Sadly you are in the minority. The wagon accounts for 30% of Mazda 6 sales - that's less than 200 units so far this year, against nearly 8000 CX-5s. Such a pity as this a really good looking car and lovely to drive.
The vast majority don’t want a low riding long vehicle, the sales of the CX5 are orders of magnitude higher. I really like the 6, unfortunately these days it’s a niche offering that is unlikely to be replaced due to poor sales.
I actually know a lot of people who prefer wagons as a family car that handles better, costs less to purchase and run, is safer and looks better than SUVs. But alas, the smart value conscious buyers usually buy second hand cars and therefore the market is controlled by the others.
Hi all. From a Mazda 3 skyactiv x owner and having had a close look at two examples of the current Mazda 6 wagon I am on the same page as the reviewer. Excellent quality, a well laid out interior, infotainment doesn’t need touch screen. Apart from being cleaner, much safer on the move and far less distracting. Concentrate on the road, anything else is dangerous, the cause of a lot of accidents. Complain all you like about the price, but very little else will have the ambience and quality. Anything cheaper will look cheap. A lot of modern German cars definitely don’t have the built from solid materials feel anymore never mind the confusing sub-menus and haptic buttons with no feedback. Mazda keeps it simple, elegant and easy to access. As for the Korean products, woeful interiors, too much piano black and poor reliability long term( check out how many recalls for Kia/Hyundai overseas). Sorry, Japanese made only.
The Mazda6 wagon is stunning. Here in the U.S., wagons are scarce as hens teeth. I wish there was some way we could import one but we know that’s impossible. We own a 2015 Mazda6, people are still asking us what kind of car is it because it’s so beautiful. Not everyone wants a TRUCK!
I don't get it. What is wrong with all the car reviewers. Do they not actually drive cars? What exactly do you need in an infotainment system that Mazda does not have? Do you want to play Farmville on it or something while driving? It has Android Auto and Apple Carplay if you need that. Mazda's approach is both aesthetically pleasing (no fugly ipad sticking out of the dash) and ergonomically perfect. The central controller with it's rotary dial and buttons is literally far superior to any touch screens, especially when driving. What are the most common tasks you would use infotainment during a drive? Changing music or radio stations, maybe dialing a phone and looking at navigation. Mazda's system excels in all of those things. I can scroll through my hundreds of music folders and playlists on USB on highway speeds or in city traffic without being a driving hazard. Literally impossible with touch screen only. I can also switch to phone and scroll through my phone contacts list with ease without ever changing my position - all with the buttons at the tip of my fingers and the controller. Or I can switch to message apps to look incoming messages. All without taking my eyes off the road or having to lean forward to touch the screen. There's a reason this system originated from premium driving oriented brands like BMW and Alfa. And guess what, the new 300k $ Aston Martin SUV does not have a touch screen either because it has the central controller. And apps like Waze lock themselves anyway when you're driving so you can't fiddle with them during driving either.
It has kind of reached a point of ridiculousness. Shopping for a car based on its infotainment screen would be like shopping for a mobile phone based on how well it flew through the air...
After reading these two comments my faith in humanity is restored. It’s a car not your living room with a 75” tv. Tired of reviewers doing what other reviewers do. Please review the car as it is to drive (The main reason we need one in the first place) then the rest later not the other way around.
mazda 6 its a sweet heart. I bought three new mazda 6 model 2008,2011 2016 used 6 months as new and a 2020 and I must say all of them were great cars but 2020 was the best to drive and handle .Mazda6 despite being 10 year old car still looks better than Accord,Camry or Altima and the way it drives nd handles non of the mentioned do and will ever . Mazda6 is best of the lot but I feel sad in 20 years it does not sell in numbers as its competitors.
Lovely review of the 2023 Mazda 6 touring...still love our 2016 Mazda 6 touring 2.5 na....in Malaysia..... definitely feels great driving the car, even after all these years.... greetings from Malaysia
Great review and as someone that drives an Alfa 159 wagon, it's the one that gets admiring glances from me - it's a great piece of design and destined to be a modern classic.
Yep. Exactly for this reason I got the MX-5 in 2022 (also, grown up kids, yadda yadda). I want a car to drive, not a car that drives me. Making the trip into part of the experience, even on my daily commute, not just getting from point A to point B. Cheers Mazda! Keep making cars for drivers!
I still own the first generation GJ bought in 2013 when it first came out. It still drives well and has zero internal squeaks compared to my 2017 Merc W205 C300,. The interior of the C300 squeaks like a rat when it goes on rough surfaces.
I wish car reviewers used a measuring tape for boots instead of volume. Volume means nothing if you are looking for info on how wide, long and high a useable space is. You don’t measure a room in litres so why measure that way in a car. It’s just a number on a manufacturers specification sheet.
Electronic tailgate could be due to chip shortage. Would be nice if they used the infotainment from the Mazda 3 etc. What do you get? Good driving, high quality and reliability, reliability, reliability. What’s the saying, once you’ve had Mazda, you never go back.
That's it! Mazda note they have very high customer retention and it is easy to see why. I'd forgive the boot if they put the media system in from the CX-30 - surely that wouldn't have been too hard! James
The car isn't engineered for an electric tail gate. It wasn't a thing for Mazda in 2012, when the first iteration of this car hit the road. The cost to put it on the platform now wouldn't make sense. It is the same reason the car has a generation older touch screen setup. Frankly I was surprised they put the turbo motor in it in the last refresh in 2018. What they have done is refine everything on the car since its launch and its now one of the most, if not the most polished car Mazda builds. Everything works and everything is going to last a long time. It is a fantastic long termer.
If you can get a second hand mazda 6, i think you get the most value. I bought a 2018 mazda 6 wagon turbo for 26k.. its really similar to the one here for half the price.. i extended the mazda warranty on it too to cover servicing. Very happy!
My bike fits in my 6 sedan with the larger back seat down. Just need to take the front wheel off. A little awkward to maneuver it in, but it works. I would LOVE the wagon! Alas, I am in the US.
Are the front seats comfortable for a long drive? How long is the thigh support compared to say a BMW3 ? Can you retro fit a full size spare ? These will be the deal breakers rather than no auto boot etc
Yes! Good support and good driving position. They don't have adjustable thigh support like a BMW though. Putting a full size spare may not be possible due to the size of the 19-inch wheels, but a space saver is far better than a can of goo or a 13-000 number.
James fair review but I do think youre being picky about the tailgate which is hardly a dealbreaker. The size of the infotainment screen is actually quite large enough and the rotary wheel dial is very easy to use when the car is in motion compared to a touch screen - by far!! I've just taken delivery of a new 20th Anniv Sedan in Rhodium White which is just gorgeous and I'm absolutely loving driving it .... i was never a Mazda fan before it and the car along with the customer service at Ringwood Mazda have made it a simply fabulous experience compared to the succession of Honda's I've had for the last 15 years!
Haha, agreed it was being picky but a power boot would just be a nice touch this far into the car's life. I regularly have bags or boxes in both hands and can't live without the kicker/powered tail on the X3. I'm thinking of others like me :) Agree the screen itself is nice, but when you see what the system in the CX-30 looks like, you just feel that Mazda could have ported that across. Congrats on the purchase - Mazda had a white 20th Anniv sedan at the launch and it looked fantastic! James
....yes James, you are being picky. An electronic tailgate means more weight and thats a problem with modern cars. They have become heavier and the gains in fuel efficiency is stiffled by more copper and steal.
@@Drivecomau ...but, this trinket plus that trinket as well as this and that one and over time 150kgs of weight has been added. How much does a modern Corolla weight v an early 80s Falcon.
It has everythign you need and if you can live without the turbo and fancy wheels the Touring Wagon makes a big argument for itself when it comes to value and has a slightly smoother ride too. Especially as most Mazda 6 wagons imported are the Touring trim level, so you will find Mazda have the most stock of them and you might also pick up a demonstrator.
Here's hoping we see another anniversary milestone for the '6!

I love that the Mazda doesn’t have electric boot. I hate that option… it takes so long to open and close. And apple CarPlay works perfect with the buttons around the knob. You press music goes to music, you press map goes to map…

The Mazda 6 Tourer Stationwagen Audi RS8 Avant Stationwagon doesnt even come close to an SUVs boot capacity that is just Sporty Stationwagons that go fast .
I totally disagree with you negative comments on the mapping system. As someone who's constantly racing around the city to multiple addresses the wheel function for navigating the maps or radio is a breeze. I drove a VW golf what a nightmare trying to enyre an address. You literly have to stop and enter an address.
I live in Tassie and we have the non turbo model of this car and engine. Around town we are 8.3 and on the highway around 6.2. Turbos are a little more thirsty so add a litre to each of those figures if you have a light foot. Problem with the turbo is you tend to drive it harder and that of course, pushes the fuel consumption up. Bought one recently- 23 Atenza wagon, Had a fault causing vibration at speed since new, took it back in 5 days after delivery, they couldn't fix it. Took it back in again before the monthly inspection. Has been at the dealers service dept for more than 5 weeks now. Their mechanics couldn't fix it, escalated to a technician from Mazda, couldn't fix it. Escalated to a specialist technician, still trying to work out what is causing the defect. They have ignored my requests to exercise my ACL rights to replacement or refund. I don't wish this on anyone. Really let down with Mazda, had higher expectations.
2003-2008 first generation Mazda 6 second generation 2008-2013 third generation 2013-2023 facelifted 2019 or perhaps earlier the 4th generation Mazda 6 should arrive down under 2025 than to Britain & Europe it should return To South Africa by the end of 2025 .
The CX-5 was given a refresh in late 2022 so still a bit early to expect any news of a subsequent update. We expect it'll get it's annual model year adjustment in late 2023 at this stage.
That shade of red oof. This is the only car I would trade in my 2019 Atenza Wagon for lol Thou I like my interior dark choc brown better than this lighter brown.
It really is a lovely colour. Paired with the tan interior the 20th Anniv is a ripper spec. The GT SP still represents the best value though - pity you have to take it with all the black trim.
I'm used to ancient Aussie sixes, this car left me disappointed. Often on the highway the larger engine will be more economical and more pleasant behind.
I have a 2015 Kia Optima. A very good highway cruiser and no problems taking over road trains on the Stuart Highway which I have driven in an AU3 SR Falcon and a 2007 DB2 380SX. All good cruisers. I'm surprised that the 6 wouldn't also be a suitable vehicle for the Aussie highways. If I wasn't planning on replacing the Optima with a ute or SUV, a Camry or 6 would be my target cars.
Hmm. I've had eight and six cylinder Falcons and have a VF SS Commodore in the garage too. Never felt the 6 was underpowered for highway work and we have the non turbo model. Its a four so knock it down a couple of gears if you need to. The car has manual shift, sport mode and paddles, so its not a big chore to do and the car will pick up its skirt and go fine for overtaking.
Honestly, $60,000 for someting straight out of 2013 is stupid, so many better options for your money than this dinosaur, why is he being so polite about the infotainment, its a dog
If you're that worried about infotainment while you're driving, maybe you should just stay in your mother's basement on your preferred gaming console and keep yourself and every other motorist safe.
To be fair, they have refined the car significantly from when it was launched (the interior is totally different) but it is still old. However as Arnie said in one of those Terminator sequels, "old, not obsolete" . The '6 is still a lovely car to drive, I only wish Mazda had fixed some things to bring it in line with other Mazdas - just adding the infotainment widescreen from the CX-30 would have been enough. But it's not the be-all and end-all of the car. There are enough features of the system to keep you happy, especially if you ignore CarPlay and just use MZD direct.
Dont know what youve been smoking but these ''issues'' - mainly the infotainment system are minor in the scheme of things And your statement about being ''straight out of 2013'' is dumb and inaccurate - you too Drivecomau if thats what you implied
I’d rather the Mazda station wagon over any Mazda SUV 👍🇦🇺

Jealous from the US
Honestly, $60,000 for someting straight out of 2013 is stupid, so many better options for your money than this dinosaur, why is he being so polite about the infotainment, its a dog
Can you play mine craft on it?
Agree
Dont know what youve been smoking but these ''issues'' - mainly the infotainment system are minor in the scheme of things
And your statement about being ''straight out of 2013'' is dumb and inaccurate - you too Drivecomau if thats what you implied
