    • @korudero
      @korudero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@aquatrax123 You've got a fair point, but the idea of engineering some sort of device to detect when a skimmer is attached would be pretty useful. I'm by no means good at electronics but I'm willing to bet that such a device is possible.

    • @Stephon723
      @Stephon723 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@aquatrax123 I agree with Daniel. Similar technology Could be used. To answer your question, The technology in the "skim reaper" DOES the detection that a card has been read twice. That double read is then indicated/communicated By the technology to the user. Regardless of our ignorance of how that technology works, that same technology could identify the double read and instead of using a red light on a handheld device as an indicator, The indicator could be a tripped alarm (to the bank), AND immediate disabling of the machine until the skimmer is removed AND on-screen notification "SKIMMER DETECTED" to the user at the ATM.
      All that said it's reactive rather than proactive. I think in agreement with Daniel Banks should install a monitoring system That lets them know that the device has been tampered with and the skimmer has been installed. This way before any double read ever happens, That alarm is tripped and the device is disabled until a certified technician comes out to fix it. Self diagnosis just like when you turn your car on And you get a low oil indicator. Install the software that detects skimmers skimmers or extra parts or unauthorized parts or missing parts. The software should always be running In the background.

    Please note that US is the last country still using magnetic card reader for payment. Everywhere else payment is done by chip card, since more than 10 years.
    This is simply due to the fact that US banks are not responsible for the losses, so they do not care.

    • @tatoute1
      @tatoute1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kurama_02 If it is so, it's caused by a design flaw in the chip, because it's easy to have non copyable chips, using only Zero Knowledge Proof (aka challenge responses). As usual US banks probably choose not to implement any security, making a chip equivalent of the unsecure magnetic strip. One example of that no-security culture is paypass, where absolutly no security is involved. It's purely equivalent to the old card shoe, except there it's not even signed. This is another example of banks lazyness because they can put the risk on the customer.

    • @FusionDeveloper
      @FusionDeveloper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1 device is hooked up to banks, the other device just reads the card offline.
      The card itself doesn't store a number of swipes on it, nor does the card wirelessly transmit data to the bank any time a reader is used.
      If you have a battery powered card reader and you are out in the woods and swipe your card to get the data, nobody would know.
      Purchases are the only thing being transmitted.
      Now if a skimmer was to instantly transfer money to an account as soon as it is scanned, then that could easily be detected by a bank as 2 swipes within a very short time since there would be 2 transactions. Then of course, they could just add a delay to overcome that.

    They should sell these to the business owners and they should make it a daily responsibility of one the crew members to go out and check the pumps real quick. It would really nice if they could somehow put this technology into our credit and debit cards.

    Never used a debit card like a credit card for purchasing stuff, period. Get & use a low-level brand gas card (Shell, Chevron, etc.) instead of using any regular major credit card at the gas pump.

      Yes. No physical contact is made thus it can not be skimmed. It is incredibly difficult for a contactless card to be hacked. Only danger is if you lose the actual card.

    this wont work.. many a times, truck fleet owners ue the same credit card to fuel more than one vehicle / trucks.... and thats where the fraud happens. Else the visa / master cards can detect duplicate reads and caution the card owner
