This was a real joy to pull together. I played 20 or so games before settling on this list that’s full of joy and nostalgia. Is your favourite pixel art game in the list? Did I miss anything you think should be here? Feel free to let me know down here in the comments. Cheers all!
Honestly for this category i would've focused on the quality of the pixel art. Vampire survivor makes no sense here imo. To each their own. A game i personally would've put in there is Owlboy
Not that I disagree with any of your options, but a few that I'd also mention from the top of my head: Papers, Please / FEZ / Blackwell series / Eversion
One game worth to mention is Hyper Light Drifter. For me it's one of the best fast paced action adventure RPG I've ever played. It was one of the first games I've played when I built my gaming Pc, so it holds a special place in my heart ♥️
Hld is so good. Buttery smooth and fun combat, immersive exploration and sense of discovery, awesome soundtrack, and just hands down the most unique aesthetic I’ve ever seen. It’s responsible for getting me into pixel art and has yet to be topped. Last night or Replaced might be able to do it though.
I made it to the top in celeste a few days ago, it was an incredible experience. I feel I can take on anything now, after overcoming so many times what felt impossible
Your voice tone and cadence are soothing like Stardew Valley's OST, not to mention the passionate and poetic words you use to describe things you so clearly love... Sounds like ASMR with content, with a soul... Speaking of which, I should try to rewatch some videos someday and see how fast I can fall asleep to it hahaha Thanks again for the video!
If you guys enjoy pixel art just go and play Eastward. No regrets, I swear. Incredible character development and personality, sublime OST, the graphics and stage details/lightning are just mesmerizing to look at, fun battle system + puzzles. I just felt sad after it ended, because it's a beautiful experience.
I love the way bonfire peaks looks. I go back and forth playing Eastward and other games, but I'm really enjoying Eastward. I bought Celeste last year but haven't tried it yet. I've heard it's not easy, but is enjoyable.
Eastward was a delight. The characters, art design, gameplay, and music were better than I was expecting. The story and pacing really slowed down in the middle and I lost interest, but hoping to return to finish some day! A Short Hike, though. That gave me feels I didn't even know I had. Fantastic game. Great list!
Coming back out with hits after hits! I would add "The Messenger" to the list. It was such a delight with just enough nostalgia to pull us in with the add of new mechanics and visual twists that I haven't seen in other games.
Seriously getting sick of owlboy not getting th love or praise it deserves. Just as good as undertale, if not better, and the art style is amazing. Nobody checks out games that arent super popular though
I had a lot of trouble with Phoenotopia's controls. They feel like they're fighting against what the game is asking you to do much of the time. I'll give it another go sooner or later because it's really comfy and otherwise seems great. I just couldn't get past the controls and how they felt.
I was away from gaming for some time and now that I'm back it feels amazing to have not one, but several new videos to watch, lol. So good to have you back.
I played Harvest Moon on Gameboy when I was a kid and Stardew valley brought me right back to that. Played 30 hours in two days and had to put it down. So relaxing.
Bro! Review of pixel games originating from Indonesia. Namely a space for the unbound ( asftu). If I'm not mistaken, the plot has the theme of Indonesia in the 1900s. And also won the Japanese International Awards . Please you review it, because happy a first but sad ending T-T
I would have to say that Heroes of Hammerwatch is my favourite pixel art game. It is way, way too grindy, but the gameplay is very solid and I like the way that the different classes that you play have buffs that are account wide. Similar to the Badass Rank in Borderlands 2, only the stat boosted is predetermined by which class you are playing.
Why I haven't come across your page sooner astounds me! This is exactly what I'm looking for in a gaming channel. Nice work ! Now gonna go binge all of your videos.....
I´m really glad I´ve played them all, except for Bonefire Peaks, so onto the wishlist, I guess. (but si that and a Short Hike pixel art, tho?). I would´ve been more inclined giving it to Blasphemous or Hyper Light Drifter.
One thing I absolutely love about these videos is when people also comment about games they adore and i get to look up and possibly add soo many new games to my wishlist.
I've gotten every achievement in Katana ZERO but have never once seen that place where you get the shield around you and deflect bullets. Was that a secret room? What am I missing?
RAIN WORLD!!!! Ah damn! How could I forget that exceptional game. Ah that will bother me for ages. I'm going to have to play it this evening. Thank you.
So glad you included Bonfire Peaks in this list. It’s a truly wonderful - and utterly beautiful - head scratching puzzler. Vampire Survivors came out of nowhere for me too. I’ve since dumped around 30hrs into it on Xbox, and I’m rather looking forward to the upcoming Switch version. For me though, and narrowly holding out the likes of Celeste, Cuphead, Death’s Door and Hades, I have to say that Dead Cells is still my favourite indie game ever made. In fact, I’ve put more than 130hrs into it on Switch and, having recently gone back to it on my PS5, I’m currently just two trophies away from getting the Platinum trophy on the PS4 version. Oh and by the way, it’s great to see you back posting videos, buddy!
A great, visually pleasing pixel art game I love is Narita Boy. It's an amazing 80's style pixel art game that is the most visually beautiful game I have ever played. It is definitely not for everyone but I love it!
Everyone who loves Celeste should check out Towerfall. It was their first game and could be described as Celeste meets super smash bros meets pac man, but with bow and arrows. It’s utter madness and so fun to play with friends.
I love celeste, so satisfying, amazing story. It's one that I like to play through a couple of times a year. Does art of rally count as pixel art? That game was so underrated, top notch physics, beautiful visuals, lovely nods to rally of yesteryear, amazing soundtrack, definitely worth playing for racing game fans
Art of Rally is utterly superb. It's one of those games where you can get into a flow while playing and everything feels magical as you pull off those drifts and jumps. A wonderful gem of a game. If you haven't seen it, perhaps take a look at Circuit Superstars with it taking me all the way back to the likes of Micro Machines. Here's a link: www.circuit-superstars.com/
@@GetIndieGaming that looks amazing, might just pick it up. I played micromachines on the NES way back when on that crazy codemaster cartridge. The campaign was great but I had the most fun on VS with my sister, baiting her into turns on the F1 car billiard table level on the long straights on the edge of the table, fun times!
I've been playing The Messenger to get prepared for Sea of Stars in August, and it's great joy. Other games worth mentioning imo: Fez, The End is Nigh, and Crosscode.
Aside from vampire survivor (I’ve never played it) this whole list is easy to agree with. These are all bangers. If some one twisted my arm to put one more I’d probably put Undermine on my list. Out of the piles upon piles of rogue likes that and Dead Cells have always hovered above the rest. Great video brother. I know I’ve already said it but it’s good to have you back. I missed that soothing voice
For a game released in 2023, I have to give Norco a mention. Man, that is some of the most breathtaking pixel art I've seen. I don't know how these artists keep doing it. For all time, Blasphemous, Hyper Light Drifter, and The Last Door top my list, and Cloudpunk gets a definite mention for most surprising: I was shocked how effective the voxels were at creating a better and more immersive cyber-punk environment than most AAA games in similar settings.
i find it uncanny that the video lauds Shovel Knight for how tight its controls are because that's precisely why I put it down after a bit under 2 hours. If it handled like *Hollow* Knight, I'd probably have loved it, but the character felt uncomfortable to start and stop, and the frontal attack has virtually no range, forcing you to downstrike everything.
It's a tough list to crack - my honorable mentions would be Blasphemous, Graveyard keeper (is that pixel?), Unmetal, Moonlighter, Valfaris, starbound and 198X. My absolute favourite however, from gameplay, story and the amazing ripper soundtrack that brought Synthwave forward in games was Hotline Miami

Bonfire Peaks looks cool👍🏻 ...and A Short Hike 🎮is becoming a Legend, there's also a GDC Game Dev Talk in which the developers explain all the considerations and techniques they used.
I don't think a short hike uses a voxel engine, but polygons. In the menu, you can increase the resolution a lot against the recommendation of the dev, and then it becomes even more obvious.
Was there another version or update to Katana Zero? I ask, because the powers that were displayed in your review (being able to catch and redirect bullets) is not in the version I played. Perhaps it's a mod?
