      Perhaps a law where someone arrested for skimming from snap cards would also be charged with child endangerment. One charge for each card skimmed. Convictions could end up costing the criminals dozens of years of sentencing.

    Retailers/Corporations should be 100% responsible for any losses - they each need their own tech person or security person that insures that their machines are not tampered with. The customer should never be responsible for these situations.

      The usually are. When your credit card is used without your authorization and you file a claim, the issuing bank will refund you for that amount and "charge back" the retailer. When retailers accept cards and use payment processors like Visa and Mastercard, they are agreeing to their terms which includes a clause that makes them responsible for verifying the identify of the customer matches the card.

    • @leapintothewild

      @@lesliepropheter5040 It's a moot point. EVERY CUSTOMER PAYS when ANY company is ripped off through higher prices, interest rates and fees! You think Walmart takes the hit after being shoplifted?? NO. It's part of the price we ALL pay, and we ALL pay the same price whether rich or poor. Banks and credit card companies pass the 'refunded' and 'covered' scam costs to the customers as well -- along with charging higher processing fees to vendors which, again, gets passed to the CUSTOMER. No matter what type of company, no matter what type of financial loss, it's passed along in some way and the CUSTOMER ALWAYS PAYS.

    I work for a financial institution and our ATMs will set off an alarm and shut down if a skimmer is in place for a period of time. Period of time being minutes, less than double digits. Yes, scammers and thieves have those minutes to obtain ATM users card info, but it’s a solid, reliable safety feature that I hope brings peace to some people knowing that institutions do have security measures in place.
    There are a lot of good, useful comments on here so I hope folks take the necessary steps to protect their money. Setting up alerts for your accounts and debit card usage will pay huge dividends. Credit cards will always reign over debit cards for security features. When in doubt, contact your financial institution immediately.

      Or tap to pay. Then you don’t get skimmed. Even if it does, credit card info never leaves the phone. So the thief has no actual usable information. Haven’t had to carry cash for ages.
      I stopped getting fraudulent purchases years ago when I started using tap to pay exclusively. Same for my mom when I set it up for her.

      You are more likely to be robbed or lose your money. Honestly if people are worried about being skimmed- use tap to pay as it has proven to be incredibly secure. Even the shimming mentioned here is good for one fraudulent use as newer cards have a one time use code sent and that's extremely secure (think two factor using a code generator....almost unheard of being broken).
      Even if by some miracle you got defrauded this way. Credit card companies by law protect you against fraudulent use.

    Why not utilize 2-factor authentication for card transactions? When you use your card at an ATM or POS terminal, your bank sends you a text with a randomly generated PIN that's only valid for 2 minutes. Of course, this would need to be optional because not everyone has a phone on them all the time, but people that want that extra layer of protection and are willing to use it, could benefit.

    • @Gaookami

      Generally a very good idea. I use 2FA wherever possible. However think about situations where is a lot of customer traffic like grocery shopping etc. That would cause additional waiting time. Factor in technical problems and I think many would not want that.

    • @TheoWerewolf
      @TheoWerewolf ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's what the PIN is for. That IS the 2FA. But the US, unlike the rest of the world decided that ANY inconvenience is too big and went with chip and sign or even just skipping chip and using magstripe. Tap and pay from a digital wallet is even better because you have to unlock your phone with a third PIN or a biometric like your finger print BEFORE you can tap.
      The tech isn't the problem - it's the US implementation of it.

When it was my turn to be rung up at a local store, the next customer in line proceeded to stand behind me instead of staying in line. Or maybe apple should have a built in feature in the apple wallet that notifies you if you try to tap your phone on a device with an attached skimmer

    • @tjmarx
      @tjmarx ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is that there is no single design, and you normally don't need a tool to remove them. They're not bolting these things on, they're usually either held by gravity or a low tack adhesive.
      Skimmers are made to look like their target ATM or EFTPOS terminal. Those come in all different shapes, colours and designs, so too do the skimmers.
      The goal in installing and removing skimmers is speed so as not to be noticed.
      A skimmer doesn't do anything different from a legitimate reader, so you can't have apple or whoever detect anything. The skimmer is reading the same information as the terminal is, only it's storing that information instead of using it to process payment.
      You can usually spot a skimmer because it looks like an extra bit on the terminal or sticks out in a subtle way.
      Edit: The way to avoid skimmers is by using tap n go through a third party wallet like google or apple. These use one time encrypted tokens so even the merchant doesn't get your card. Don't take your physical card with you, just use your phone. If tap n go isn't working back out of the transaction and go elsewhere.

    One potential solution should be rather easy to implement. Different numbers for different tech. Your modern card has a mag stripe, and NFC tag and a chip. Each of these should have a different number so if they read a chip, they can't copy that data to a magstripe, the reader would see the magstripe data does not belong to a magstripe. Online purchases should be done with a different, virtual card number. Cards should not have any info on them at all, other than maybe a name. Apple credit cards are this way.
    Also, disable the magstripe and tap to pay on physical cards so only the chip works. If a merchant can't do chip, use a different merchant.

    One thing that has helped us is setting up the transaction texts from our bank. I knew within 15 minutes that our card had been stolen! Within the next 15 called the bank and had it shut off. The criminals managed to spend $500 in that timeline so it was crazy. The bank was already flagging because so many “card present”purchases had happened miles from each other in such a short time so that was good. My husband immediately got ahold of the gas station where it had been skimmed so they could close the pump but the young attendant didn’t know what to do at all! We now try to only use pumps that are in the highest traffic areas where the criminals might fear being seen.

      With tap to pay you don’t have to worry about any of that. Large banks have nfc terminals now so you just tap and to find your account and then enter your pin. Even IF tap gets skimmed, card info never leaves the phone because of the way it works (tokenization) so the thief doesn’t get any info.
      Haven’t had to carry cash in years and I stopped getting fraudulent charges years ago too when I started using tap (Apple Pay/google pay). Same thing for my mom when I convinced her to let me set it up for her. She was reluctant at first (like many older people) but loves it now since she hasn’t had fraudulent charges in ages. In he rest of the world where Chip/pin was properly implemeted, a card issued as a chip card cannot be used as a mag stripe card in a terminal that can support chip/pin. So even if they copy the "magstripe" content from the chip and write onto blank mag stripe card, the transaction will be rejected by issuing bank back home unless that POS terminal lacks chip capability. (mag stripe-only terminals still common in USA but not in rest of world). If merchant is on a magstripe-only POS, then he bears costs of fraudulent transaction.
    In parts of the USA where bank adopted the useless chip/signature, many foreign cards would fail because the rules built into the card's software required chip/pin but the terminal would reject that option since it did not have the software to handle chip/pin. (this is less of a problem in recent times).
    Other countries moved quickly from magstripe to chip/pin and this has made miuse of card data far less of a problem. The USA moved too slowly and didn't jump onto chip/pin right from start. Chip/signature cards are useless because you don't need to deal with the isse of PIN verification which is one way test on the card (feed it the PIN and card responds to POS with "yes" or "no", and in some cases, the PIN is transmitted to issuing back with the transaction authorisation and it is the bank that verifies it. But you cannot obtain the pin from the card because it is stored as one-way encrypted with keys.

    We have this problem because there is no downside to committing these crimes. Very few criminals are smart enough to write the software and burn the chips necessary to commit these crimes. Those who make the electronics should receive lifetime without parole and no outside access to prevent them from ever writing or distributing the tools criminals use to commit these crimes. The criminals upon being caught should receive at least ten years without parole on a first offense and double the sentence for each additional offense. Members of the public should be allowed to catch and stop these criminals with whatever means they wish without fear of liability of any sort, no matter the harm done to the criminals. Once a good person catches and orders a criminal to drop the skimmer and submit, the criminal should have no other option than to obey. If the criminal fights back, th4e criminal goes away for life. If the criminal kills the good person, the criminal gets fried extra crispy in old sparky. Legal public vigilance is a good thing. That will put a damper on skimming offenses and other crime.
