    I got 2 old sweaters from our secondhand shop to unravel and boy it was trial and error. Even after struggling I lost a big collar from one of them but still ended up with so much yarn i wasn't even mad. For sure a fun and sustainable way to get some good quality yarn for quite the good price!!

    Wow, that sweater was a real find! Last time I was in a thrift store I looked at a bunch of sweaters but none of them had nice seams like that - all had been sewn together and would have resulted in a couple hundred short lengths of yarn. 🙄

    If it were me and I was going to dye the yarn a solid color, I would have colored it before I unwound it. As for the "ramen effect", the waves and curls greatly reduce after the yarn has spent some time in a wound cake. Sometimes as quickly as overnight.

      if you dyed it before unwinding it you might have a splotchy dye where the stitches are

    That was really useful. I'd use a fine cable needle to help me unpick the seams.
    I have a beautiful angora jacket that I've never worn (he a ha), & is in a dated style. I had been thinking about cutting it into something else, but I'm hoping it's got those suitable seams. As I've got a lambswool jumper I don't like, I'm going to practice on that first. Thanks for sharing

    I don’t have a swift so I wrap it around my bent knee! A swift sure would be nice! Great and comprehensive video of the process!

    I’ve done that if I haven’t worn them much,or I know I won’t wear them much. I recently moved and had about 20 cardigans I made. I frogged those to make new cardigans until I have $ for yarn. Moving is expensive.

    Ugh, dyeing cotton is difficult, might have been better to do it with wool. I'm interested in finding out how that dyeing worked out!

    Hi I’m from uk and I bought a cardigan from a charity shop to practice but my crochet chain doesn’t come off so smoothly. I had to cut each V. Where am I going wrong 😩

    • @sue122
      @sue122 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably too late now, but you should try unraveling from the other end of the seam.

      Also, sometimes yarn can be very tough for example a worn acrylic sweater I tried to salvage had a lot of pilling(little balls of yarn that like to stick together) and so i had to go very slowly to unpick the seams and would cut the yarn every so often so it would be easier for me to unpick

    Can you just wash the garment before unwinding it? Or were you just washing the yarn so you could dye it?

  • @JazzyUrquoise

    Hello, beginner here! I did the same thing with two sweater but the yarn was all “untwisted”. Is there something i didn’t do well?

    Can this process be done without a hanks winder? I only have a cake winder 🙁

    • @madeinthemoment
      @madeinthemoment  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes !! If you want to wash the yarn after caking it you can always wind it around a chair to get it into the same shape as a hank :)

    Hello from the UK! 🤗 . I,ve just bought a genuine vintage Aran cardigan to unwind to re-make into a more modern tunic jumper, I,d planned to wash the full cardigan before I unravel it, would that be ok? Or should I do as you,ve done and wash it afterwards? Does it make a difference doing it your way? Eileen Waterfall 🙂

    • @madeinthemoment
      @madeinthemoment  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I often wash it before and after unravelling if it’s thrifted/secondhand! Once before to get it a little cleaner and then after to make sure any dust or things that were trapped in the stitches can be cleaned out!

      In addition to a seam ripper, it seems like, say a small DP knitting needle would be a useful tool in this process.

    Kiara, I watched the unraveling video and have a question. I have a crocheted garment I am trying to unravel. Natural angora type yarn. But each step is like untying a knot. Nothing just pulls as you show. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions appreciated.

    • @hopez6334
      @hopez6334 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I'm not Kiara but it could be because you are unraveling from the wrong side of the garment. I've tried unraveling crochet garments in the past and sometimes I accidentally start at the beginning of the work instead of the end. Or tbh, it could just the angora yarn that's making it difficult for you though I hope you can win the unravel games 😄

    Is there a way to tell the weight of the yard or most of them usually thinner than a worsted weight yarn (4)

      Pinterest has ideas about weighing the yarn to calculate length etc. Might be something similar here on TH-cam too

    can’t you just use a magic knot to attach pieces of yarn together?
