    I forgot to clarify on the video that the gauge of wire used is determined by the amps of the accessory. Items using 10 - 15amps can use 18 - 16 gauge; 20amps use no less than 14 gauge

    • @orlandovega6986

      Proper way is using Relays.

    • @joeradler
      @joeradler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this tip to add a relay and use 12g wire as my switch DID get hot using this method and 16g wire (only the load wire side got hot, though the accessory out wire stayed perfectly cool). I now understand the too-small wire problem but can someone explain (1) the overheating load wire while out wire remained cool and (2) what a relay will do to solve this problem?

    • @petittrainguernsey3297
      @petittrainguernsey3297 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeradler Relay acts as a switch, keeping the circuit the fan is on separate. Don’t forget to add a fuse on the positive side. Wire getting hot because it’s taking the whole load for the fan and switch. Fans draw large amps so it’ll get warm if not thick enough.
      Putting a relay in keeps the circuitry for the accessory compact and isolated.

    I’m sorry I’m lost I have a factory stereo and it’s connected to my amp but my amp stays on even when I turn the car off where can I add the toggle switch and where do I get the power to do that

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you connect the amp to a constant 12v source? If you run it the through a source that is only activated through the ignition, it will only get power when the ignition switch is activated. You could also add an in-line toggle switch that will only send 12volts when the switch in “on”. Find the dedicated 12v line going to the amp and cut it. Add the toggle there, but make sure to add an in-line fuse prior to the voltage reaching the amp. This will protect the amp in the event of a power surge. The layout should be...12v source, in-line fuse, in-line toggle switch and finally the amp. Make sure you ground the amp on the chassis. Do not connect to an existing device’s ground.

    ok so i’m trying to wire this retractable license plate holder to my car and it’s got one of those standard 12v plug and my question is if i wire it straight to the battery cause my battery is in the trunk when i cut the car off will it automatically cut off or will i have to cut the switch off while the car is off the only reason i ask this is because the kit came with a key that you can use when the car is off

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it’s wired directly to the battery without a toggle switch, it will constantly be getting power. You need to run it through an in-line fuse (and possibly a relay switch) BEFORE it hits the toggle switch. You need to be able to cut off the power when not in use.

    Is the black ground wire connected to the black side of the car battery or the red? If the accessory is connected to the black side of the battery, do you have any part of it connected to the red side? I realize I sound ignorant. It's because I am.

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Black gets grounded on the chassis. You can attach to the negative (black) terminal on the battery but chassis is better. The red is your 12v power which supplies power to the accessories, running through a fuse prior to the accessories

    Why do people switches melt ? Is it because they didn't add that safety fuse in the 12v wire?

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the fuse will help, but most overheating issues are due to wrong wire gauge. The higher the gauge, the thinner which will melt. I recommend no higher than 14gauge to be safe. Ultimately you want to know you amps of the device; that will determine the proper gauge needed.

      Vlogstar Parm if they’re smoking you may also have too thin of a gauge of wire. Depending on the amps you’re drawing will determine the gauge you need.

      Vlogstar Parm led strip lighting is usually about 2 amps. If that is your case then 20 gauge should be sufficient. I personally would go with 18 just to play it safe. Never hurts to go heavier for precaution

    Good video, btw i wanna get opinion from you, im planning to set up 1 switch for 2 pairs DRL (front & rear).
    Power source from ACC fuse box to fuse to Switch, wiring from Switch to DRL1, use SnapLock to split wire for DRL2, then use SnapLock again for pair connection for both DRL.
    1. Do we still need that fuse before Switch if the power source were already from ACC fuse box?
    2. Is the power supply sufficient?
    3. My RockerToggleSwitch listed as 12V 35A, is there any problem using a 35A switch for low power LED DRL(i believe its below 2A?) or do we need to find low amp Switch?
    Thanks much!

    I think this will work for an exhaust cutout but my only concern is with an on off switch. Either on or off, one of those ways wouldn’t the power always be trying to close or open the device. In this case I don’t want to always have power going to the valve that closes or opens. Wouldn’t that burn up the motor? If so, how would I fix this problem?

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fly n fury use a momentary switch, not a toggle. The power will be disengaged unless the button/switch is pressed. When the button/switch is let go, the power will be cut off again.

      Phillips Vision I’ll try to keep this simple as I didn’t think about this earlier but I can’t hold the button in while I’m driving for a period of time. If holding the button in is open on the valve as soon as I let go of the button the valve would shut again or stay in that position? I need the valve to stay in that position and then on my next press of the button close the valve. How do I do that?

    • @PhillipsVision
      @PhillipsVision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      fly n fury then just use a toggle switch “on / off”

    • @flynfury8363
      @flynfury8363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phillips Vision I thought a toggle switch would always be supplying power. I need the valve to open and stop trying to keep it open. Same thing for close. I don’t want to burn up the motor if it’s always trying to make the valve move in one direction or the other. I hope that makes sense.

    • @PhillipsVision

      I don’t think it did. A momentary switch is in a default open position. When you push it the circuit is closed causing the 12volts to pass through. Only the 12volt power is connected to the switch, and the switch allows the power to reach the starter when pressed.

      Pac Man it should be pretty much the same setup. I’m not a car stereo guy but would think it’s the same. The toggle is basically connecting/disconnecting the power from the device, in your case the amp. You should have 12v going to the amp, running through a fuse and the toggle. Next, ground your amp on the chassis.
