My Civil Engineering Degree in 20 Minutes

  • Ever wondered what it looks like to be a civil engineering undergraduate student? In this video, I'll go over everything, my college background, courses, GPA, and percentage of knowledge I use on my job as a construction engineer now.
    I got my civil engineering degree from the University of Washington from 2012-2015. I was lucky that I knew what I wanted to do going into college. I attribute a lot of my "success" to getting experience through internships in the summers between my years, and getting a head start with AP classes from high school. Civil engineering is not a crazy thing to major in for college, but it is a very fun and fulfilling degree. You don't need to be perfect in college and have perfect grades, to me, it's the experience you get outside of the classroom that will separate you from your engineering peers.

    I LOVE this video. I like that you proved you don't need a perfect GPA to be a successful engineer, and that most of it you don't even use! I was hoping that after your internship, the classes would become more relevant and useful, but alas... that's college. I definitely think you should do another one on your Master's to supplement your previous video.

    Very interesting that such a large portion of your courses weren't that interesting to you. I studied civil engineering for 1 year before switching to mechanical engineering, and it was without a doubt the hardest decision I've had to make in my life so far. Mainly because I started out with civil instead of mechanical engineering because I don't really care much about electronics and control, and civil basically has none of that. And also because at my university there is a research group within structural engineering that looks at offshore structures with a big focus on hydrodynamic modelling of wind turbines and wave energy converters, which sounds super interesting and I could absolutely see myself doing that.
    But the focus on fluid mechanics and wind turbines only starts when you get to the masters, and having to get through 2 years of courses and projects that for the most part didn't sound that interesting sounded like it wasn't worht it. But having seen your experience of college it has made me reconsider whether or not I should be patient and go for the structural engineering masters instead of mechanical engineering.

    Hey Kienen, did you have any involvement with clubs in college (ie ASCE, AGC, XE, etc.)? In my experience, industry professionals really advocated for students to get involved with engineering related clubs to have the ability to start networking with the industry and gain some experience more relatable to the real world. Many friends gained internships and jobs out of college through some of these programs and in my experience it was a resume buster.
    I’m curious to know if your university/local industry (Washington and/or Hawaii) made any similar pushes toward club involvement. I’d like to hear your perspective, and maybe this could be another video that goes along with this and the masters video 🤷‍♂️.
    Anyway, sorry to write so much, and thanks for reading!

    Hey Kienen, I'm currently a geotech EIT and wanting to switch to construction. You mentioned wanting to get your PE license. I'm debating switching into construction now or waiting until after I take the geotech PE exam and completing the required four years of experience for the license. I'm currently at three years of experience, so almost there, but can't really see myself staying in geotech much longer. What do you see as being the main benefit of having a PE as an engineer in construction? I've really enjoyed your videos. Thanks!

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The benefit it more a “prestige” and just having another tool in the tool belt. You will need to have a PE sign off on your experience so maybe stick it out for a bit just to get it done. You can definitely thrive in the construction industry without a PE, however. Most higher ups probably dont have their PE

Probably not, which is why i try to suggest to get a cheaper masters while you work and gain that industry knowledge. Best if luck to you Michael!

    I strongly disagree- all those courses are fundamental to inherently understanding and thinking in an intuitive way as an engineer. Just because you aren't using those topics specifically or solving an integral does not mean it should not be learned. Working as an engineer is different, but it is critical to have the foundation from such classes at work. And even if your specific job doesn't use topics from a class, does not deem it irrelevant to the field in general. Also, Dynamics is not just for mechanical engineers. It is an important subject to model many things in Civil projects as well

    • @KienenKoga

      Awesome Edward! I may make a whole video on this later, but in a nutshell, construction engineers focus more on how the project gets built, civil engineers focus on the infrastructure, grading, and more ground work type stuff and structural engineers will focus on the vertical design of a project.

      I usually suggest if the engineering aspect interests you, go for civil engineering because it can open more doors for you in my opinion in the event you want to move away from construction. However, if you know construction is what you want, then CM has more applicable coursework to the industry and is likely a little easier to complete.
