    I know your photography business and the time you spend with youtube are not showcased on your videos, but your lifestyle is very enviable, from my perspective. I remember as a newly wed, working full time in the factory (shift work) and farming after hours. I farmed 350 acres with a Farmall 706 diesel and 3 furrow semi-mounted plow. I don't know why I didn't quit. I think those days are why I think the way I do today. "Cash is King". I started from scratch. No hand-ups. I can now sell-out (64 YO) and bank my profits and let the young guys go crazy. Just remember, the market doesn't give a rat's ass about your costs. Never did, never will. Let's hope the world eats up the huge surplus we have today and the margins can grow a little healthier. I decide to pull the pin and head for the barn a month ago. I'm done. I recently offered my farm to a young guy, I asked him is this what you really want to do (farm), then it's yours. I'll help him all I can. It's been an adventure. I hope someone gives you the break you deserve. Your friend Doug.

    GMSR frequencies actually require a license and they assign you a call sign. It's $65 for a 5 year license that covers all family members. If you stick to the FSR channels then no license requirements. Those radios have both channel sets on them.

    On the corn... I inquired this year a feed specialist on cracking the corn. Long story short he claimed if your feeding a hay ration on top of shelled corn you could be looking at as much as 50% loss on not cracking.
    But, if your just feeding shell corn like to feeder steers say there digestive system slows down and will absorb way more. That's where it's sometimes worth weighing out of grinding or rolling is worth it. That's just what I was told and I condensed it for you. Keep up the good work.

    Ryan, don't expect to get the distance listed on the Midland radio package.
    Those are vastly over-rated and are for ideal circumstances like talking from one mountain top to another mountain top with no obstacles in between. Under typical conditions you might get half the distance listed when talking between hand held radios.

    My 2000 dodge ram diesel with Manual transmission gets 24 mpg 16 hauling the stock trailer loaded."11cows" it's not a stock pickup. If you get rid of that DEF put a better flow exhaust, cold air intake and a good Tune on it you will get better mpg.

    • @edcs13
      @edcs13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      V&G farm only thing with a cold air intake is u only get like 2 more mpg and maybe 8 horse power not really worth the money if ya ask me. If it was I would have done it to mine already

    • @nickskraba
      @nickskraba 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cold air does nothing. When air goes in the intake and gets compressed by the turbo it needs to be hot.

    I filled up my truck on top of a mountain and drove down the 3 mile decent and my computer said I was getting 77 mpg. I don't really think those computers are an accurate way to check your mpg.

      My pickup doesnt have that feature (96) but my car does and i find that it estimates low. 19 gallon tank and it will say i have sixty miles to empty about 3 gallons but it will only take like 14

    • @petep8828
      @petep8828 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re going down hill, the computers (these days) are some what accurate (2+/- MPG). Going down hill means the engines are not really using any fuel because the gravity is not only going against the vehicle but is also propelling it. Therefore why you got 77 MPG downhill.

    To understand the market. The US Government back in the 1930's promised Americans they would always have cheap food. Unfortunately that falls on the backs of farmers and food middle men with price control. Is this fair ? Well that is the cards dealt to you. The market prices are set, not by what the farmers want to sell, but by what usurers ( customers) are willing to pay. Usurers would be the Pillsbury, Purina, Walmart, ect ect. Weather comes in to play nationwide as per droughts, too much rain, hail so a great crop will be priced low because there is no shortage. It is a delicate system, bur other industries have forms of price control too....

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you're talking about is supply and demand. There is no price controls... They tried production controls on a lot of crops in the 50's and 60's (and even into the early 70's and longer with some crops like tobacco where you had to have an allotment to even plant the stuff, but it didn't work.) When we cut production some other country simply ups production and keeps the price low. The ONLY form of "price/production control" that has worked has been DeBeers with diamonds, and the International Sugar Compact which limits sugar production.
      We live in a "world economy" now where the US farmer is expected to compete against the world's cheapest producers... it's a race to the bottom. I know in the cotton business, we were expected to compete against African villagers growing garden plots of cotton behind their huts and getting paid 6 cents a pound for cotton. If it's not that it's China-- average cotton farm size in China is about 2.5 acres... they go to the communist co-op and buy a bag of cotton seed-- not 50 pounds but it comes in a little bag like popcorn! They plant by hand, weed by hand, fertilize it with hog manure from hogs they raise, go through the field and pick off the bugs and squash them and pinch the growing points if it starts getting too tall instead of using growth regulator sprays, and then pick it by hand and haul it to the gin and sell it to the gubmint co-op... Just a TOTALLY different means of production-- all they have in it is labor and therefore everything they get is PROFIT... Not like the US where a new cotton picker STARTS at $600,000 and goes up from there... let alone the other costs of production.
      It's the same with everything else... it's all "supply and demand" and of course that is just a race to the bottom, because there is *always* someone who can grow it CHEAPER than you can and *still make money*. Maybe not much, but *enough*.
      Later! OL J R :)
