- For 2021's "Mortal Kombat," the film's sound team got really creative to pay tribute to the franchise's signature bloody kills. Foley artist Adrian Medhurst had to account for the blood spurting and bones breaking of any given gruesome moment.
To make the sounds as organic as possible, he experimented with all types of foods. For a bone-cracking body split, he snapped celery and pepper. And to cover blood spurting out of someone's heart, he found he could get the right squirting sound by manipulating a grapefruit. Meanwhile, sound designers like Robert Mackenzie and James Ashton added distinct distortions to create characters' signature moves, such as Kung Lao's hat when he uses it as a weapon.

Mortal Kombat played by sped kids.
When I watched that movie I didnt even think about the sounds I was so focused on the visual gore and appreciating the creativity and quality cgi. But after watching this and recollecting my thoughts the sounds were so good! So good that what I heard was expected and undetected. Gotta commend them.

This is absolutely amazing. I never really put much thought into just how much goes into producing believable sounds for what amounts to just seconds in the movie and how much dedication and work and trial and error goes into it. Mad respect to the people in this line of work that make it sound completely natural and not even make you question the authenticity when, in reality, you KNOW, rationally, that nobody´s head is actually getting smashed open. Big thumbs up!!
