Late reply but may be useful for others. Building it with a 4x1 mux out of 2x1 mux we only have 2 inputs to work with so since we need 4 we divide it by 2. We got the 4 inputs as required right? Well since they’re 2x1 we are getting 2 outputs. But we need a 4x1 mux. If we used only the 2 we would have a 4x2 mux technically. So we divide it by 2 again. We have 1 we are reducing the outputs at each “stage” I guess you could call it until we get to our desired single output. That’s how I think of it at least.
Why the select line for first and second MUX must be the same? I saw this question three times on the comment section, I think that is a common question between us
if there are 2 inputs, then 1 select line (since 2 to the power 1 is 2 ). If if there are 4 inputs, then 2 select lines (since 2 to the power 2 is 4 ), 3 lines for 8 inputs(2 to the power 3 is 8) , 4 for 16 inputs and so on.. just think what should be the power of 2 so it matches the number of input lines
