    what I learned:
    -the reason sometimes units randomly had 0% recruit chance was because some abnormal status effects(like charm, sleep, etc) make recruiting impossible
    -frightened and breached stack(very well)
    -descriptions that say "increase melee damage" are actually talking about physical damage, possible mistranslation (beastslayer for ex)

    I think I'm seeing a repeat of what was happening during the PSP release of the game in which people would get stuck on certain places without knowing exactly what they had at their disposal to overcome their problem.
    Now it's not a "You are missing an Anatomy/Augment Element" problem, it is a "Maybe having a gameplan or two with your team could solve the issue". Reborn gives the player so many avenues to explore and find combinations that can make fights really easy to handle. Specially when the Union level is telling you that at that level you should be able to handle whatever they throw at you currently, even teams with higher level like this fight.

      Hard to believe it's possible to have any difficulty against Leonar. It's so easy it's not even funny. What was slightly annoying was winning without Vyce dying.
      Really hard is Hektor who already starts with 2 damage cards and 2 MP recovery cards. Hektor was a challenge to win by killing all enemies and not letting any ally fall or die.

    Love these videos bro! You've kind of alluded to it with other tips and guides, but action economy (or even RT economy, if you wanna really get in the weeds) is hugely important concept in this game, especially against bosses. Things like Pincer Attack and any crowd control spell are my go-to examples; using 1 action to effectively get 2 attacks is great economy, and using 1 action to take away or restrict 2+ actions (sleep, stun, silence, etc) is a great trade-off. I'm really appreciating how much this game demands clever planning and good strategy instead of just letting me rely on power-built combat monsters to cleave through my enemies. It's super rewarding.

      @@CoffeePotato The support spells in this game, especially CC, might have low accuracy, but they still feel incredibly efficient somehow.
      Speaking of CC, debuff durations seem weird to me. It doesn't seem like it's the victim's turns... What determines how long something lasts? I never pay quite enough attention to it to figure out >.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Poillip So that's also a function of Mind. It's kind of like they're landing RT ticks for duration instead of damage. This also happens for Debuffs. You definitely get great economy out of them, it's just harder to quantify.

    • @Poillip
      @Poillip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CoffeePotato Huh... An RT duration scaling with Mind makes a lot of sense actually. It would even serve to balance fast units vs slow ones. Fast units could theoretically act more often inside the debuff duration, possibly suffering the penalties for an extra turn.
      Ugh now I wanna find modding tools to dig into the math >.< I've barely started the game and I'm already this invested lol

    • @MrStimpson38
      @MrStimpson38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a follow-up to your RT point, it may seem unintuitive to new players, but it is usually beneficial to do the absolute bare-minimum with your character on their turn.
      As an example. You've got a new Valk you're leveling up/using. On her turn, you "could" run your max distance, then shoot someone with a bow for 40-60 damage. Seems legit, right? Sure, if that's a KB that'd be fine, but if it's not, then maybe moving up a square or two then ending your turn is the better option. For one, it means your turn comes up faster. Secondly, now maybe you're in range of a healer that you're doing 140-160 damage, or that same target as before, but now you're at a closer range so maybe you'll shoot a magic missile for 80-120 damage. All the while gaining more turns because your character's turns are coming up faster because you aren't making inefficient actions.
      But I like throwing rocks! That's great, and it can work (seriously, everything has a use/path to greatness in this game), but more often than not, saving RT will net you more damage in the long run than that 1 point of damage from the stone toss.

    I'm doing a no incaps run currently. The challenge is real. The AI will ruthlessly gang up on units if able, but does follow a predictable process, it will target the unit or units it can do the most damage to, or recieve the least damage in return as far as I can tell. I've seen the AI pass up a killshot for 100% accuracy attack, so I guess that's a factor as well.

      Beast Tamer is so good. Lobber + upgrade beasts and dragons + an actual I.W.I.N. button in the form of thrown bombs. I tossed an orb in a boss fight halfway through chapter 3, and basically trivialized the whole thing, 70% of the enemy team lost half their health, making the rest of my guys able to one shot a bunch of them. And several got poisoned too.
      That boss battle was the easiest fight I had so far, thanks to one action from my beast tamer.

    I think three houses(although a pretty different game) had a better grasp on the turn-rewind mechanic specifically - limited, but still there. And I think that's sort of the sweet-spot for strategy games, being able to go back a little and retry a different strategy without having to restart, but knowing that you can't do it endlessly so you don't waste time trying to get perfect turns. I adore this game in all other aspects though so far, and it scratches that fft itch so well(or well, even more than fft did tbh but don't tell fft I said that.)

    • @SakuraiLouishana
      @SakuraiLouishana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaos frame is the opinion of certain clan to Denam.
      The choice hes making across the game might raise or reduce CF of certain clan. Or make unit of certain clan incapped/death in battle. Technically they sacrifice themself for denam which will raise it. Make certain clan unit ress as undead will reduce the CF for reason. and some other.
      We dont know yet how its affect the game in reborn but in psp it was like this:
      Its affect starting of loyalty clan you recruit in shop.
      Its preq of certain character in Chaos route.
      High CF of certain clan will make you lose loyalty if you attack that clan unit in battle.
      Certain number of CF will affect Lord ending.

      Rankable skills have been a thing since PSP. It's your weapon rank, which affects weapon and spell damage, as well as Finisher access. This goes up faster the farther you are from your level cap, and additionally raises loyalty...which isn't that useful, but it is funny to see Arycelle bottom out her Loyalty in Neutral...only to be given a dagger with a spell on it...4 weapon skills at once....and seeing her go from bottom to max loyalty in a single move.

    3. how much percent to parry at base then how much does each parry level increase?

    @3:47 am I missing something here?? Terror knight with Zwei +1... has axe weaponskill equiped ??
    @4:53 here it happens again... Soldier with greataxe... has sword skill equiped...
    Is this just for leveling purposes or something? Because
    1) don't or do you get exp for a weaponskill you don't have equiped the weapon for?
    2) why not use the right combination (axe+axe-skill, sword + sword skill) to also get their Finishing moves?
    @5:58.. another thing I ponder... why give canopis the dagger +1... wouldn't a ninja with 2 of those be better for the 100% silence "chance" with the added effect of them having the bridle passive to completely neuter an enemy per turn? That way you can give our flyboi some knuckles so he can literally ensure the pincer attack procs even if your enemy has a rampart frontline ??

    • @AshAsmodeus
      @AshAsmodeus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      (got sick of editting this comment on the fly; so don't flame me for commenting on my own thread)
      That first battle can EASILY be won if you charge in headlong too... you have a height advantage which means that if you equip some jumpers (or flyers) with bows; they can permanently lock ALL of the enemies healers by simply buffeting that line with longrange shots from your archer line.... quip a ninja with a bow/crossbow (bow works better) and giving him the silence auto-ability and you can effectively lock ALL of their magic casters out of the combat... at which point this battle becomes 10 Vs THREE (note there's a runefencer in that frontline too)
      Early chapter 2 you get a LOT of battles where you either have height advantage or there's a lot of chokepoints... archers reign supreme here... more often then not they can shoot at the squishy targets without those targets having the ability to hit them back... this works in most of the forest maps 2; literally MOST of the battles in there will see you have the height advantage...

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple mixup, I wasn't going to use their finishers, and Proficiency by itself is faster, but weaker than before.
      Dagger ninja would be fine, most of that stuff is fairly situational. Like Canopus would carry a finisher farther, Ninja might be better for hit and runs, hell, personally I love light bow and dagger archers as my preferred shank unit. It's all viable, better is what you make it.

    • @AshAsmodeus
      @AshAsmodeus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CoffeePotato I often found that bow + Dagger archers came up a few tiles short out of extended range for trying to snipe at the backline and the frontline (ofc) has loads of pierce prot so you hardly do any damage... Gave them all greatbows/longbows and haven't looked back.
      Likewise; (cross)bow and dagger ninja's are fun but they get neutered in damage so much I discovered I was only using them for ranged status effect infliction and not much else...it keeps the ninja safer, true, but in effect you really only have use for proc+ cards and MP+ cards (unless you go for the backline again; then they all become viable)... whereas if I give them 2x 1-Hmelee then I can ALWAYS use the proc, MP, Phys cards, leaving the Magic for my casters...it's actually LESS situational imho (more allround; so that's a plus). Sure it trades their safety for dps output... but 2x crit + Status inflict + weapon effect ... I've seen my ninja's take a BIG chunk out of stuff like dragons

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AshAsmodeus I've liked a sort of middle ground archer every now and then, later ended up using the Vartan for this role, but the Dagger/Bow is pretty handy as a pull away unit. Whatever RT stuff is going on there exactly, they always seem to outspeed things chasing them. Makes for a great running debuff spammer.

If you see this video of yours you slip into complex strategy stuff straight away which is a far cry for me. So typically if you can rewind 10 steps and get into the same amount of detail you do in your videos it would truly be a newbie guide! Been playing the PSP version on and off until the console started dying and I never quite grasped the game (though I did finish it once, Chaos I believe). Now I'm back for Reborn on PC and loving the ease of customizing especially compared to LUCT. There's a lot in this video I did not quite realize, including just the concepts of formation, using probability and such.
    I'll probably find the answer somewhere in the channel (I'll look!) but something technical I never quite understood about the game is how damage works. Even now that I have a much easier time after waking up to the usefulness of Breach and Frighten, I'm sometimes baffled how some units can deal 1 to 10 damage while otthers go as high as 200+. Or how an archer goes from doing 1 to 100 damage after breaching. Damage in this game and the PSP version feels like needle teetering around a threshold, with one side being 0 and the being 100, no inbetween. Hearing "damage threshold" used as a term so casually makes me think this common knowledge to long term players? Is the needle analogy actually a thing? I'm constantly wondering what on earth I'm doing wrong lol

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the thing with damage. Staring at the damage formula will not internalize much. That's why I tend to use vague terms like Threshold..it's not technically a threshold, but can be thought of as one. Your big spikes come from those moments when you can punch past defenses, which means something different in every scenario. So if we imagine things like Elemental Advantage, Atk Score, Breach, Fear, etc as things to stack to push past an invisible threshold, it's easier to internalize than "we take the value from this, add it so this, multiply it by this, but only sometimes, and other times this, them we minus that from the number of toes on a nearby centipede and multiply by the weather, in order to then apply the 94x coefficient of the greater of the chicken or the egg, etc etc".
      Stack advantage, get number. 👍
      I'm going to make a simpler damage guide soon, I did one last week, but didn't like it.

    • @justsomejojo
      @justsomejojo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CoffeePotato Yeah, I did some searching around and it basically usually went like "okay, so the formula is this, so that's why certain weapons have an easier time breaking through." Which is *fine* but what I (and I imagine a lot of other people coming in) are looking for is a simple, look at this stat on the sheet, that's why. It's always super vague, but because "apply Breached, get damage" actually works really well, it's now less of a problem.
      On PSP, status like Breached was less accessible if I remember it right and I also tended to ignore pure status spells because of their accuracy (hence why your thought process in this video was pretty helpful) which meant I faced 1 damage in the forecast a LOT without knowing why or understanding how to deal more. Because at the end of the day, I didn't think one status proc would magically turn a 1 into a 100 (which, at the moment, actually turns into 200 and more and is amazing). Usually, I expect to have missed a key stat like "overall armor rating" that shows me how high I need to push - something simple like it's usually the case in RPGs. And then you see most people unpack the damage formula because, yeah, it's actually not that simple - it's a huge calculation in the back and no amount of looking at the stat sheet will help you.
      It's like with funky tech solutions (something simple like turning it on and off) - I know it works, so it's technically fine, but as to *why* it works, no clue.

    I mean there kind of is a meta right now. It's literally just use Canopus and pick up all the crit/phys up cards and then wreck shop with him, because Canopus is the single most broken unit in the entire game. I don't know what they were thinking. This is the best way I have found so far to mitigate the absolutely insane balance decision of spawning random cards around the battlefield with no rhyme or reason to them. And frankly it's pretty stupid to ignore cards considering how incredibly strong they are.

      @generic6210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely have a point, and a similar meta existed on PSP (except anyone who could wield a bow/crossbow could get in on it, too). I believe the reason Potato was purposefully avoiding the cards is to show how to deal with situations when you do not get favorable card spawns.
      It's not so much that you can't lawnmower the game with Canopus, it's having contingency plans for when that option is off the table for whatever reason.

    I love this game and I have been in love with the Ogre Series for decades, including the two previous Tactics: Ogre games. I think the game is still very hard but more than that, it's at the point where I would not object if they patched in some changes. As beautiful and synergistic as all these systems are -- it's **overwhelming** for some players, new ones I imagine, but I consider myself decent at the previous PSP version and pretty good at SRPGs.. and it's a lot for me to digest.
    If they added a "Basic" mode that just paired some things back, just removed cards and made a few things just things you don't have to worry or factor in as much. I can't say it would or wouldn't be more enjoyable, obviously "Experts" like CP would not like it -- but for Joe Casual? They might actually just enjoy the game a lot more and maybe work up to the Normal or Expert mode that is what we have now.
    I would also argue for an Easy/Story mode - or if anything, make a super easy story mode, a slightly harder easier mode, a harder but less hard than current Normal mode, Hard mode - as is and throw in a Maniac mode that is even more difficult than what we have now. Appeal to every single person who might want to play this game. Some are like Coffee Potato and brilliantly know every system and how to manipulate it - another might just want to see the incredible story. More players, more success and more success means more Ogre. I want remakes of Ogre Battle, 64, Knight of Lodis and Ep. VIII to come to light.

      While I agree that the game could do a lot more to explain some of its systems, I'm against easy modes and difficulty modes in general. Once you go down the path of variable difficulty all of a sudden there's no sense of what a game's actual issues are because each different difficulty obsfucates them since they will be an issue on difficulty A but not difficulty B.
      As you've said, the issue is that the game can be overwhelming (and I'd argue, poorly conveyed) new players. That's really an information access and availability problem, not a difficulty problem. Lowering difficulty won't actually fix that problem, but some codices about stuff (what all the status effects actually do, how armor works etc) in the Warren Report might.
      That said, I'm not a fan of the stat buff cards myself, mostly because they're gaudy and as Anakin Skywalker said about sand, they just get everywhere.

    • @MidlifeCrisisJoe
      @MidlifeCrisisJoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@patron7906 I think worrying about accessibility is a trap I suppose. Especially in a game like Tactics Ogre, which carefully uses obscure mechanics like Loyalty and Chaos Frame on purpose to create an experience that reacts in sensible ways to a player's choices both in its narrative and gameplay. The obvious intended experience is one where they don't want the player to be aware of everything going on at all times, to create some ambiguity and mystery over how things function in order to create a sense of novelty.
      I mean, I look at Reborn and I already can see that they've tried to make this game as "accessible" as they possibly could. The Chariot Tarot allows you to rewind and mistake you can make. The buff cards can give you a pretty massive combat advantage. The charms keep any soldiers you have neglected for a bit viable to play with without having to grind. The camera angles and trajectory lines erase any confusion that might stem from the isometric point of view. And the ability to speed up the battle speed can erase people who think a turn-based tactics game is too slow.
      All of those features are attempts to try and make the game more appealing to a larger audience - "accessibility" is really in most cases a code word for "popularity" in my opinion, as most of the time people aren't talking about color-blind options or something like that - and I'm really not sure they could or should do more. At the same time the PSP version's general easy nature was complained about as a flaw from the audience the game already cultivated, so they're also trying to appeal to the crowd that's played this game for almost 30 years now and give them something they can sink their teeth into as well.
      The reaction to that is usually "give the players more options" but I can speak from experience that flat difficulty options never work out very well. They either take just as much effort to do well as tuning a whole game's normal intended difficulty, which in a game like TO is an immense amount of effort due to all the dozens of systems in place and how they work in conjunction, or they're lazy and flat damage and health modifiers that have lots of oversights and do very little to actually improve anyone's experience because they aren't tailored like the intended challenge is.
      Besides, the main thing I think the devs at Squeenix could do to make TO more accessible at this point is to just update graphics. Most of the actual complaints I've seen on the Steam store page and others is how people don't think a game that looks like a Super Nintendo game (because it was one originally) can be worth $50. The old graphics seem to be the actual biggest hurdle people have getting into the game from the feedback I'm seeing.

    • @steel5897
      @steel5897 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, that'd just water down the game and make it lose all mechanical and even narrative weight through its systems.
      Often accessibility/easy modes are traps and ways to allow the player to ruin or water down their own experience. Would rather everyone learn the game, and if it's not for them then it's not for them, not every game has to be for everyone. This notion of putting accessibility on a pedestal is not just tiring I'd argue it's damaging to the medium as a whole, particularly for niche games like this. I'm glad there's no easy mode.

      Fair, but if you can just fly a 1000+ into the backfield, might as well take advantage of an easy fix to the problem. Canopus tends to hit harder with a dagger than a 2h on average, but those 2h finishers make for great pivots for a lightning team.

    Uhhh, how did you rename Denam Coffee Potato? I can tell this is from Reborn and not the PSP version, but the release build doesn't allow you to rename him. Is this your preview build? Because that's a unique feature of it, if it is. You should never get rid of that file off your hardware if it is, could be a collector's item some day.
    Also, I agree about the removal of the Chariot Tarot, at least partially. It's very much a noob trap because people don't understand how RNG seeds work (even though the game does explain it). Probably would have been better to lower the amount of times you could use Chariot per battle to get it into player's heads that it's not for creating perfect battles, but correcting a big enough mistake in your own decision making without restarting a whole battle.

    Oh wow, Pharompa opens up that early in chapter 2? That's a lot of cash. It's been amusing watching the percentage of people who have cleared certain parts of the story drop percentage by percentage as you move towards the end. I was a bit surprised at 44% of people picking slaughter, though that percentage is likely much higher for those who made it that far, as only 70% beat Nybeth.
    Another fun strategy is using the water to block movement and just focus on the ranged enemies while negating the melee enemies. One of many ways Valks are really strong. I expect knights are strong for many of the same reason. Caitua gets really murdery when you give her spirit strike.
    DPS is a wrong term for any type of tactical game. DPR is more useful, but only a bit. As long as you do enough damage that the enemy can't out heal, you'll win eventually. That time frame needs only be faster than what the enemy can do to you. If you are setup with enough healers, most fights are no threat at all as they can't break your healing. Sometimes, this isn't done by damage or healing at all, but simply positional manipulation of the enemies so they can't attack at all and their damage is zero.
