I 'm 71 and have seen Mr. Stafford play and listened to his reçordings and enjoyed them all. First time I have heard him do the boogie and I think he did an excellent job. Grand performer.
Thirty years ago I went to Stroud's Chicken in Kansas City. There was an elderly piano player who was playing brilliantly for the folks in the waiting room and nobody was paying any attention. We struck up a conversation. I was shocked at how well he played and asked his name. When he told me it was Pinetop Perkins it was almost more than I could handle. He told me all about his involvement with the Blues Foundation and a whole lot of other things that I have since forgotten. Such a sweet and gentle, engaging and friendly man.
A talent unknown. Where you guys dig this up is remarkable. Short , but quality always beats quantity. What a refreshing thing to find at the end of the day.

Jim Stafford had a great regular TV show I watched when I was a kid in Georgia where he shined his ability to be the Great vaudevillian Entertainer. He had a natural singing style with great lyrics and spooky slide and wha wha guitar. He had some song like ,"What if the swamp crawled up your pipes came out your water spout and told you you move out!"
A lot of talented musicians had TV shows back then. Roy Clark on Hee Haw, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Dean. Plus those shows brought new talent to the stage. Miss all that.
I have seen Jim 5 times. He is amazing. I wish I could have seen Roy Clark or Glen Campbell live. They would be ranked #1 and #2 in my opinion. (And Jim's)
Jim, I gave you a piano lesson at your Hollywood home near the Hollywood Bowl, in about 1973 or 1974. It was right after Spiders and Snakes, and it was before your ABC Television show. I saw you use one of the piano flourishes I showed you on that television show. You were and still are a consummate entertainer. Audiences love you and you love them and it shows! Thank you for being my friend. The way we met, I had a big notice (:Now you can learn to play FUNKY PIANO etc"on the bulletin board at Wallich's Music City on Sunset and you must've grabbed it off the wall. I think your secretary called me to set it up.
What a nice sentiment to share. I loved reading your story. I agree with you. I had a chance to meet with him 3 times. To quote Ed Sullivan, " He's a fine, decent boy."
I live near Branson and every time family comes to visit we recomend Jim's show if he's im town. His best wecever saw was aboutv8 years ago when we were foster parents. He put on a free show for all local foster parents and kids plus a few other groups. There was a good " finger food" buffet before the show. He had 2 other young guitarists, both excellent, with him on stage. He joked around a little as usual, but then opened up playing the boogie woogie and it was much more detailed and complicated thsn this version. Then the 3 played several songs concert style; each carrying a different line blended together to form one song. Went on for about an hour. Best I'd heard him or any other play in my lifetime. Wish they'd recorded it so I could replay it today.
Great guitarist. A poor man's Glen Campbell, a rich man's Roy Clark. Or something like that. I've often wished that Mr. Stafford and Mr. Ray Stevens weren't so danged funny. I feel like their showmanship distracted the focus on their very substantial musical talent. We're blessed that both men are still with us. when people talk about all these great guitar pickers people tend to forget about guys like Mr Stafford and John Sebastian but the real problem is there are just so many great insane pickets to keep track of and one of the All Time Greats is 15 years old sitting in his bedroom picking up a storm and busting strings
I saw Pine top at the Montreal Jazz fest in the 1990s. He was great. He was in Muddys band. I also saw Honeyboy Edwards as well. You could hear the wind of the Delta coming outa his fingers. He was on the road with Robert Johnson when ZRobert got poisoned and died.
I think his Branson theater didn't survive covid. I really appreciate Roy Clark, Jim, Glen Campbell and others who show off this skill. Didn't as a kid (except for the few times I caught Hee Haw).

Jim is not above giving credit where credit is due. However, in a 90 minute show there is only so much talking you can do. The show is about his sense of humour and musical talent. He did thank his mother once and all the little people.

While I'm not a real psychologist (I do play one on youtube) my diagnosis is he grew up as a shy, sensitive child with a whack of musical talent, who covered up the talent by being a wise guy. That'll be $100.
