Funny how pointing a finger, leaves 3 pointing at yourself.
Styling yourself, updating and changing a 'stuck' wardrobe takes courage and screams youthful maturity.

I think that I am 75 (today!) and have to laugh at this. I pay a good price for my sweaters, but lately have felt that the quality of the fabric is not as good as some of the older sweaters in my drawer. When I checked the labels, the older, more comfortable and better quality sweaters are 100% cotton. So, I went looking for 100% cotton; and they were not easy to find. Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger do make 100% cotton and many of he ones I found are striped and look like “cricket sweaters”. So, at 75, I am wearing cricket sweaters and I think they look fine, especially with jeans and my brand new penny loafers. Always classic and “preppy” even at 75; I don’t think it’s ever too late to go back to school. 😂

The styling is what brings the sweater into current vogue. The front tuck. The neutral pairing. The right accessories. Which just proves that old classics never die. They just show up every now and then with a new date! LOL

I am 74... I wear what makes me feel good, physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. I decided long ago to dress to please myself and not worry about what others think. I chose my own style having come to realize trying to please others or being concerned about what other people think keeps me from being authentic; life is too short to seek out and follow trends that in the long run are not going to give me the value I already have. Life is more fun once we make the determination to free ourselves from what others consider to be of value when it might not serve our hearts desire in the long run. However I can appreciate the need others have with regard to how they look to others when they're in the their 40s 50s or 60s even though I was preserved from having that mind battle myself.

Jewelry for me is a big part of my personal style. I have a large collection of vintage and modern jewelry and it doesn't matter if it's *in* or out. I am 68 and if someone feels my style in jewelry is *old* lady, thats fine. I put vintage pins on my jean jackets and hats. I have a black beret that looks cute with a pin.
I don't feel I am frumpy in clothes that I wear. Like I can't wear sweatshirts with embroidery or otherwise grandma type embellishments. BTW I am a great-grandma x3. 😊 I dress for the situation. I am not a conservative dresser unless the occasion calls for it. I try not to dress too young but will add a trendy top or sweater to my outfits. Life is too short to conform. I do agree with almost all your suggestions for the most part. I have never cared what people think when it comes to fashion. Have fun with fashion.😊

Your suggestions for adjusting clothing choices are very interesting and valid observations. I’m 75 next week and I like to be stylish, so although I’m slim and fit, there are age related changes I have and continue to make so I look and feel comfortable and appropriate. Where I bristle a bit is the expression of “looking like an old lady”, inferring that being old is an undesirable stage of life. Perhaps words like frumpy, outdated etc. that refer to the style, not our age would be more appropriate. I sense you’re a very kind person who would not intend to diminish anyone by using age in a negative way. I hope you get what I’m trying to say with kindness and respect for your work.

Of course being blessed to age is wonderful. 🧡I was referring to a look. For instance when we discuss a teenager, you have an image in your mind of a typical teenager, although there are some out of the box that aren’t what you’d expect and can be common these days… or a mother, or a model, or a person with certain illnesses. MIDI and Maxi skirts or dresses can look very stylish. I spend a lot of time in Europe and women there are so stylish and break most of your rules. THe women look amazing. They also tend to be thinner than Americans which makes a huge difference. I usually check with my 30yr old daughter to see if something looks good or bad on me. So far, she approves. I dress in a way that suits me and makes me feel confident. I don't care what people feel about it. I prefer maxi and midi dress lengths. I wear turtlenecks. I have a dozen cashmere turtlenecks and many more in other materials. It gets to -30° F here in the winter, and I start wearing them as soon as the temperature hits freezing at night. I'm 68, for reference. Honestly, my fashion icon from 20 years ago was a white-haired lady who lived on my street; I never saw her in anything but a black turtleneck and black pants, and she looked fabulous. Another thing I'll never give up are my tweed jackets, but none of them are that Chanel style tweed. Most of them are very subtle herringbone blazers. I honestly don't care if people think I'm old - I am! In fact, I wish people would take me for the age I am, since they usually think I'm in my 40s. I have an old body, feeling it 24/7, and it irks me when people expect me to do things that I could do 20 years ago, but now it's just not happening.

So all of this stuff goes out and comes back in style. I dread when that old gold/orangey tones come back in. In fact I’m already starting to see it, and after lots of people have spent out and decorated in dull grays, now they will have to buy all new again to stay in style.

At our age (I’m a young 66) style is relative I don’t shop at Chicos or Coldwater Creek, or Talbots. (This is “old” to me! ) I watch young fashion influencers and adapt my style. If my 30 yr old nieces wouldn’t wear it, I’m not. I don’t let my belly or love handles stick out of midrise jeans,(I’m loving the high waisted wide leg style for my body type,) so glad “skinny jeans “ are out!! Classic items are a good choice for anyone. Sometimes a small touch of leopard somewhere is great, shoes, a pair of earrings, a tank. Younger people in my family actually ask MY advice on outfits! And, as others have said, it’s all about embracing your age. I know I don’t look 40, but I could probably still pass for 55! But I love saying my age out loud, I don’t get the lying about it, people know by other signs anyway we aren’t really fooling anyone! We need to be ourselves & chances are if you had no style when you were younger, you don’t have style now. But, that’s fine too!

Women who were raised matching colors care more about their appearance than the youthful females who are so against matchy-matchy. The misogenistic trend became wearing mismatched clothes that make women look unknowlegeable and hideous. (BTW, I'm a designer.)

I can wear it instead of aVeiling for Mass. I love the look of long skirts with a red and lots of jewelry. I love beads…excess boho look is me and I constantly get compliments. I am 71 and everyone who does not know is stunned. I’m told I look 55 to 60. Much of fashion, style is putting together a look that is uniquely you then head up shoulders back and a beaming smile. Ok...I get it. Absolutely. I'm 55+ and I want to look stylish, but recognize that I'm not always going to please everyone. You know (me thinking out loud here), there is a certain freedom to being older. I worried so much in my 20s, 30s, and 40s about what people thought of me if I wore certain things that were too big, too small, too slouchy. I worried about being too big, too short, etc. You get what I'm saying. I recognize the value of altering things that are currently on trend to fit our changing bodies. We want to look good and feel good, but darn it! I don't want to care sometimes, lol. It should be about how it makes you feel. 'Old lady' has such a negative connotation, doesn't it? It is what it is. What I think I look like in my mind is different from what I see in the mirror, and perhaps starting with being kind to each other is where we begin. I'm still learning to be kind to myself because you know it's hard not to find negativity out there every day. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and great ideas.

When I was in my teens back in the late 70’s/early 80’s, older women used to often wear clear plastic kerchiefs over their newly set hair. I remember my best friend and I wondering why women would choose to go out in public looking like that. We were a bit afraid that we’d reach a certain age and suddenly wearing plastic kerchiefs would become a viable option. We swore to one another that we’d never do it.
We’re pushing 60 now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be an issue. The wearing of plastic kerchiefs has become a thing of the past as that generation has passed on.

I was 76 November 13. I have always dressed very feminine and classic. I ran a huge business for 45 years, and had to be stylish. Today, during the day when I’m not looking after our properties here in South Florida, I wear skinny jeans and a pretty top, and have a cardigan in case I’m in air conditioning. At night, I always wear DolceGabbana midi-length dresses (not the crap you see in magazines today like KK wears). I have many of their classic evening and also luncheon dresses, all mid-length because I’m thin and 5’5” tall and the longer length makes me taller, since I’ve lost probably 3” due to being hit from behind 3 times with crushed vertebrae in spine and neck. I am lucky that my body hasn’t really changed, but I take care of myself. I agree with others who say nobody really cares what you are wearing. I just came back from a two week cruise on Oceania Riviera in the Mediterranean. My sister and I were the only two who dressed every night, wore high heels and evening purses and jewelry. We could have cared less that other people were not as dressed. We dressed as WE always dress, and I’m not about to step it down because others are either too lazy or ill-informed as to how a lady should dress. Now I’m ready for everyone to jump on me, but as one lady said, I don’t care. I earned it!

Well done video, Liz! I peeked at a few comments, most of which are along the same theme as on other similarly themed channels. I am 64 and of the same mindset - I will wear what I like and what makes me feel good, whatever anyone thinks. Having said that - I also think most of us want to leave a good impression, especially with strangers. I have met many women who brag about not caring, to the point of looking like they made an effort to look like an unkempt slob Maybe there is a fine line between not caring about what others think and not caring about oneself. I grew up in a very rural part of the Northeast and we were far from "well-off". My mother did not have the latest styles or a closet full of beautiful clothes, but she was always neat and tidy, dressed as best she could and never left the house without lipstick. She was stunning.

I think all of these tips are spot on. One thing I have come to realize (I'm 68 - for reference) is that mature women are much "thicker" than younger women. What looks good from the front can be really unflattering from the side or back view. I think a tutorial on selecting fashions that flatter older women in 3D vs 2D would be really a great subject.

Great video Liz really amazing information if you are worried about your neck when you wear a button down or v neck you can wear a twilly scarf the silk or satin type to hide your neck a little bit and the pleated pant the ones that usually cause the tummy issues the pleat starts to open up right from the waistband which then if you have a bit of a lower tummy can open up from the waistband making your tummy look bigger than it is either check before you buy them that the pleat stays together until it's at least halfway two thirds of the way between your waistband and your hip that way it doesn't open at the top of your tummy if you have pairs already that start at the waistband just fold that pleat sew along it so it opens up lower down and then you can wear those trousers and them be flattering too instead of get rid of them hope this helps someone 🥰

I LOVED the pictures of the models wearing the 'matchy matchy' co-ordinating clothes , in the same colours and fabrics. It looks so stylish, 'put together' and FAR from matronly! As a hater of skirts ( I'm a BIG dress fan. Which is weird as , when i was younger, I NEVER wore dresses) I do agree with the skirt suit. Im not such a lover of them, unless it's a chic, well-cut and designed flowy cut. I love v neck tops. If I do wear a higher, round neckline I accessorise with a chunky, dramatic necklace to 'alter ' the visual appearance. Ultimately, if clothes make you feel good, ladies, wear them. Say NO to the so-called rules. And Subtle shoulder pads balance out the body

The one unequivocally great thing about reaching "that certain age" is that one no longer needs to care quite so much what others think of one's choices.
I can remember being a teen and crying myself to sleep because a mean girl told me I looked "too skinny" for my chosen attire.
Now at 60 I wear whatever I want and though I wouldn't wear clothes that don't flatter my figure, I'm certainly not going to avoid wearing something that somebody might - oh, the horror! - deem "too young" for me.

Great observations! Maxi skirts can be very chic when paired with a heel of some sort. Flats make them look more matronly to me in addition to not balancing the top like you mentioned.

I always wear maxi skirts with flats, but then I always wear flats, never been able to wear heels, even when young, and they always feel frumpy on me when I try to wear. I am 5ft 9in tall, and find that my shorter friends can wear them better than me. I go for slinky flat sling backs for instance or sexy sandals or even white trainers. If the other things you wear are not frumpy, for instance, a vee neck tee instead of shirt (which I find feels frumpy on me) I think flat shoes looks fine.

I always appreciate tips on how to look stylish! I take advice in the vein it is given , in your case trying to help me look better. I don’t have to use all of the advise, I can just file it away! My favorite shoe brand is Vionic. They have so many styles and the cutest boots. The arch support is wonderful. They are on the $$-$$$ side but so worth it! My favorite store to shop at is WHBM. I am 61 and their clothing fits me so well and I stick to the classics. I have trouble finding a good fit at Chico’s and Talbots. I also love SOMA for undergarments and sleep wear. Thank you for the video!

Always so many classy items to choose from and they don’t require special washing and ironing! I feel about the same with the other brands you mentioned as well, but I keep trying anyway because I’ve found a few amazing pieces there over the years. Thank you so much for tuning in and this thoughtful comment!🧡🍁

It is strange, and terribly sad, that someone would get deeply offended by advice being given to them free of charge, and by their choice. If you apologised once you did so at least 3 times. It was my choice to click on the thumbnail, to watch the video and continue watching. Most presenters on TH-cam are making thee constant dicslaimers. It should not be necessary. Your advice ranged over a number of issues - so what if I don't like 1 or 2 of them, or even all of them. I enjoyed what you had to say. Won't take on board a number of them and will look at some issues I have. My final say - what i wrong with being eccentric? At the age of nearly 70 I can wear purple, I can show my creased neck and wrinkled hands. Live and enjoy fashion.

Your suggestions are very good, even though I personally think that what makes you look younger is how confident you are in whichever clothes you like, and of course, your demeanor. Most of the time, unless I have a business meeting, I wear still the same black alt-punkish cloths I've worn since my youth, and people are usually surprised when I tell them I'm 58. Those clothes should make me look like an old, out-of-time wanna-be, but apparently they don't, because they are "me", I'm comfortable in them, and I don't care about people's opinion of me any more now than I did before. I guess that's... youthening? 🤪

Love this, thank you. It's always good to have an opinion from someone on the outside looking in.... I have moved into my 50s now. Every decade I feel like I have to learn how to dress all over again. I've just always tried to dress age appropriate. I am almost 52, I'm allowed to have some grays and some lines. I don't think at this point I'm going to hide it.
When I was young I always admired older women that just looked put together. I didn't expect them to look like me, an 18 year old. I admired a classy, put together look. I also like the older ladies who can wear trendy stuff, but you better have the personality to match it.
I'd like to see a video on more casual looks, because I don't go out in jackets. I live in the south. I don't have a corporate job. My church is casual. The only time I would ever worry about these styles is an occasional wedding, funeral or party. I also hate jeans, the are too hot and uncomfortable to me.

I am 70 next year, living in UK and would not dream of wearing any of the frumpy clothes you mention, so not sure who would? I do love a maxi skirt, but narrow cut and worn with tee shirt in summer, but then I am 5ft 9in and I can often buy the ones that are on sale as many ladies are too short to wear them. I used to wear gold finish jewellery, but feel that looks a bit old lady now, so prefer silver and more streamlined, modern stuff, only one item usually, although maybe a silver bangle and earrings if going out in the evening. I live in a cold, windswept area, so always on the lookout for modern cut, warm coats, like puffers, cut well, often at a bargain price in TK Maax!

Lol! You are fun! 🎉 This has been great! New subscriber! We really do have to look at ourselves with love❤️ At 70 i decided i need turtlenecks back in my life-- yes jawline is sagging but the knit (not worn tightly!) is so fun to wear (styling hair right is also important). I don’t need a scarf for the cold as often -and the 🐢 helps hide other things the aging neck presents us with😂

I’ve kind of replaced them with scarves myself….. but I’m ALWAYS open to try again! I’m so glad you found me and welcome!!🌸 Thank you for the lovely comment!!🍁🧡

As an influencer myself, especially for Fifties and older (I'm 65) I cannot stress enough that the number one piece of clothing we should concentrate on is our foundation. It is so important to get fitted for a new bra or even measure ourselves from time to time. Weight, surgery, age all of these means our bust level and width and our cup size will change. Also watch the size of panties. I believe we should always wear cotton because it's breathable and discourages bacteria and is also cooler and softer to the touch. Watch the panty lines girls, and perhaps choose your new size in various styles to suit what you wear. Once we have our foundation we can see how different styles will look on us. Also, try not to buy prints, large or small, they give off a matronly vibe. Instead buy the basic colors, black, navy blue and white. If you want a touch of color wear a pretty silk scarf as a necktie and choose a color that brightens your face. No more cropped pants from now on. They are out of style and they shorten the leg. Wear everything at the Ankle or slightly over the shoe.
Hope this helps. These tips I have learned from other women. Thank you for the video. 😊
