- The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is a great everyday, walk-around lens. As such, it has become my favourite lens to use. This is my full review of the RF 35mm f/1.8. I am not sponsored by Canon in any way, and these are my 100% honest opinions.

In this lens review, I go over the build quality, image quality, focusing, macro capabilities and more. It's an incredibly versatile lens, and I absolutely love the RF 35mm. It is sharp, has good focusing, doesn't distort at all and the images out of it just look very good. The f/1.8 makes a beautifully blurry background too.
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 lens might not boast all the bells and whistles, but its unique blend of capabilities, image quality, and compact design make it a favorite go-to for everyday shooting. While it may not have the prestige of a pro-level lens, the RF 35mm f/1.8 has a unique appeal that's hard to resist.

Thanks for the review! Debated on getting this lens for a while but super happy I did it is so useful on the RP, our only native option. I have the 50mm 1.8 and I am a more 50mm kind of guy but this is such a step up in usability from that. Here’s hoping they do a 1.4 in that price range with IS and a MF ring.
35mm on full frame is what I grew up on when using disposable film cameras, so it feels easy to compose shots with it. I have a 50mm lens too but it often feels too tight for snapshots.

I am an amateur and just ordered an RP with this lens, going for a general purpose camera that is a nice image quality upgrade over my old 7D which served me very well but it's way too bulky for what I want from a camera. 🙂

I’ve always preferred 35mm over 50mm for most things actually 🤔
@@kaspergaram35mm is a much more practical all day focal length than 50mm. 50mm is highly regarded for portraits but not as useful as 35mm.

i just got it last week on nice sale. it is my first ever prime (excepting manual ones) and i think it will stay very, very much of a time on my camera. your review is spot on, nothing to add, but.. :) i just disagree on macro auto focusing, autofocusing on macro can be important when shooting kids, like i did yesterday :).. and then you just have to be lucky, to get the focus on time, and right place. but for 400eur.. it is great deal! totally agree on aberrations , vigneting.. photography is about the moment, about motive.. this lens has more than good image quality..
i love it and i am excited to use my camera again, since previously i had just 28 70 which is super large and heavy for every day usage :)

There’s obviously scenarios that are ”out of the ordinary” where you might need features that aren’t that important for most use cases. Same thing about the chromatic aberration and vignetting. In some cases, for example metallic product photos, you just can not have any chromatic aberration at all. But as you said, for 400€ this lens is just incredible 👌
Hi, how good is it for video, general purpose home/travel videos? Heard it focuses slow for video.
I love it. The IS is great for handheld video. The size is great for travel. The focal length is not wide enough to show a full room in a regular home though. And yes, the focusing gets pretty slow in videos
How will it perform on an R7 compared to the 24mm 1.8?
I’m sorry but I haven’t used the R7 nor the 24mm. I would guess it’s more of a matter pf opinion ion which focal lemgth you want
Am I the only one that does not care about weather sealing at all?
Lol definitely not! I mean, it’s a great thing to have just in case, but it’s not a deciding factor for me at all. The reason I talk about it is that a lot of people do care about it

Sorry but once you use a L lens going back becomes a road of disappointment.
I know how you feel, but IMO the non-L RF lenses have been surprisingly good. With EF lenses I thought exactly the same, but I don’t think it’s the case with RF
