- Former prime minister Rishi Sunak accused the government of "fiddling the figures" and of "not being straight with the British people".
Delivering the Conservative Party's formal response to Labour's budget, it was Mr Sunak's last act as interim leader of the Conservatives.
"Time and again we Conservatives warned that Labour would tax, borrow and spend far beyond what they were telling the country, and time and again they denied they had such plans," he said.
"But today, the truth has come out."

If he delayed the election he would of won it the economy was growing slowly and inflation was coming down
labour and tories are part of the same clique; he called the election early to ward off their common enemy; Nigel Farage. It was pretty effective because they caught him off guard.
He had to at some point within the next few months. Wouldn't have made a difference, they would have lost the election whenever they held it.
He had no choice. There legally had to be one before January 2025 and he'd lost the confidence of his party so it was either call an election or get voted out of party leadership.

The new tax rate, the new standard wage, and the prisons, and what is next we will find out.
We have seen some meetings with Ukraine, we have seen some meetings with Aukus,
but we haven't seen a strong stance projecting outwards onto the world.
They can raise the min wage all they want, it's not them paying it!, a company will only recruit staff by what they can afford, raise Ni for employers will only ever affect the workers.

@@markhitchcock4704 yeah but the under 30s will not know how they will just see it as a benefit, i worked 10 years ago for 6.50 an hour on a zero hour contract, so on paper it sounds huge. I came out from 5 days work back then with like 120 pound, 10 year ago.
and when i went self employed i charged 15.
Now 15 is too little i was inexperienced.

The International Markets seem to have accepted the increased borrowing from the Reeves Budget, which is more than can be said for the Truss fiasco of a few years ago. Perhaps we should see what will be the outcome before making judgment, though I suspect that some small businesses may be hit as well as us poorer pensioners on the old rate.

Great budget . Well done Rachel Reeves. Tax are not rising for working people, they are rising for big buisnesses; energy firms , people who fly private jets, non doms being banned and those big energy firms who are making billions in profits whilst our energy bills go up. It is a bold radical policy shifting the burden to people with broader shoulder to pay for the years of under investment in our nhs schools and public services . The austerity and the 22 billion pound black hole she inherited from the tories. It is great what she did . Best budget in a long time. We got no growth under the tories austerity plan and this labour government is being bold and responsible. Bringing in 40billion in tax to pay for our public services . They are not raising income tax VAT or national insurance for working people ,so they are 100% keeping there promises. And she is increasing minium wage for people. A working people's budget thats what todays budget is . No wonder tories hate it with hedge fund and side buisnesses they have asking them to pay more including people with second homes and investment and shares through increasing capital gains tax. Amazing and the right budget. Winner is the nhs getting billions and working people. Lovers from this budget are big profiteering buisness ; non doms, private schools, private jets flyers.
