    I must be a nervous non stop begonia caregiver 😅. I asked on another of your videos about care. I grew them from seed and want to save money by overwintering. It took forever to start them and had a terrible time with gnats and aphids this past late winter, but we made it.😊. The blooms were super gorgeous and one of my favorite flowers, but I haven’t bought them in a long time because they are expensive.
    So I have them chopped off as you did, so I’m feeling good about that as some leave 5” length or say to pop them off. They are fairly dry right now and they did look like a glob of roots and I was expecting a clean tuber which must not be the case. So today I will pop them in paper bags and store in experimental above ground root cellar and monitor temp. If it gets too cold the best I can do is put them in the north corner of the house by the door.
    So they are suppose to look like a glob of roots? Suppose the tubers are small the first year?
    Thank you!

      Well, I had to look up Begonia Calla Lily as I thought you were messing with me. I knew that calla lilies and begonias could not be crossed. It looks like an interesting houseplant though. Thx for this video! I have a begonia rex and a calla lily. I didn't know any of this needed to happen until today:) My begonia rex I think went dormant - it dropped its leaves about 2 months ago and is just a stump. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away even tho I thought it was dead. Is it too late to overwinter it? I'm in California. It also has these tiny black bugs in the soil which is what I thought killed it. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Begonia 'Rex' is not a tuberous begonia. It needs to continuously grow and cannot be overwintered in the way described in this video. Begonia 'Rex' is renown for being difficult to grow and, unfortunately it sounds like you've lost yours. Sorry.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes Calla lilies go dormant early if conditions aren't right. If the tuber is still firm, the plant will regrow in spring. Leave tubers to dry for a day before placing in the paper bag. I put all mine in together, one bag for each type. Hope this helps.

    On the Cala lily, I’ve just taken mine out of it’s pot to overwinter and it has numerous individual bulbs on it. Do I separate these now as you said and plant them separately next year or do I plant them all in one pot? It’s the Picasso variety just like yours. I didn’t do this last year and I only had one flower this year which was disappointing. Thanks.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find when I lift my callas, very often they separate themselves. If you want to do it and they are reluctant, I would use a sharp knife. I'm not sure your poor flowering last year would be as a result of not dividing them.

  • @theuglykwan
    @theuglykwan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a chance they could survive outside if you mulch the hell out of them? I recall doing that with dahlias and begonias in Scotland. There would be some loss during some years but i found most would pop back up. Too lazy to dig them up!

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and good luck this year. Yes, you can put more than one tuber in a bad so long as they are properly dry. If they are not then they will rot so it's always a good idea to take the odd glance at them over winter. I start mine off in pots again in the greenhouse in February.

      They really do better if started in pots, maybe in your porch! But frost will knock them right back so, depending on your weather, keep an eye on them and cover with fleece or something if frost is forecast.

    Is it possible to leave begonias in the dry compost in a cold greenhouse ,and what time they need bringing on for spring 🤔

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. Begonias need to be overwintered in a cool place at a temperature minimum 45F (7C). When you pot them up in spring will depend on your climate and where you can leave the pots. I usually pot mine in March in the greenhouse. I am in roughly zone 9. Incidentally, your questions are timely as tomorrow (30th October) at 7pm I will publish a more in depth video on overwintering begonias. Hope you will check it out.

    Thanks for this video, very useful. Can I just ask a question though, I took a cutting from a new begonia this year and it’s grown really well. Do I overwinter this the same as you’ve shown on this video, ie chop it right down and store it in a bag? I’m just concerned as it only has roots and not a tuber (if this makes sense to you).

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, don't cut your cutting back. Just overwinter it frost free but warmer if you have the facilities! I have occasionally bought flowering plants only to find they have no tuber so you cannot overwinter them this way. By next winter your cutting should have a tuber. We'll done, by the way!

      Hello. The only reason the calla lilies are lifted here in Ireland is because they are not winter hardy. I do not think this plant needs a winter rest but can tolerate one. I usually restart mine indoors or in the greenhouse around February as it coincides with increasing Irish temperatures.

    My begonias are in also. Just kills me to cut off all the beautiful flowers, but it must be done. At least by the time I have to dig up the dahlias they have been cut down by frost so no loss of flowers there but can't wait until the frost hits the begonias before doing this. This year I have also potted up my dragonwing begonias and brought them in as well as rooting cuttings. The dragonwings were magnificient this year growing 6ft wide in hanging baskets. Never seen such a thing but loved it and could not bare to let them die which if left out where I live they would have done.

      +Jackie Binkley I am with you 100%, Jackie. Why let something die when it is not hard to overwinter it. I'm also leaving my dahlias for the frost before lifting.

    What if it was planted on the country with out winter. Is it ok to just leave it on the soil?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the northern hemisphere the reason why we have to overwinter calla lilies in this way is that they come from warmer climates than ours. If you are lucky enough to live in a warm enough climate then your call should be fine left outdoors. Rainfall is another issue though. Hope this helps.

    • @GardeningatDouentza

      @@princephilip5678 Not necessarily. It depends which calla you have. Some are deciduous and some, like Zantedeschia aethiopica, may be evergreen in a warmer climate.

    What plant is very important for you?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, there are many plants that are important to me. The 'birth trees' I planted for my children are important. Other plants remind me of the people who gave them to me or the people who loved those plants and are now gone. My favourite groups are cattleya orchids, roscoea, caudex plants and South African bulbs. Hope this answers your question.

    How many flower(s) per bulb does the calla lily provide? Same for the Begonias? I wonder if it's a one to one ratio or if you get multiple flowers per? Thanks

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. The begonia will produce flowers according to its type and bulb size. Some begonias have large flowers and some produce clusters of smaller ones. Generally speaking, a more mature bulb will produce bigger flowers. The calla is similar and each bulb will produce a new growth per eye. Hope this helps.

    If your growing them in pots...couldn't you just leave them in the pots and bring them in a basement or garage that doesn't freeze

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with leaving begonias/cannas in pots is that you need to pot them up with fresh mix in spring anyway so it is easier to remove the soil in autumn and have less to store. There is also a danger that the potting soil doesn't dry out completely so will rot your tubers. Hope this answers your question.
