Great content! Your truck came with Trailer sway control as well I assume. Mine did but it’s a Chevy. (Aside from the WDH you hooked up) I realize this vid is older. What’s your Payload?
Mine specifically: Payload 1444lbs Conventional Trailer 8800lbs GVRW 7000lbs Curb weight 5556lbs The AT4’s tow the least of GMC 1/2 tons. The powertrain isn’t the issue, the suspension lift is.
Around 1500lbs. Airbags will help with load levelling and reduce body roll. They don’t increase the payload capacity. Replacing drivetrain and suspension components would be required to increase payload. But if you’re going to that, a 2500 HD version of the truck might be in order.
Standard tank and a trailer this size pretty much cuts range in half. Grades, avg speed and wind strength/direction play a big part too. I’ve had tailwinds on flat grades that allowed to me to stay at the speed limit with low rpms and high gear and saw pretty good mpg improvements.
I have been looking for a rack that would allow me to do that. The only ones I have seen work with ‘their’ box cover and not mine. I will check them out! Thanks!
Hi Don after watching your video it makes me wanna buy an RV , I recently purchase a SLT Sierra 1500 with the 10 speed trans , 5.3 engine , more or less what weight of an RV I should be looking for , thanks for the help and great video 👍
If you are looking for a conventional trailer or ‘pull’ trailer like mine. Consult your tow rating sticker in the door jamb. If it is a 2019+ Sierra, they’ll be a conventional trailer weight listed. It is usually recommended to tow under 80% of that number even though the truck is capable of more. So many variables with wind, raid conditions, etc. Towing a little lighter is safer. Your truck since it doesn’t have the AT4 lift, probably tows more.
Looks like it was Easy work for You and the Truck! I have a 2017 Sierra Denali with the 6.2L and I tow a 26FT Trailer (30FT with the A Frame), thing only weighs 6000lbs. Being a Prairie Dog myself I am subject to some nasty Crosswinds, I feel like the ass end of my truck is sliding around all over the place, I have a Weight Distribution hitch as well. If there's no wind its fine but any little bit at all I feel like I am all over the place, my truck and trailer are perfectly level so I don't know if there's anything else I can do or if there's underlying issue that compounds what I am feeling behind the wheel. I am thinking about trading the Truck in for a 3/4 Ton Diesel OR the Cheaper route would be to buy a smaller lower profile trailer that isn't such a wind sail.
I almost went with a 3/4 ton, but I don’t tow heavy frequently enough to justify it (at the moment anyway). A heavier duty truck will help though. Crosswinds are nuts here
Great video!! Thanks for doing this. I have the same truck however in black with the 20” tires. I am about to start towing a 27 foot Airstream 6,100 dry / 7,500 wet. The tongue weight for it will be 791 pounds base. Question, what is the hitch weight on your setup? Which WDH are tiny using? How much wheel travel and off road capability would you say you lost in installing airbags? Thanks in advance
Hey man, my tongue weight is about 850 lbs. I don’t know the brand of the WDH but it looks like it could be Curt. There are jounce bumpers in the bags, but I am not sure if I lost too much wheel travel. A bit probably is lost as well as keeping some air in the bags would firm up the suspension as it compresses. I am not a hardcore off roader….yet
Hey man, love your content. I have the same exact truck and installed the airbags last week before our trip through the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee with our travel trailer. Such a worthwhile upgrade. I tried searching your videos before posting this, so sorry if its a repeat question... but what tires are you running on the AT4? And you're just using a 1.5" spacer and no lift, right? Just the stock 2" lift? Thanks in advance.
Hey Matthew! Glad the air bags worked out for you! I am running the factory 18” Duratracs right now with the 1.5” spacers. I haven’t done a front lift yet.
Hey Don! We just picked up a new yukon at4 for the family. It's our first GM product any issues with your at4 engine wise? I'm hearing a lot of issues of lifters failing and rods bending.
Hi Nabil, I have heard the same but luckily no issues so far. I have owned 4 GM trucks and never had engine problems. However warranty will cover the problem if you experience it.
@@Donslife yeah I got the extended warranty just incase lol so far so good as of right now. Only have 500kms on it though so I don't expect anything failing this early.
Just to clarify. You get your truck hitched, level and airbags filled and then put on the WD bars? Will you please specify your order of everything. Thank you.
No problem: 1 - make sure your trailer is connected to the ball. Make sure your hitch is adjusted to the correct position so the trailer is putting weight on the hitch but still pretty level. 2 - put some air in the bags. I found 15 is good for my trailer. 3 - hook up your WD bars. I hope that helps. Just don’t adjust your airbags last since they will work against what the weight distribution system is trying to do.
I have basically the same truck (Denali without bags) and a very similar trailer. How was your sway in those high winds? I went to a anti-sway weight distribution hitch to help with wind because I was getting sway.
The cross winds were pretty crazy so I slowed down a little under the speed limit and kept a steady pull on the trailer. I could feel the wind still but thankfully the bars kept me from swaying. They did their job for sure!!
I think they can fit. The seats fold up pretty tight, the only thing is the under seat storage they may not like. My dog (60lbs) and two of my adult daughters have fit back there
Question for you, What length trailer is this? I know what my 2021 Silverado can tow weight wise, I just am not sure what length travel trailer i should be looking at. Would hate to get something too long and regret it.

Hi Don, thanks for the video. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that you had to move camp sites 3X, but I noticed you kept the truck attached to the trailer. Is that ok to leave the trailer attached to the truck or should you unhitch?
I unhitched every time immediately after parking. The footage you’ve seen is probably just before or after I moved. The sites are usually long enough that I can stay parked in front of the trailer. I recommend unhitching. Also if on a road trip and parking over night, I like to use the trailer hitch to take some strain off of the truck before driving the next day.
Sorry I’m new to towing with my 1/2 ton and air bags. But if I get all my measurements and air bag psi configured on level ground, can I add the air to the airbags and back the truck into the trailer when the ground isn’t level? Or should you always deflate the bags to the minimum and air up after the trailer and weight distribution hitch is attached?
Air is your last step on f using a weight distribution hitch, otherwise your WD hitch will be fighting the bags. Your 2nd scenario is correct. Also experimenting with pressure is fine until you figure which feels right. 15-30 for me is food on this truck with my heavy trailer. Some may need to go up to 40-60. It’s not advisable to go over 100.
@@Donslife okay awesome. I took my measurements with 5psi in each and then put the trailer on, then checked the measurements again and raised the rear to get 1/2” or less in the front. Then dropped them back down to 5psi and applied the WD hitch, and raised to get 1/2” in the front. My magic number was 40psi without anything in the bed and the trailer empty. I’m thinking I’ll need about 50psi once the truck and trailer are loaded. I also have a 2021 Sierra AT4, except mine has the 3.0L and isn’t as cool looking. Been stressing for months about this trip but this video has given me some relief, so thank you.
I got the exact same truck haven't put it to work yet how did the engine do plenty of power going up hills getting on the highway was a transmission searching for Gears or anything? Thanks in advance
Did well. I found that using towing mode actually works so much better with this 10 speed transmission. I found it was quite capable for a 1/2 ton truck
@@polandknight2012 sure it would be great, but the AT4 is not configurable with that ratio from the factory. At least when I was working on getting mine. The 10 speed helps too. This isn’t my forever truck either
What’s the tongue weight on that trailer setup? I’ve got the 2021 AT4 w/ the 3.0L diesel. Spec says 8,900lb towing & 890lb hitch weight. I’m wondering if I could go a bit higher on the hitch weight with the air bags & a distribution hitch?
My trailer is about 840 tongue weight. Bags, weight distribution hitch, etc - I wouldn't recommend exceeding any of the manufacturers maximum ratings. My video was about my experience getting very close to the maximum ratings for my specific truck. The only thing I would add is a sway control device and some tires with a higher load range. Otherwise it pulled as good as any in it's class and felt safer (more controller) with the bags and weight distribution hitch. Cheers!
I might be able to answer this coming summer. I don't feel I have done enough towing yet to produce accurate info. Also, I have the 6.2, not the Diesel
@@DonslifeI'm coming from a Superduty so I'm used to the tow mirrors but I've seen several complaints that GM mirrors causing blind spots. I wouldn't think the GM mirrors would cause anymore blind spots than the Superduty mirrors? I'm afraid I'll miss tow mirrors if I don't get them.
How did you get the side view on your screen? I have all the other views for hooking up the trailer and I can see the hitch while I'm moving but that's it. Maybe I have old software it's a 19 Denali.
I do, but it looked like your side cameras were activated as you were moving around the corner. I can use the different features while backing but not going forward.
@@Donslife The moment i go offroad the HUD gets extremely vibratey even driving down the coquihalla it can move around so i end up turning it off most of the time. That being said; when i give my dash a gentle smack near the HUD; barely moves. Smack it around the 8" Screen... Really moves around. Crazy.
I was wondering why you needed to add the airbags. With Max tow package you truck has 300lb heavier rear leaf springs , when properly adjusting your weight distribution hitch with the load distribution bars it will level the trailer just fine. I did install the airbag on my 2015 GMC serria because it wasnt a max tow model .Now have 2020 GMC w/ 6.2 3.42 max tow and my front side loading toy hauler is 30 ft 7000lbs ish wet. I have had no tow issues where I could not see this as a need. Not being condescending just curious about the reasoning ? Thanks you have a great program.
Makes a noticeable difference for me by reducing body roll and keeps things more stable with crosswinds. Something we have a lot of in the prairies. I never installed them to increase towing capacity. I installed them to stabilize the load and reduce sway. They are there to compliment the weight distribution hitch. I am pretty level too with the hitch set up before adding a little air to the bags. I wouldn’t care if I had them with my boat 5000-6000lbs. But my trailer loaded is about 7500+ with some cargo in the truck box. Smooth sailing ⛵️
Max is 8800 for my truck. I was about 80-85% including fuel and passengers. I tow the trailer dry too. The point of the video was to review towing at closer to max capacity. I wouldn’t and don’t promote unsafe towing.
I should’ve mentioned the trailer is on the light side for its length. Fibreglass construction and about 6400lbs dry. We bring lots of cargo in the SUV which tows the boat.
Hey Andrew, I decided to keep them on this trip. No issues, vibrations, etc. I took one off a month ago just to inspect everything and there was no issue with the little bit of thread locker I had applied. All the lugs were still at the amount I had torqued them too. Honestly (my opinion) is that because the spacer’s size I chose is so conservative and I am not rock climbing or towing all day, they are probably going to be fine and stay with these wheels.
Do you stilo have the resignators in?? Do you have a custom exaust or a preassmbled one?;switched from the 5 3 with true dual and want to get the 6.2 back to that sound. Yours is dead on outside.
Payload 1444lbs Conventional Trailer 8800lbs GVRW 7000lbs Curb weight 5556lbs The AT4’s tow the least of GMC 1/2 tons. The powertrain isn’t the issue, the suspension lift is. The F-150’s tow more if you need it. The Raptor’s tow less though.

@@jamespeters066 We had one, it was solid and reliable in a Yukon XL. But once we had the 6.2 in the next one and my Denail, we never went back. The power and the responsiveness was night and day.
@@Donslife I'm not one to tell anyone that they should do this or that, but I would suggest you google sway control and see how it could be beneficial. I believe Curt sells an add on sway control system for that hitch. That is a pretty long trailer for that truck and anti-sway seems appropriate.
Short answer - Yes I would trust it based on my experience and set up. The biggest drawback is small fuel tank. Tires with a better load range would be good too. I towed this trailer through the Rocky Mountains with my 2013 Denali 6.2 at least 10 times and it was fine. The 6 speed transmission was strong but annoying with very limited gear options.

About to buy a 2021 AT4. Was on the fence about which engine to buy. Ruled out the 3.0 and couldn’t decide between the 5.3 and 6.2. Why does the 5.3 have a higher tow rating than the 6.2.

I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 3.0 Duramax Diesel I do have bags and plan on getting a tune for my truck as well as soon as it releases.
It’s a job for the 2500 not the 1500. You’re close to a 100% of the max towing capacity with the trailer alone. I wouldn’t do it even though it would probably pull the extra weight. Not a safe move.
😂 what ever the front fan setting is will affect the airflow into the backseat through the console. The back vents do not blow as hard as the front vents do.
If there is poor airflow it may not be programmed correctly from the factory. Had to have rear vents reprogrammed on my 2020 HD AT4 so could be the same in the 1500’s.

That exhasut sounds pretty good!
I am loving it!
Great content! Your truck came with Trailer sway control as well I assume. Mine did but it’s a Chevy. (Aside from the WDH you hooked up) I realize this vid is older. What’s your Payload?
Reviewing with a modified truck’! Of course it’s going to do better! That’s 3/4 Ton Territory There though! 💯
Thank you for sharing the video. What the payload capacity of your truck?
Mine specifically:
Payload 1444lbs
Conventional Trailer 8800lbs
GVRW 7000lbs
Curb weight 5556lbs
The AT4’s tow the least of GMC 1/2 tons. The powertrain isn’t the issue, the suspension lift is.
Great video. But, BOY, keeping up with the Joneses could get pretty expensive! But if you can, more power to you. Thanks for the content.
Hi Don. Do you have your spacers installed while towing? Thanks .
I did in this video. I felt comfortable with the performance
@@Donslife I appreciate the fast response. Trucks looking great! Thanks.
What is the payload of your truck? Does adding airbags increase your payload? Thanks!
Around 1500lbs. Airbags will help with load levelling and reduce body roll. They don’t increase the payload capacity. Replacing drivetrain and suspension components would be required to increase payload. But if you’re going to that, a 2500 HD version of the truck might be in order.
Nice video Don. Whats the tongue weight on the trailer? how long is it?
About 34’ from hitch to rear bumper and 835lbs tongue weight.
What is the range or how far can you tow before needing to fuel with your RV in tow. Do you have the standard 24 gallons or the bigger fuel tank?
Standard tank and a trailer this size pretty much cuts range in half. Grades, avg speed and wind strength/direction play a big part too. I’ve had tailwinds on flat grades that allowed to me to stay at the speed limit with low rpms and high gear and saw pretty good mpg improvements.
Have you seen the diamondback covers. Since you camp you can lock bikes in on top and still have storage below as well.
@@Donslife thanks Don
Anytime!
How did your truck do while pulling through the smokies?.. what size trailer are you pulling?
So you don’t really need to install other airbags ? Do they all come with stock airbags for that year? I’ll be pulling 8k+
You don’t ‘need’ Airbags. This truck did not come with them, but I added some for stability and also to lessen sag and body roll.
I know this is a old video but where did you get your white grill. I want that exact same look.
One like this if you’re in the US.

@@Donslife Maybe I missed it but does it have the 5.3 or 6.2... assuming 6.2 thanks

@@Donslife thanks.. I bought one last night
Just to clarify. You get your truck hitched, level and airbags filled and then put on the WD bars? Will you please specify your order of everything. Thank you.
No problem:
1 - make sure your trailer is connected to the ball.
I would recommend a WDH with built in sway control. Some are better than others but will help tremendously.
Hey Don what do you think about the crew cab room in the back do you think two 110 lb German shepherds will fit back there?

Hey man, what have u done to your truck after you brought it, I just got one, and kinda confused about it.
The list is very long. I would suggest watching my AT4 playlist from the beginning. First mod was a bullet antenna
What kind of air bag system is that you have with the remote control ??
Air Lift 5000 with the wireless compressor
Hi Don I didn't have time to watch the entire video but just wanted to know what gear ratio your truck has. Is it the 3.23 or the 3.42?
3.23. I had 3.42 in my Denali prior.
@@Donslife Be careful with those 3:23’s. I worked at a manufacturing plant that makes GM parts. They say the 3:42 is the Max trailering Package.
@@polandknight2012 yeah, 3.42 not available on the AT4. My Denali had 3.42
@@Donslife You really should've had the 3:42. I miss the 3:73's though. My God.
Cheers!

What kind of fuel mileage do you get empty?
How do the regular mirrors work when towing the travel trailer? Do you wish you had tow mirrors?
If you know what to watch out for, the sport mirrors can work, but if I had to tow everyday, tow mirrors would be nice.
You might want them if you tow long trailers. For me it was the opposite. Lots of experience with small mirrors.
How did you get the side view on your screen? I have all the other views for hooking up the trailer and I can see the hitch while I'm moving but that's it. Maybe I have old software it's a 19 Denali.

@@DarkenFool I absolutely have not seen anything like that. I will monitor mine
I was wondering why you needed to add the airbags. With Max tow package you truck has 300lb heavier rear leaf springs , when properly adjusting your weight distribution hitch with the load distribution bars it will level the trailer just fine. I did install the airbag on my 2015 GMC serria because it wasnt a max tow model .Now have 2020 GMC w/ 6.2 3.42 max tow and
my front side loading toy hauler is 30 ft 7000lbs ish wet.
@@Donslife ok! That makes sense. I am rarely in wide open areas except maybe bean/corn fields along the interstate. ;)
Where did you get your WDH from?
From the RV dealer where I bought the trailer
What’s your payload on the truck. You have to be close to max or over.
Max is 8800 for my truck. I was about 80-85% including fuel and passengers. I tow the trailer dry too. The point of the video was to review towing at closer to max capacity. I wouldn’t and don’t promote unsafe towing.
@@Donslife was just wanting to know what the door sticker said for your max payload
I should’ve mentioned the trailer is on the light side for its length. Fibreglass construction and about 6400lbs dry. We bring lots of cargo in the SUV which tows the boat.

Hi don! Hows the wheel spacer? Do you still have them on while you where towing?

It has a weight distribution hitch installed
@@Donslife I'm not one to tell anyone that they should do this or that, but I would suggest you google sway control and see how it could be beneficial. I believe Curt sells an add on sway control system for that hitch. That is a pretty long trailer for that truck and anti-sway seems appropriate.
Would you trust that half ton 6.2 truck in the mountains to tow that much weight? Your trip looked pretty flat.
