The saddest irony was that F1 lost 2 greats when Senna died: Ayrton and Bruno. Bruno's dad died shortly after in a motorcycle crash, so Bruno was barred from karting. Bruno lost 10 years of vital development time. But at least Senna Jr raced in F1.

As a brazilianman, it was impossbile for me to not realize: Bruno drove two copies of Ayrton cars. The Renault Lotus and the Williams PDVSA had homage liveries from the JPS lotus and Rothmans Williams. Add to this the helmet. Its really heart touching.

Bruno Senna is one of the most curious cases in Formula One. You know, hindsight is 20/20 when we talk about the Brawn GP saga, but IMO Senna wouldn't have fared better than Barrichello, let alone Button in the same Mercedes-powered BGP001. He wasn't given a fair shot in HRT, because the team was dead last in financial terms compared to Lotus Racing and Virgin, who had the backing of Milliionaires in Tony Fernandez and Richard Branson. At Renault it wasn't better either and they could've put Grosjean instead if they wanted to, but considering how something similar wrecked RoGro's GP2 title ambitions in 2009 (he was leading in the standings before he was called up to replace Nelson Piquet Jr., which led to Nico Hülkenberg taking it instead) I guess it was for the best. And his stint at Williams was doomed from the start - Maldonado's sponsors (chiefly PDVSA, the Venezuela's state owned oiled company) were pumping most of the money and Bottas' manager was Toto Wolff, who also happened to be a shareholder in the team at the time. I'd also argue that by taking the surname of his mother, Viviane, perhaps it did him more harm than good as it was mentioned earlier in the video with other second generation drivers - those were big shoes to fill and the expectations and pressure are even higher. Just look at Mick Schumacher - the constant compairsions to his legendary father maybe were detrimental to his development as driver and to carve his own path (it does not help the fact the current state Michael is in for nearly 10 years). But then again the Senna name is a sponsorship magnet - would Bruno had gone as far as he did had he gone under the name of Bruno Lalli instead? My guess would be that he would've been forgotten quickly.
That ten year Gap hurt Bruno more than anything. just experience that he would never get back. Was he a good driver? For sure he was but it is almost impossible to try and catch up a ten year gap in such a short amount of time and sadly Bruno proved that. Still, he made it, did it, and proved he was good enough to be there and for a few years we got to see that "name" and "Helmet" back in F1 that we nostalgia buffs longed for. I think he did incredibly well seeing he started at such a mature age and having such a famous last name in F1 motorsport to live up to can be a blessing and a curse.
Bruno also helped develop the McLaren Senna, while I get that's probably due to the name, this video helped me understand he did have success in endurance categories
One simple way to measure Bruno's potential is to ask yourself this question, how many modern F1 drivers have started their racing career at 20 and go on to have a decent outing in F1 all before 30?
Bruno was a massive what if since it would have been great to see what he could have done if that dark day in 1994 never happened. Ayrton and Jim Clark feel like the biggest what ifs in the world of F1 to me. He was a bit on the unlucky side in his career considering there is a number of instances where he misses the chance for the team he joins to be competitive but at the same time, he didn't impress enough with his 2011 and 2012 seasons really showing that although, he was unlucky to not have enough time to familiarise himself in the environment with those teams too. I didn't get to see Bruno that much since I stopped watching F1 in 2011 since I had other hobbies keeping me busy during that time. That did mean I missed the amazing 2012 season but it is what it is. At least I did get to see all of 2009 which is still my favourite season. Since your last video, I have been watching a good amount of videos about NASCAR and it is pretty interesting to learn just how different it is when compared to the motorsport I am more familiar. Plus, there are some pretty good videos about NASCAR too. We also learnt that Aston Martin will get a works deal with Honda in 2026 which is pretty huge for the Silverstone based team since this will be their first works deal in their history which is a great thing to see since I do have a strong affinity for the Silverstone team considering Jordan's amazing 1999 season and Force India being my favourite team until they became Racing Point.

neither clark nor senna were what-ifs. if clark had lived, maybe he'd have 2 more titles, but he was becoming older. senna was even older than that, he already wasn't on it in 94 compared to 93, plus there's no way he would have beaten schumacher in 94 or 95
I think there was a lot of expectation on Bruno as he carried the Senna name. He must have felt that weight on his shoulders. Being in the right place at the right time is also very important in F1. The best drivers always exceed expectation in cars that are not very good....that is what gets them noticed. Unfortunately, Bruno didn't do that in F1.

An overall very good performance given the difficult circumstances if not for the bad luck that impeded his abilities and masked the potential outcomes through no fault of his own. Truly deserved better opportunities to show his colours. Could have been great .
What else do you expect an uncle to say? Sometimes it’s just poetry. Bruno, unlike Ayrton, had to deal with the public’s doubts and fans’ high expectations. In the end, they are different characters and to expect high results just because of genealogy isn’t rational.
Button would have absolutely trounced him in 2009 had he gotten the drive, probably would have been similar to Albon’s time at red bull, occasional flashes of brilliance, but usually fighting at the lower end of the points
I think that’s a fair assessment. Even then, that still provides a Senna with a solid midfield reputation, possibly worthy of staying on, or maybe a shot for the vacant seats at Renault, or Williams.
Hard to live up to a legendary name like Senna. Doesn't help that he drove for some terrible teams, but the pressure also got to him. Same thing that's happening with Schumachers son, although he has a better chance of coming back to f1...
47:00 Senna cost Kobayashi a podium in Valencia 2012… Kamui was running 4th before his first pitstop, Sauber lost him a place in the pits to Raikkonen with a slow stop, both were stuck in traffic for multiple laps and got jumped by Alonso. Kimi finally got through, and Kamui was following him when Senna closed the door. It was a 50/50 incident, where Kamui should’ve been more patient, and Bruno should’ve been a bit smarter with his driving. It still hurts me just thinking about that race… and that incident!

Perez: 2 podiums / Maldonado: 1 GP win Kamui & Bruno both needed something during that mid-season period, to stay relevant in F1 silly season (2013 race-seat) conversations… in the end Kobayashi’s home podium was amazing, but he still got screwed politically.
"Pledora" twice on this video didn't get that, it flew past me, isn't it plethora? I was not going anything but first the Tyrrell pronunciation then the Chris Amon pronunciation, now plethora. You write great scripts and you have a nice formula here, no pun intended, but the few oddities are hilarious. Bruno's junior career does look somewhat impressive. I do think he earned a seat on the basis of no karting. Chandhok in the end proved to be better than Senna jnr. Petrov was bad, so he did not cover himself in glory. Maldonado was bad yet Bruno was worse, the car was clearly better than the Ferrari. Bruno got more chances than your average driver. It did not work for him, it does not work out for most. Outside f1 he again got more chances than he deserved, not only he was slower than his teammates he made a few big blunders especially on endurance.
I've been watching your videos for a few days now and I'm happily another subscriber. In this video I'll echoe what many mentioned in saying that if not for those 10 years "lost" he probably would have lived up to his uncle's prediction, considering he managed to still get to the top, even if not in the best possible form he could have considering his talent and how young he started, initially. Loved seeing the many people Ayrton was close to sprinkled through the video, like blink and you'll miss him Jo Ramirez at 6:11, one of the few at McLaren who managed to always be on good terms simultaneously with Ayrton and Alain and almost got them reconciled during "that" time at McLaren.

Had Ayrton survived, I'm not 100% sure it would've guaranteed Bruno's success. Ayrton would've gone on and on and on in racing, would he have found the time to manage Bruno's career too? Jos bit the bullet early and decided to turn his focus to Max. Similar happened to Mick Schumacher, although his dad's injury did scupper a lot of his development too.
I think even if Ayrton wasn’t directly involved in Bruno’s career, his survival would still mean a better racing education for Bruno, one without losing a decades worth of experience in karts and any other lower formulae.
Always saw him him in the same vein as the hopeless Piquet Jnr. Trading on the name which incidentally wasn't even his name but his mum's MAIDEN name. Think you're good enough? Then do it under your own name NOT trading on Ayrton's legacy.

Don't think he could ever live up to the expectations tbh (who could in fairness). However, he did have a successful endurance career. Considering his late Starr, I think he did OK tbh. Yes his name opened some doors, but equally that came with certain pressures.
I had to replay that clip of people rubbing their hands several times. Coming second to Pantano, who had 7 seasons in F2, was equivalent to winning the championship. While Bruno was not going to be a superstar , he certainly would have taken a win in the Brawn. With a full career, I think he’d be a Hulkenberg level driver. He was quick and much more consistent that Maldonado (yes, not a high bar).
Hey so here's something that is kind of related. So in HS I was friends with the family of a very famous NBA star. Very humble and great family. The HOF NBA player and household name in NBA circles also went to the high school 40 years ago. All of his kids were skilled at basketball but it was always a dagger hanging over their head about their fathers legacy. It sucked because the sons and daughters were extremely talented but their father had such a huge shadow. Fantastic family but it was always annoying hearing people say "well lets see how son stacks up to his father". Although I do think talent is genetic, to make it to a league or pro team not only requires skill but also luck. What is the talent pool like? Who are you networking with? Are you marketing yourself well are all things athletes need to consider if they want to make it to a NBA team, F1 Team, Premier League etc. Basically you can have all the talent in the world and still not get in. How many drivers are waiting in the wings for a driver to retire? Even if a spot opens up maybe a pay driver will take the spot?
Also, Willams should have kept senna instead of keeping money Maldonado and then hiring a over the hill Massa afterwards. Would have been better for them long term. Just imagine him with that consistency in that front running 2014 car
Bruno was a decent enough driver, but he just doesn't have that 'Special' in him..... that that aura that his uncle had. Nothing similar about the two unless you just count their relation.

How can you, as a racing fan say, “Ayrton was faster than Bruno.” Both drove in totally different eras. Ayrtons driving style would not work well in most of the cars that Bruno drove. Ayrton is fast, but his driving style is “stabby” he stabs the throttle mid corner to get his car rotated and also to keep his turbo spinning fast. It worked for his time but that’ll definitely spin any formula car, say after 1999.
The end of this raised a similiar thought I had in regards to Vettel at Ferrari. If Michael didn’t have that accident, how much of a difference could that've had in Michael just being around to offer Seb the guidance of being in that cockpit and dealing with the challenges of competing for a title with Ferrari.
It’s a great point, and you could argue the same with Mick Schumacher too. Would he have been less crash-prone with Michael in his corner? It’s no guarantee as having Mario around didn’t assist Michael Andretti in 1993.
Bruno is, until present time, a world class driver and a front runner at WEC. But i still thinking he's not Formula 1 material. Of course he's milles ahead of a good chunk of drivers that made it to the series purely on money bases. The true brazillian lost potential on 2000s is Lucas Di Grassi. Just think Lucas achieved a 3rd at the 2008 GP2 season despite missing the first 3 rounds!
It always baffled me how a driver like di Grassi never got a fair shot in F1. 3 consecutive top 3 finishes in GP2 showed he was no slouch (including like you say that 2008 season, I believe he was even in with a shot at the title that year too!). But always in the wrong place at the wrong time with no vacancies, and one year with Virgin wasn’t the place to show off your talents.
@@TheMobileChicane I believe this early 2000's generation to be the one with the most diamonds F1 missed: Di Grassi, Nick Cassidy, Sam Bird, Loic Duval, Simon Pagenaud, even Robert Wickens and Josef Newgarden even though their carreers took off for real after 2010... F1 definitelly need to go back to the number of 12+ teams.

the biggest thing that happened to the "Senna legacy" was Barichello. Senna considered him as a future champ. what has he done? sold his soul to Ferrari for money and being the eternal #2 of Senna's worst ennemy. Barichello could've continued the Brazilian legacy but decided to become Shitmaker's koochie. 🤮. Bruno just got too much pressure to make it to the top. it was a tough task and he didn't deliver. i don't blame him, it's difficult to achieve as much as Ayrton. at least he wasn't bad. just a medium quality driver.

Jim Clark is definitely another of those. Not just his tragic passing, but the unreliability of the Lotus that denied him more results.

Button would have absolutely trounced him in 2009 had he gotten the drive, probably would have been similar to Albon’s time at red bull, occasional flashes of brilliance, but usually fighting at the lower end of the points
I think that’s a fair assessment. Even then, that still provides a Senna with a solid midfield reputation, possibly worthy of staying on, or maybe a shot for the vacant seats at Renault, or Williams.

47:00 Senna cost Kobayashi a podium in Valencia 2012… Kamui was running 4th before his first pitstop, Sauber lost him a place in the pits to Raikkonen with a slow stop, both were stuck in traffic for multiple laps and got jumped by Alonso. Kimi finally got through, and Kamui was following him when Senna closed the door. It was a 50/50 incident, where Kamui should’ve been more patient, and Bruno should’ve been a bit smarter with his driving.
It still hurts me just thinking about that race… and that incident!
At least Kamui got his podium at Suzuka, I’m sure he would’ve traded a Valencia podium for that in a heartbeat!

Kamui & Bruno both needed something during that mid-season period, to stay relevant in F1 silly season (2013 race-seat) conversations… in the end Kobayashi’s home podium was amazing, but he still got screwed politically.

"Pledora" twice on this video didn't get that, it flew past me, isn't it plethora? I was not going anything but first the Tyrrell pronunciation then the Chris Amon pronunciation, now plethora. You write great scripts and you have a nice formula here, no pun intended, but the few oddities are hilarious.
Bruno's junior career does look somewhat impressive. I do think he earned a seat on the basis of no karting.
Chandhok in the end proved to be better than Senna jnr. Petrov was bad, so he did not cover himself in glory. Maldonado was bad yet Bruno was worse, the car was clearly better than the Ferrari. Bruno got more chances than your average driver. It did not work for him, it does not work out for most. Outside f1 he again got more chances than he deserved, not only he was slower than his teammates he made a few big blunders especially on endurance.
I've been watching your videos for a few days now and I'm happily another subscriber.
In this video I'll echoe what many mentioned in saying that if not for those 10 years "lost" he probably would have lived up to his uncle's prediction, considering he managed to still get to the top, even if not in the best possible form he could have considering his talent and how young he started, initially.
Loved seeing the many people Ayrton was close to sprinkled through the video, like blink and you'll miss him Jo Ramirez at 6:11, one of the few at McLaren who managed to always be on good terms simultaneously with Ayrton and Alain and almost got them reconciled during "that" time at McLaren.

Had Ayrton survived, I'm not 100% sure it would've guaranteed Bruno's success. Ayrton would've gone on and on and on in racing, would he have found the time to manage Bruno's career too? Jos bit the bullet early and decided to turn his focus to Max. Similar happened to Mick Schumacher, although his dad's injury did scupper a lot of his development too.
I think even if Ayrton wasn’t directly involved in Bruno’s career, his survival would still mean a better racing education for Bruno, one without losing a decades worth of experience in karts and any other lower formulae.

Don't think he could ever live up to the expectations tbh (who could in fairness). However, he did have a successful endurance career. Considering his late Starr, I think he did OK tbh. Yes his name opened some doors, but equally that came with certain pressures.
I had to replay that clip of people rubbing their hands several times. Coming second to Pantano, who had 7 seasons in F2, was equivalent to winning the championship. While Bruno was not going to be a superstar , he certainly would have taken a win in the Brawn. With a full career, I think he’d be a Hulkenberg level driver. He was quick and much more consistent that Maldonado (yes, not a high bar).
Hey so here's something that is kind of related.
So in HS I was friends with the family of a very famous NBA star. Very humble and great family. The HOF NBA player and household name in NBA circles also went to the high school 40 years ago. All of his kids were skilled at basketball but it was always a dagger hanging over their head about their fathers legacy. It sucked because the sons and daughters were extremely talented but their father had such a huge shadow. Fantastic family but it was always annoying hearing people say "well lets see how son stacks up to his father".
Although I do think talent is genetic, to make it to a league or pro team not only requires skill but also luck. What is the talent pool like? Who are you networking with? Are you marketing yourself well are all things athletes need to consider if they want to make it to a NBA team, F1 Team, Premier League etc.
Basically you can have all the talent in the world and still not get in. How many drivers are waiting in the wings for a driver to retire? Even if a spot opens up maybe a pay driver will take the spot?
Also, Willams should have kept senna instead of keeping money Maldonado and then hiring a over the hill Massa afterwards. Would have been better for them long term. Just imagine him with that consistency in that front running 2014 car

Bruno was a decent enough driver, but he just doesn't have that 'Special' in him..... that that aura that his uncle had. Nothing similar about the two unless you just count their relation.
Inadvertent sending that email Kolles must have been one of the most awkward things that ever happened in his life.
Great stuff as always. I was always fascinated how Bruno only started rolling with it aged 20, guess you can do anything you put your mind to as long as you have the Will Power and a multi-million backing :D

How can you, as a racing fan say, “Ayrton was faster than Bruno.”
Both drove in totally different eras.
Ayrtons driving style would not work well in most of the cars that Bruno drove. Ayrton is fast, but his driving style is “stabby” he stabs the throttle mid corner to get his car rotated and also to keep his turbo spinning fast.
It worked for his time but that’ll definitely spin any formula car, say after 1999.

The end of this raised a similiar thought I had in regards to Vettel at Ferrari. If Michael didn’t have that accident, how much of a difference could that've had in Michael just being around to offer Seb the guidance of being in that cockpit and dealing with the challenges of competing for a title with Ferrari.
It’s a great point, and you could argue the same with Mick Schumacher too. Would he have been less crash-prone with Michael in his corner? It’s no guarantee as having Mario around didn’t assist Michael Andretti in 1993.

Bruno is, until present time, a world class driver and a front runner at WEC. But i still thinking he's not Formula 1 material. Of course he's milles ahead of a good chunk of drivers that made it to the series purely on money bases.
The true brazillian lost potential on 2000s is Lucas Di Grassi. Just think Lucas achieved a 3rd at the 2008 GP2 season despite missing the first 3 rounds!
It always baffled me how a driver like di Grassi never got a fair shot in F1. 3 consecutive top 3 finishes in GP2 showed he was no slouch (including like you say that 2008 season, I believe he was even in with a shot at the title that year too!). But always in the wrong place at the wrong time with no vacancies, and one year with Virgin wasn’t the place to show off your talents.
@@TheMobileChicane I believe this early 2000's generation to be the one with the most diamonds F1 missed: Di Grassi, Nick Cassidy, Sam Bird, Loic Duval, Simon Pagenaud, even Robert Wickens and Josef Newgarden even though their carreers took off for real after 2010... F1 definitelly need to go back to the number of 12+ teams.

It’s a slightly muddy statistic - since post 2021, Verstappen has technically been powered along by RBPT engines, even though those are very closely related to the Hondas

Might be early for this request but I’d love a video on Kevin Magnussen’s career so far, or on the weird possible transfers of the mid 2010s, I know it’s all he said she said but Magnussen has been linked to Force India, Toro Rosso, Williams, and I believe even Ferrari at one point, think it’d make for a fun one 💪

the biggest thing that happened to the "Senna legacy" was Barichello. Senna considered him as a future champ. what has he done? sold his soul to Ferrari for money and being the eternal #2 of Senna's worst ennemy. Barichello could've continued the Brazilian legacy but decided to become Shitmaker's koochie. 🤮. Bruno just got too much pressure to make it to the top. it was a tough task and he didn't deliver. i don't blame him, it's difficult to achieve as much as Ayrton. at least he wasn't bad. just a medium quality driver.

That's unfair, as with a lot if drivers in the past, he never really had a competitive car, that would get him in the points, never mind winning!
