played since portal. I’m on my second play through and will be giving it to my kids to teach them how to think.
Creaks is a really good puzzle game as well. Love the artstyle.
Soft spot for Monument Valley. The Esther-like art is so immersive with the art style. Normally puzzle games feel frustrating but that immersion is enjoyable to look at too.
This year's Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is stunning as well.

How the heck is the Talos principle not on this damn list
So glad to see you posting regularly again. Your content is awesome, dude.
I appreciate that, thank you.
Can't believe you don't include the Talos Principle. This can also be play in VR making it an even more amazing experience
The Talos Principle is really good as well. Although a bit older by now the puzzles and especially the philosophical questions throughout are really good!
My favorite puzzle game ❤
Definitely my top 3 as well
Yup, I was thinking the same thing. Brilliant puzzle game and one of my favorites.
I the Room series should be on this list. Always a pleasure when there's a new one out.
Oh thats another really good call. Thank you.
Amazing List. Greatest puzzlers ever. Here are a few more to add : Braid, Limbo, Inside, Unravel, Machinarium, The swapper, Her Story.
The swapper; few people mention that! Not the greatest puzzle ever, but very challenging from what I recall
If it was top 22 I would have added 6 of those 7, and swapped Unravel for Fez.
Thank you for this list. Tangle Tower was one of my favourite games
You have a soothing voice. Ive listened to your content for 3 years now. You have helped me find lots of amazing games. I appreciate you and your content.
I feel like Outer Wilds could fit on this list as well. Adventure / puzzle / mystery
Another awesome suggestion. Many thanks. I should have done a top 20 rundown.
@@GetIndieGaming thanks for the awesome list. I hadn't even heard of your #1, so I'm definitely picking that one up.
Immortality is one of the best game i have ever played! Its brillant.
I reccomend Crown Jewelz
I would very much recommend “A Monster’s Expedition”
Immortality as the best indie game ever made is a bold statement!
Great list! Has almost all games on it I thought of when thinking of the best puzzle games I've played. Only ones missing for my taste are Outer Wilds, The Sexy Brutale, Braid, and Strange Horticulture.
I think Timelie also should be on that list. You should defenitely check this one if you haven't played it yet.

Talos Principle like everyone said, SSR as well. Also Recursed, Syzygy, Toki Tori 2+, Blocks That Matter & Tetrobot and Co... to name a few that quickly came to mind.

I forgot all about "The Garden Between." I heard that game emotionally wrecks you. I'm all for it
La mulana 1 & 2 Hidden Treasure Edition . These two games are amazing with hard puzzles to solve and not for players with less patience.
"We think you love to" this is one of the most important communications logic in human society.
The Talos Principle and Relicta are also incredible games. Talos is #1 for me. Well behind portal which will never be matched.
Surprised braid isn’t featured, and the witness isn’t higher up. As mentioned, talos principle was amazing.
"Taiji" is severely missing from here. Go play it everyone!
I've played pretty much all of these great games. Mostly because they were recommended to me by this great channel to begin with.
Casual “Best indie game ever made” drop there at the end.

Stephen's Sausage Roll was another omission from this rundown. It sits in my library mocking me for leaving it out.
I love these genre overview lists. Especially in the indi space, even with niche genres, you could fill many many lists.
Railbound and "Please fix the road" are worth checking out
There has to be room for Fez !! .. great list though and a couple i hadn't heard of, so thanks!
There is a time stamp missing for #12: Gorogoa
Duly fixed. Thanking you.
No Outer Wilds ?
Also, I think Annapurna Interactive deserves some recognition for the prominence in the list haha
Fair.

Love your videos
This list of full of gems. I will make sure to check the ones I don't know
INSIDE! Amazing game. On sale on Steam AUS at the moment. $2.99! Best couple of bucks I have ever spent
That is more platformer and horror than puzzle tbh
Sexy Brutale!! I don't know yet if it's on this list but it's amazing! It's so unique in it's style and atmosphere. I played it years ago and it is one of the few games that really made an impression and I actually played through bc it was intriguing until the very end. Disappointed The Talos Principle isn't even in the list, given that it could easily top it.
Opus magnum looks nuts

The Almost Gone & Roki are some amazing point & click games, check them out!

Either of Tetris 99 or Tetris Effect Connected are necessary.
I'll try I am Dead again then. I kind of couldn't really get into it, it felt unintuitive to control, I felt lost and didn't really get what to look for inside objects but this made me curious to try again. Maybe the controls on the switch are to blame? Idk
I really enjoyed The Talos Principle
