Texas has the best food in the United States! Thanks for coming to our wonderful state and from the looks of the videos you guys enjoyed yourselves.
when i was in the UK we went to Edinburgh and there is a place called Tex Mex and it got my seal of approval and i am from texas. i dont know if it is still there but look it up and if it is check it out
Princess H was playing to the camera in this video.
Join us here in Houston Texas.
You must have filmed this months ago. We are not wearing sleeveless now.
Chips and salsa are always complimentary at Mexican style restaurants.
I must add some clarification here: should you ever walk into a Mexican-style restaurant and chips+salsa are not provided complimentary, that’s a sign you don’t want to have dinner there.
Dead's second comment is exactly mine: "always complimentary AND IF IT'S NOT, LEAVE." Actually, TexMex joint's biggest expenditure is CHEESE. Meats are second. And I find most TexMex joints have roughly similar meals. The distinguishing feature is always chips & hot-sauce. Maybe 2 or 3!
And you can a should judge the restaurant on the quality of the chips
you forgot to mention that you should not just walk in eat the chips and salsa then leave
they are part of your meal not complimentary
however if the chips are bad or there are not chips that is a place you are sure you do not want to eat
@@111smd TexMex Etiquette 101. EXACTLY what 111smd said. I have sat at the bars and ONLY ordered chips & salsa... and plenty o' ice water or iced tea. Tip those folks for delivering goodness to me.
I've lived in 34 places, including England, but i lived in Texas for about 25 years, and over 20 of those were in San Antonio (the rest in Austin), and I know exactly where Mr. H and Friends are on the Riverwalk. I currently live in Colorado, and just salivated the entire time during this video--I so miss San Antonio, Tex-Mex, HEB, Taco Cabana, Bill Miller, turnarounds, frontage roads. I've literally been around the world, and Texas is something unto it's own--there's no place like Texas. I'll be planning a trip back to San Antonio tomorrow.
I'm born and raised San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. I'm proud of this land and very glad to hear someone so well-travelled has that perspective. Also just now learning that other places don't have turn arounds or frontage roads. I can't even imagine.
Pro tip from a Texican: pour a little salsa on the rice and scoop a spoonful of refried beans into the rice and enjoy! Also pairs well with tortillas!
I always mix all of my rice and beans together and eat about half of them on the chips.
Amen! From a 6 gen Texan!
I don't do the salsa, but I always mix my rice and beans :)
Ah sam...you're a foodie after my own heart. Love your comment.
And scoop it with your chip. Add a dollop of guacamole and put a jalapeno slice on top.
Being a Native Born Texan, I would just like to say welcome to my beloved State. Y'all could spend the next 2 years exploring my beautiful state and you still would not have experienced all of it. Just remember, once upon a time, we were our own country, The Republic of Texas. God bless y'all!
I am a 75 year old native of San Antonio and I still get just as excited as you are when I get a good plate of Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is its own food group. My first restaurant dinner was at La Fonda on Main when I was one year old. I had refried beans wrapped in corn tortillas, still one of my favorites.
Wow, you must have tasted my Grandmother's cooking. She worked there for many years. Trained the owner's son so he could open La Fonda at Oakhills. Needles to say we learned from her and my mother how to cook. Miss them both dearly.❤
Nothing quite like Tex-Mex fajitas on a sizzling plate!
Texan here. The green in the enchilada sauce comes from a base of tomatillos, which are tangy but not spicy. Red sauces are usually tomato based. The heat in green (verde) sauce come from the addition of peppers which are typically green and can be mild or spicy depending on the species, so green doesn't always mean hot.. The most common peppers used in restaurants are usually either jalapeños or Serranos. Restaurants usually shy away from the super hot peppers as only a few brave souls enjoy the intense heat. I'm glad you have enjoyed ourTexas cuisine!
My dad was a native Texan and I've lived here since '86. Grew up with red sauce enchiladas and picante and always associated green salsa with New Mex-Mex rather than Tex-Mex.
I'm a huge fan of green enchiladas and salsa mostly due to the long gone Tia's Tex-Mex chain, specifically the store in Richardson.
Tomato is optional in enchilada sauce. The red comes from chili power (ground chilis).
@@fatman7817 True. I didn’t consider enchilada sauce. I was only thinking of salsas at the time.
@@bretcantwell4921we have Tia’s in SA. You should come down here! 😊
SERIOUSLY GET CAST IRON PLATE, PUT IN YOUR OVEN AT HOME WITH PEPPERS, ONIONS, SEASONED STEAK. bring out when sizzling hot. Mexican rice is so easy to make at home
My mother met a couple from England, befriended them, and invited them to Beaumont Texas for a week long visit. I took them out to eat Tex Mex, and had them get mixed fajitas (steak chicken shrimp). They had never had Tex Mex before, which made fajitas perfect. I said "Take a tortilla, and build it however you like it!" You like steak, with grilled onions, refried beans and cheese? Build it like that! Want to do chicken with sour cream, chip salsa and some guacamole? Go for it! Because they could put what they liked on it, and essentially built their own fajitas, it took all the pressure off me ordering something they wouldn't like! That, BBQ and Cajun food were their favorite foods in Texas! So glad y'all loved the Tex Mex!!
Our Baby H is a food savage. She will not be denied! lol 😊
Mr. H has run into the classic “fajita building dilemma.” Counter to any human’s intuition, you have to scale back every component by a third to get everything in 😂
Truly... lol
I also add the sour cream and guac straight onto the tortilla before adding anything else. It saves from having to scoop out my spoon trying to add a dab at the end.
It's not dip. It's sahhhhlsa! 😂❤❤❤ tex mex is the best! Especially in Texas 😋🥰🥰
Half of my family is in San Antonio, so I've been there A LOT!! I'm so happy y'all experienced it. Looks like baby H loved it! My 1st Lil grand is almost her same age. Just precious! (My 2nd Lil nug is due in Feb) 🤯🥰🥰🥰😇
My grandma would have joined you in enjoying a giant margarita! Even in her later years when she had gotten so tiny and the margarita was so huge, she still grinned from ear to ear as she sipped it through the straw. I miss her. And now I want Mexican food!
The Riverwalk is fun! You got great weather and great food, awesome to see how much you enjoyed America. Shout from a fan in St Louis, Missouri
The Riverwalk is tourist food not real texmex at all
There’s both on the river walk. Some are really good and others are dumbed down for tourist. There’s literally award winning restaurants on the river walk.
Did anyone else catch Baby H’s tiny, little “thank you” to the waitress?
And that when the chili pepper burn got to her mama, Baby H started giving her frijoles refritos to quench the fire? (The fat in the frijoles can do that, just as long as the frijoles themselves are not overly spicy.)
Alana is going to grow up to be a total foodie and perhaps a famous chef ❤
In 10 years she will have her own channel!
@@baddayguygamingIn 10 years she will be about 12 so maybe 20 years 👍
Refried beans are to keep the rice from falling off of your fork. 😄
Yeah, I'm hoping they pick up on the proper etiquette for eating Tex-Mex. And let that child have some salsa.
Yup, gotta mix them together to eat them the right way.
@@FriedPi-mc5yt
Or you can get crazy and pour the queso over the rice and stir. 😋 😋 😋 😋
@@baskervillebee6097 Crazy confirmed. LOL!!
@@FriedPi-mc5ytHeresy! You never mix them together... except on your fork as you're eating them.
You DEFINITELY should come back to Texas!! You KNOW Texas is HUGE and there is so much more to see!...and of course ...EAT! I hope that your trip encourages MANY BRITS to head to Texas!
You’re so lucky your little one is an eater. So tough when a kid is picky or refuses to eat. Congrats.
Enjoying this series. But also love the cooking with Mrs. H
Thank you. More cooking coming after the Texas videos.
I am so glad you got some authentic Tex-Mex. All Mexican restaurants are judged first by their chips and salsa. Yes, they are complementary. Here in the US, Tex-Mex is an official food group. 😂
Yes please come back to Texas. Texas is like visiting 4 other states. Texas has a lot to offer.
I lived in San Antonio for 8 years in the 80’s and I STILL miss the food. Very happy for you enjoying TexMex on the Riverwalk. Great video, as always!
That margarita looks incredible! Everything looks great. Yum.
Welcome to Texas just the beginning of Greatness .
I love chips and salsa. Tex Mex is a favorite for sure! Makes me happy ya'll liked it too!
If the salsa is bad just get up and leave
You two are hilarious. Look at those expressions. Mr H looks possessed. 🤔😫😅😁
He was lol
Hope you had a good time here in America.
Most people here are generally friendly.
As in other places, there are occasional a-holes, but most of us welcome people from other parts of thw world.
🇺🇸♥️🇬🇧
I love how the two of you refer to salsa as dip.🤭Too cute!🥰
When I visit TX and want to take in great Tex-Mex food I like to visit a place that isn't a chain where they can get away from the little things that make authentic TM delicioso! Looks pretty good and great to see your enjoyment of a Tex-Mex day starting with the breakfast tacos!
If you really want to get the full experience hopefully you can get a hold of some barbacoa, al pastor and lengua tacos!
And birria!
...thanks forgot that one@@catherinelw9365
Only thing missing was queso! Glad you guys enjoyed it!
I'm a San Antonio native and we never eat queso
@@chelleroberson3222that’s sad! Lol it’s awesome! I prefer white personally. I wonder if that’s a San Antonio thing because in Dallas it’s practically a food group.
@@ErinStev64yeh Fort Worth here. Queso is on most tables here.
Cringed when the waitress passed the fajitas in front of the kid.
I have just loved watching your channel. being a true Texan seeing your reactions to our way of life is a breathe of fresh air
Chicken Enchiladas Verde is my favorite ❤ Great choice!!
Appreciate y’all coming to my city. Hope your stay was great. I’m glad a fan (fan’s wife) introduced themselves and was very polite.
My Mexican food, not Taco Bell, tip: mix the beans and the rice. The rice can be a little dry by itself and the beans can be a little runny.
So glad you did San Antonio! It’s the jewel of Texas. The River Walk is lit up at night with all the colors of the rainbow, including the boats. You have to take a night boat ride on the river and a carriage ride nearby. It’s amazing!!
Bloody love our Brits 🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸❤️
👍🙂❤
Mr., Mrs., and Lil' H munching on chips. I'm so glad ya'll are having a good time. Thanks for sharing your videos and adventures.
👍🙂❤
Dang I cook texmex weekly, now I know why my wife stays with me after watching you guys.
She married well my friend
Get me some tacos Al carbon with some pico, guacamole rice and beans and a cold beer. I’m in heaven 😊
I just re-watched their Florida Taco Bell taste test. I am ready to see their reaction to real Tex-Mex!
12:25 trust me... the more heat you eat... the more you want, as your tolerance naturally builds you begin to taste a lot more flavor than just heat, it's a marvelous journey.
glad y'all enjoyed our city hope y'all got to enjoy a lot of the historical sites down town n our food
Mrs H needed to put some guacamole and sour cream on top of the enchiladas. Takes it to the next level 🥑🌶️💥
Im so happy yall enjoyed Texas and the whole American experience
Y'all are becoming Americanized I love it. Now you understand why it's easy to gain weight we have so many options with so many flavors. It's scary to be this blessed.
Been years since I was there, but best food I had in San Antonio was near the farmers market @ Mi Tierra.
Your daughter was trying so hard to fork the rice. Totally frustrated while you guys enjoyed your delicious food. I was rolling on the floor laughing! She's adorable!
America is a big wonderful country full of delicious food and decent people. It's rewarding to see people from outside America enjoying all we have instead of bashing or trying to undermine America. Don't forget to exercise some of that food away so you can make many more vids.
I love how adventurous you are. We have always been that way too. Now our kids are teaching our grandkids to love adventure too. Baby H is learning to be adventurous too. She is the sweetest and happiest little girl. I know you said she didn't eat like she would at home but it's amazing how well she did with all the new places, foods and people. Thanks for taking us along on your adventure.
I'm glad you loved the food! What a lovely family!
At this point y'all might just have to look into moving to Texas. Yeah, our summers are awful, but we have the infrastructure to deal with it, and the 7 months of the year that isn't summer are lovely. Plus, you've already discovered why we put up with the summers: the food.
I always mix the beans with the rice , it's so good when they're well made .
When you come back to San Antonio, plan on going to Rosario's for Mexican, and make sure to make a reservation. It's about a mile southeast of the Riverwalk and is AMAZING! All of the best San Antonio foods are away from the Riverwalk in IMO as the Riverwalk is very touristy and chain food oriented. There is a long list of incredible restaurants that San Antonio has to offer that are not on the Riverwalk. BTW, that margarita look soooo good! It look like it has orange or orange liquor added.
Love downtown San Antonio. Fun place to hang out and visit, especially in the summer time.
The great thing about Mexican and/or Tex-Mex food is that there is no wrong,, You can add/combine anything to anything,, It's totally up to you.
The blessing of living in San Antonio is that there is so many great Tex-Mex restaurants. Also besides refried beans we have two types of beans with liquid. Charro and Borracho made with Shiner Bock. The green enchilada sauce could be salsa verde or a tomatillo sauce
Your baby girl so cute she put her drink on the table to talk about it too 😊
Oh yeah San Antonio my home town 🤘 hopefully y'all got to try BARBACOA TACOS and Big Red for breakfast
I sometimes get barbacoa tacos for breakfast, or a breakfast plate with barbacoa.Inlike to put the onions and cilantro with tomatilla sauce. I love Las Palapas for their beef fajitas. I just go to the local Mexican places by me.Dont go to the River Walk.We go to Lockhart for BBQ when my sister and her husband come to town.
Check out Mi Tierra next time you’re in San Antonio. You’ve also gotta try the queso when you’re at a Tex Mex restaurant.
I cannot wait to see this because I know you absolutely loved it.
I'm glad y'all had a wonderful time. I must say Alana stole the show in places. LoL. Cheers from Tennessee
Yes! Go back to Texas! But at some time be sure you see the Mountain West.
Alana is a cutie!
If you ever get the chance, try New Mexico red chile enchiladas! Mmmm
Love your videos. I'm from San Antonio and I'm a big Tex-Mex and BBQ fan and really enjoy watch you 3 try places I enjoy eating at.
While fajitas have been served in Mexico for a long time, the were "brought" to the US, by a lady named Ninfa Lorenzo in Houston about 50 years ago. So glad you enjoyed the River Walk in S.A. I'll bet Mrs. H was a happy gal if she finished that margarita!
Oh my God, Alana is so cute!!! Glad ya'll had a great time in my home state.
Welcome ya'll. I live in S.A. Im so glad you like our food! The riverwalk still has Christmas lights up & I hope you get to enjoy those too. 🇨🇱
Looks like Alana is getting back to normal when she eats. 😁 A good beef fajita is really hard to beat!! Glad you picked another good restaurant and enjoyed it this much.
Aww I was in San Antonio in late October and didn’t get to go to the River Walk. It was so hot (95F) and I was just too busy and hot to do that but I want to come back and do it. So happy you liked the Tex-Mex. 😄
Y'all are so cute and so complimentary!
If you want to return to Texas, go in the spring when the bluebonnets are in full bloom! Spectacular scenery!
YES! Give the babies some salsa. Texans put it in their babies bottles! I promise it WILL expand her taste pallet. I promise…babies will go back for more voluntarily.
Mrs. H, a key ingredient in the green sauce of your green chicken enchilada is the tomatillo. It's a berry native to Mexico that is encased in a paper like husk, and once the husk is peeled away, it resembles a small green tomato. Tomatillos are used in many Mexican dishes. More than likely the zesty flavor Mr. H mentioned came from the tomatillo. My favorite go-to when I order on the menu at any Tex-Mex restaurant has to be the fajita followed by a brisket taco.
(Last comment, I promise)
Some advice for counteracting the heat of hot chilis: If the given establishment offers milk in its soft drink list, ask for it -- the casein in milk does wonders for dialing-down that temperature. Water (or any watery drink with no milk-content) will not help. Alternatively, if they have any kind of ice cream or yogurt dish in their dessert menu, order it and ask for it to be served with your main course
Also, I'm a Marylander. If you've yet to visit this small Mid-Atlantic state, please do come here on some future trip to the U.S. and sample our proudest culinary concoction: the crabcake sandwich. If you haven't been to Maine yet, I'd highly suggest adding that state for another future stateside culinary foray to try their signature sandwich: the lobster roll -- a very minimalistic submarine-style sandwich featuring lobster tail meat served either slathered in hot butter sauce or with a dipping bowl with that sauce in it. There are places in the "Down East" part of this state that serve this dish fresh-off-the-boat!
Just an avg day in Texas!
Hope you enjoyed your trip here.
Texas native here. Green enchiladas are one of my favorites. That looked delicious! The green sauce is from tomatillos - they are small, look like a green tomato, and grow in a husk. It’s rather tart.
As a native Texan I've been to that exact spot. There's an art form to loading up and eating that fajita. You have a unique style. I could tell you enjoyed it ❤
I love fajitas, because you build it the way you want it…. They give you everything you could want on it, and it’s always delicious 😊
Texas has everything. Glad you've had amazing experiences.
Next time you come to San Antonio you will need to eat 'Mi Tiera'a'. Oldest Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. Open 24/7. They serve the best breakfasts, lunch, and dinners. they have been in the same location for over 60 years. You'll find themmin the Mercado District.
STILL need to go up into The Tower! Nobody on TH-cam does it! So missing out! One of the best things about my city! Easily!
Can I even use more exclamation points!? 😆 When in town, DO IT! !!!!!
Friends of our family ran a couple of tex mex restaurants for decades. Mom o ce asked Janie if her family was from Mexico or Texas. Janie replied the border crossed us many times but we have never crossed the border. Love tex mex anytime.
I know exactly where you were!
Welcome to Texas ... the best state around. 🤩
Instead of going to the Riverwalk, you really need to try the mom and Pop restaurants on the south side of San Antonio. That is the BEST text mix!
taqueria guadalaja #1
Mr. and Mrs. H love y’all videos. I love Tex-Mex just seeing this video made me wanna go get Mexican food.
I have 2 best friends, since junior high. We all turned 40 within 2 weeks of each other. So we met up in Riesel TX where one friend lives to celebrate together. She took us to San Antonio and it was awesome. We ate so much great food, toured the city all day and ended our day at The Magic Time Machine. Food was great but the environment was so much fun. If you do go back, check it out. We had a blast.
I was just at the Riverwalk for a conference. It's it own world in the heart of the city.
Looks like you got starting TexMex fare. I love green enchiladas. Texas sized portions for sure.
I think you'd really love colorado in the fall! Plus, we have tons of great restaurants. Btw, green enchiladas are my favorite!
Loving the videos and visit during fall or winter .. the food and spice of the food hits nicely for the weather … great video ❤😊
You're in my home town! Very glad you are enjoying it.
I used to not like enchiladas, then my sister in law made me green enchiladas. I had 3 helpings lol. She stacked hers rather than rolled them though.
If y'all go back to San Antonio Riverwalk you should stay in the Druiry Inn, it's where I stayed when I traveled for work there regularly. I brought my family often. You can get a suite with a separate bedroom. They have complimentary full breakfast and they have a social every night where they serve something like tacos or spaghetti, which is also complimentary. Bring a babysitter so y'all can go enjoy some adult entertainment too. There's a comedy shop that's great, and several hockey tonks.
pro tortilla tip: fold a side in first, then roll it. That way you aren't spilling crap out the back. Plus all the gooey stuff gets forced to the back making the last bite heart-attack-inducing but so worth it.
Awesome that ya'll visited our home state! Hope you enjoyed your stay and please come back so many things to enjoy.
Let’s goooo finally San Antonio!
Native born Austinite here…. I can’t claim to be a teetotaler because I do drink alcohol once every couple years. Mostly, I abstain.
However, seeing that big margarita on your table… that just looks so good.
You 3 made some excellent choices for your first time typing tex-mex! I love enchiladas and cheese quesadillas, but steak fajitas were an excellent choice Mr.H! And this restaurant seemed to have some especially good quality ingredients for you to build the perfect fajita. Glad you guys enjoyed it! Hope you like your time in the US, and Texas!
Hey welcome to San Antonio. I just got off work hope you enjoyed your day.
Mr H said we have to come back here (to Texas). He meant to relocate there. Was just clarifying for him 😉
Hi to my favorite family across the pond. I lived in San Antonio for most of my life. Ritas is good I noticed you got a shiner. Shiner is a Texas brand the family migrated here from Germany then they started the brewery. Shiner is beloved by many of us down here and I love that it comes to German roots. With that little history lesson the surrounding areas of San Antonio as well as San Antonio itself has some amazing German roots. I wouldn't shy away from local breweries while you visit this area in Texas, most of them have restaurants inside of them. There in San Antonio should be Alamo brewing company and Freetail brewing. I know there's others but that's off the top of my head. Enjoy your stay as always God bless y'all!
I'm a Tex-Mex, born and raised in Texas. The way I eat fajitas is to put everything in the tortilla, including the rice and beans. A good margarita is just the standard drink. Nice video, and hurry back as soon as you can!
