One more tip: when you bring home second-hand yarn, seal it in a plastic baggie and put it in the freezer for a week to kill any moth larvae. I don’t generally wash the yarn - if it looks like it needs washing I don’t buy it - but I do give it a good freeze. So far so good.
For the burn test, natural fibers will turn to ash, while acrylics form a hard end, like melted plastic. I rescue a lot of yarn from thrift shops and garage sales!
this was such a fun video! (and useful of course, but fun too!) i love secondhand yarn specifically because of the fun of trying to decide what to make with such a limited quantity (although decision paralysis does happen sometimes lol). my local thrift store just created a specific yarn section in their craft supply area and i’ve been keeping my eye out for some fun finds there
ahh thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) and yes I agree, it's super fun. That's so amazing that your thrift store has a craft section, I've never seen that before but that's awesome!!!
I’m super lucky; my local thrift store has a specific fiber arts section (yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, embroidery thread etc) and for super cheap as well. Most skeins/balls are priced under a euro - often even under 50 cents. To be fair, the balls/skeins tend to be smaller the thicker the yarn is, but I think last time I bought 4 multi-colour balls of yarn for about a euro? I also once bought like 7 balls of the same orange yarn in a bag and it was still under 2 euros. I’ve recently picked up spool knitting again so multi-colour is super fun for me since it makes for more interesting cords, and I’m also figuring out what I can do with the cords! (I made a braided bracelet with one today! :D)
I got some old granny squares in odd colors from a friend who was moving. Between the scrap yarn and the broken jewelry I collect, I can make all sorts of crafts. Rummage sales and people who are moving are my favorites. Tina, Al's wife

I love secondhand yarn, luckily the thrift store near me is one of the few that actually has a craft section and usually has some yarn.
That's amazing !!!! Secondhand yarn is so much fun, I love all the options !

I've never bought new yarn, all my fabric and yarn is thrifted and bargain bin stuff. It's a lucky dip and I love it.
haven't bought secondhand yarn but i am currently unwinding my mom's old sweater
that's amazing! It's such a rewarding process :)
Please show us the craft supply store! Great video Emma!
Have you considered gently washing the garment before you unravel it? That has worked well for me.
I used to be able to thrift yarn at my local thrift store all the time, but recently I never see yarn there anymore, sad
I swear I need you to link ur TH-cam channel on your insta link tree because I thought u didn't have a channel and I loved your stuff
Thank you! It is on my linktree but as a TH-cam icon on the top of the link so I think it's easy to miss!
There is WPI to find out what yarn size it is
