The memory that the Giver showed Jonas to give him courage was of the guy in China that managed to stop a line of tanks... Both him and the soldier in the tank were probably killed, but they will forever have my respect and admiration for their respect and value of human life.
The guy was carrying bags and climbed on the tank if I remember, bystanders made him get off and ushered him away. for all we know they might have lived another day.
@@NightPhoenix.Y i don't remember fim climbing on the tank, but I do remember 2 other people rushing him to run. And the bags looked like groceries, and his normal clothes.. . Made him really relatable. I first learned about the clip on a geography class. It was pretty shocking, but at the same time not.... ? Since then, I watched a documentary that said the soldier was probably killed for disobeying orders (the tanks were going to the Peace Square if I'm not mistaken), and the man probably too. Sad, isn't it? A man just wanted to prevent the murder of people unhappy with a dictatorship. And another one just didn't want to kill another human for standing up and not taking it with a mouth shut. They were both so brave, yet now they are probably dead. And yet, we now have such a inspirating clip. "You can do it, you can make a difference. No matter how small you are." So perhaps we should just start making a difference, even if a small one. Because it really does matter. Alright, this is pretty big already.... So I'm going to stop writing now. Sorry if I philosophized a bit too much.

Unfortunately, without the emotions we don't want to experience, such as pain, hate and sorrow, we cannot experience love, happiness and ecstacy. A movie like this can make you think deeply about life, but mainly on how to appreciate it.
What? That makes no sense, happiness doesn’t need sorrow and misery to have meaning; happiness itself is meaning. If you kidnapped and tortured people to make them ‘better appreciate their lives’ you wouldn’t be a philosopher taking matters in your own hands, you’d be a sadistic and stupid monster! I hate this line of thought and it genuinely angers me that people actually believe this crap.
Seems like a flaw in this society’s system to allow people to have names and not just designations like a number for example. Names promote individuality.
i wish they kept the detail from the book about the community being completely flat (as in no slopes or hills), since it was a good way to show how much he first memory jonas recieved impacted him by leading him to slowly become frustrated that no one but him and the giver were allowed to experience the memories.
Coz the leader lady obviously one of the only person who don't have any restrain. And I think that's a smart thing to do. I mean it's dumb if EVERYONE were to be emotionless including the one who created these systems. There definitely should be someone who would monitor things.
From what I remember from the book, emotions were not removed completely, but were sort of watered down and limited to the shallow ones we experience day-to-day: enjoyment, excitement, annoyance, worry, surprise etc. but eliminating ones like love, desire, hate, despair or anything to intense that could cause irrational actions or conflict
One of the best shows I didnt really watch as I dont usually like shows that effect my emotions. Its good to see people fighting for love , truth , understanding , freedom and for what is right.
"Gabriel failed his maturity test." How can a LITERAL BABY fail a test!? Was he supposed to stop crying so much? Was he supposed to grow another inch by a certain date? Was the baby supposed to start crawling?
Probably. I'm thinking that since all babies are genetically modified they are supposed to reach these certain achievements by a certain date or they will be marked as dysfunctional and killed.
I can’t remember in the movie, but in the book it’s basically described as “failure to thrive”, meaning he’s weak and not growing or eating as much as he should. Since the community doesn’t have illness or disability they just get rid of the weaker kids.
@@DBtheGhost2 realistically, it would be 100% okay. The baby is incredibly young, and as long as it doesn't drown too much it's got years ahead of it to heal it's brain from the affects of it
@@optimisticnihlist9705 I'll need more people to convince me of that one. I feel like they wouldn't know how to hold their breath. I think the brain would be damaged to much from the impact, or there would be broken bones. It looked like it was too high of a fall.
@@DBtheGhost2 primates have an instinctive drowning response, so as long as the baby saw it coming, it would hold it's breath. I would say though, it didn't look like it saw it coming. But also, the younger a child is, the less susceptible they are to neurological damage, and even of they are damaged, they're at an age where they have lots of cerebral development ahead of them to overcome it. I remember, for instance, once that a baby drowned in a river for about half an hour and was dead for well over an hour and when was revived was deemed to suffer no neurological damage.
How do you have "friends" with half your emotions gone? Wouldn't everyone just be mentally unstable? Think they over-thought the concept a little bit. Haha
More like they didn't think it through all that much. It's really more of a thought exercise than a practical concept. The number of suicides would be through the roof.
The Giver was actually based off of a book that I read last year. The book is ten times better than the movie and explains things far better, and not to mention that it’s an entire series.

Living in a world without emotions would be terrifying considering you wouldn't be able to feel the bad nor the good things about life. You'd be living a lie.
Except it wouldn't be terrifying, it would be normal. We see it as terrifying from our perspective. You can see how the world they live in actually isn't "bad", because bad as a concept doesn't exist, if you get what I mean. It's what makes it such an interesting book/film. Both the emotional and emotionless people are both right, just driven by different factors.
Equilibrium covered this as well despite being a far more action oriented movie. It's one of the most horrifying yet fascinating ideas of a 'utopian' society. Mass Effect's Mordin Solus puts it best when he talks about how these kinds of societies would be actively anathema to living. Without culture, without new ideas from art and literature and new ideas for interpretation, society is doomed to stagnation. Even Mass Effect's "Geth", entirely Artificial Intelligence synthetic beings are open to new ideas and co-existing with organic beings despite their creators trying to destroy them. Without new perspectives, without new ways to look through the same lens, we never have new ideas, new inventions, what happens when this 'utopian' society no longer has the means to provide the ingredients for it's emotion-dampening drugs? This is a band-aid on a festering wound that will result in total anarchy eventually, the elders are merely forestalling the inevitable.

@@locutusdborg126 uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this is true. But I’d also like to note that we don’t live in a darwinist society rn where we are fighting to survive, so its better we know the truth.
@@sinfinite7516 The 80's were the last bastion of Darwinistic society. You had kids allowed to wander around outside unsupervised, riding bikes and skateboards without helmets. There were no warning labels on bags about choking hazards, or warnings about hot things that would burn you, or concern about small things that children could (and would) put in their mouths. The kid who swallowed a handful of pennies dying was normal, and I would say a damn good thing. We don't need people like that growing up and reproducing... however that is exactly where we are now. Human intelligence in the US has plummeted because we are so concerned about saving people who have no interest or ability to save themselves. So the kid who swallowed dozens of pennies grew up to give birth to more imbeciles that stand in lines, view advertisements, buy products, and work for the sake of getting in debt. Basically cattle consuming more resources than they supply. Literally following the history of the movie Idiocracy to the point where it is becoming a documentary rather than satire. World population is nearly 8 billion people. Only 200 years ago, the world population was only 1 billion people. Over 200,000 people are born every single day, and that number is still increasing. The advancement of medicine and the ability to save people from their own weakness will be the downfall of the Earth, as we have way more people on Earth than our planet is capable of supporting. As it stands now, in regards to the resources we use and the ability of the planet to absorb our waste, we are using up about 1.8 Earths worth of the planetary capacity to support life on a daily basis... essentially taking out a "loan" against the world that will never be paid back. You are right, it is better to know the truth. However, as an individual, it is nearly impossible to make any impact even knowing these truths.
@@Bancheis pump the breaks there Thanos. Even as we consume the resources of the planet we are rapidly progressing in all fields. Progress comes at a price. But the benefit usually out weigh the price. Once we have figured out how to leave the confines of our home and go to other planets the CYCLE will begin again as it has in the past.
@@SFox-nf3bo I would like to agree with you, but I can't. We are not advancing fast enough to meet or exceed the needs/desires of the people in the world. Those needs and desires grow faster than the resources needed to support them because the world no longer has forms of population control, and we are swiftly erasing all forms of natural hazards that traditionally control this. "Only the strong survive" is a phrase often repeated by people like myself for two reasons. One) this is how it has always been since the dawn of time, and Two) this is how it will be when the systems that protect people from themselves collapse. The fall of Rome is not just some historical thing that happened in the past, it is a template of what happens when society collapses. And that template can be applied in nearly all societies of the world. In fact, the United Nations themselves have documented over 195 countries that no longer exist today, and I don't mean from thousands of years ago. Plenty of changes just in the last 100 years. Only 2 countries in the entire world make up nearly 40% of the entire world population. That's nuts. As those countries grow and are unable to support themselves, they will become more desperate, taking what they cannot make for themselves. The worst of society already do. (Scammers, hackers, thieves of intellectual property... this is only the beginning) Now of course, not all people are inherently bad like that... but what do you think will happen to the rest of the world when smaller countries get to that same point of desperation? If the US gets to this point, we will have worse problems than no toilet paper in the stores, and look at how much of a problem THAT caused by itself. We are all living on a ledge that can collapse at any moment. If we expand to new planets, we will just strip those planets of their resources as well and move on. That is the only CYCLE we have to look forward to. Human beings are parasites that take everything from their host until nothing remains. The greed of humanity outweighs ALL other wants and desires, and our societies are built around that greed, supporting it and encouraging it. Look at societal support for Big Tech, Big Pharma, and places like Amazon and Google. These corporations control our medicine, our computers, our supplies, and even our knowledge. If that doesn't at least concern you a little bit, then you are likely one of the people who would not be able to survive without them if they collapse.
Book was eons better. Portrayed the lack of emotions in people far better, and the ending was also much better. The movie felt like it turned into a stereotypical teen drama that completely opposed the book.
The film is also good but the thing is that the book should've never been adapted to film in the first place, it's not the kind of story that would work well if presented as a film, so they probably had no choice but to turn it into a typical "teens in a dystopian world" kind of film
As soon as I saw the words “No Pain, No Conflict” I immediately thought ‘So a movie exactly like The Giver?’ And it actually ended up being The Giver lol
I'm reading the book but I think that overall these are both equally making a good emotional impact, teaching life morality, and just being a good plot
In the book it was the eyes that symbolizes it. Gabriel had the same eyes and was able to take in memories. What the movie doesn’t show is that when a giver gives a receiver a memory the giver only has a small memory of that memory But the giver. Jonas and Gabriel all had the same eyes in the book. The movie is a birthmark
ngl, the giver is so much better as a book you feel how Jonas feels so much better through his astonishment of color and trying to explain it to the reader but just can't the revelation of memories, colors, and emotions just make it so much more impactful

If we think about what causes depression and anxiety and how we're all self-medicating now to control these feelings, it's not too far-fetched to think some humans might decide they'd live better lives without them. But I think this shows that our depression and anxiety are feelings we need to process and grow from and not just delete from our existence. It's good that mental health as a whole is becoming more acceptable in society but we need to make sure it doesn't spiral into this kind of dystopian reality.
I think mental health acceptance is very important, however I think this modern world promotes self infantilisation and our social construct has broken the institutions which would have given the tools to understand we are more often frightened than hurt; and suffer more from our own imagination than from reality. Whilst in many important ways those institutions needed cleaning, we threw the baby out with the bath water. I just hope we can rebuild the concepts fast enough, but the last 4 or so years hasn't proved that to me.
Theres a great difference between sadness and depression, and a normal anxiety and a anxiety that cannot allow to you live. The mental health isn't about being happy, is about accept your emotions, process, and change yours thoughts to avoid maladaptative behaviours (and that's not allow you to enjoy the life as we see in the movie)
When my depression is treated I still get sad and in fact, I am appropriately sad instead of just feeling numb. I don't treat my depression to avoid those feelings, I treat to experience them as they are intended.

I'm pretty sure the closest thing we see to this is north Korea.
It's against the rules to lie

That's not how antidepressants work.
People don't numb themselves.

I actually read this book in class about 4 years ago now , I rarely read books but the book gave way more of an explanation then the movie. Some things are off or left out but other then that the movie just gives u a break from having to read the book
I was forced to read it in my literature class but tbh I’m fine with that
What is the name of the movie?
@@MarkIrwin02 it’s called The Giver
@@Wincognit0 thank you. I want to watch the full movie. Very intrigued by this video
@@MarkIrwin02 no problem. The movie is based off of a book and I recommend reading it. It can really capture the black&white feel too and it’s just really good overall.
Edit: the book is also called The Giver
Everyone has their own kind of perfect, what an amazing way to show it.
I remember reading this in middle school as an assignment and loved it so much . 🥰
in a world with no emotions and feelings
“jonas feels scared”

Scared isn't an emotion, its an instinct. Even insects can feel fear.
@@uckbritley1305 you silly scrunt
@@uckbritley1305 no it is def a emotion.
No emotions yet he scares... The movie logic 101.

Seems like a Cross between Divergent and Logan's Run .
This predates these by like 20-30 years, this book came out in the 80s
@@amazingabby25 . Well Logan's Run Predates that . The Original Movie version starred Michael York and Jennifer Agutter . Certainly Divergent is newer .
@@amazingabby25 Logan's Run came out in 1976.
The only Utopians I've ever heard of (would like to be recommended more tbh)
How I see it, all Utopias are Dystopias, but not all Dystopias are Utopias
I love divergent, I still need to read the books but I watched the movie trilogy all yesterday
I read this book and watched the movie! They were both really good tbh, although I prefer the movies ending as I’m not that big of a fan of open endings and prefer ones where you know if there is a happy or sad ending, not an ending that can be interpreted as many different things. That’s just my personal opinion tho, and other than that I basically liked them an equal amount.
It has 3 sequels
There are more parts/books
@@ZainIsInPain Honestly the sequels had way too much magic stuff for my taste
What was the name of the book? I just randomly saw this in my recommendations and now I wanna read it

Towards infinity in a state of Balance, that's a Perfect world. Not a denial of the natural world/reality!

Couldn’t you just have changed morning into night
Yes I read this story back in grade school, it was quite an amazing story.
Almost reminds me of that Movie called VOYAGERS where they gotta drink Blue Liquid to silence their emotions as well.
Try watching equilibrium.

Seen that one on Netflix back in 2012. Christain Bale was awesome in that one.

I like the fact that a movie, that has a story about having no emotions, is trying to convey emotions in its characters, and yet fails at it.
Can you do a recap of the movie Orphan? It's a good movie that not many know about.
The killer girl with stunt growth? I think its already recapped

@John Martain Yeah The Guy Who This Channel Copied
lmao. The Orphan movie is pretty well-known though.
@@jeffsterc1657 what is the channel name because I'm somewhat tired of this guy's monotonous robot voice
I remember watching this movie back in middle school! and we had to write an entire summary plot of the whole movie. Too bad I didn't had this channel with me back then LOL
no more sex well that sucks down with that society muhahahahahahahahahahahaha
I loved the book and honestly loved the movie too. The way the movie shifts in camera angles, music, and color to follow Jonas is SO cool. And the memory scenes do a great job capturing the emotions he's suppose to be recieving.

I still remember this movie, I once watch this when I was a kid. Its great to watch it again
For those who don't, 'The Giver' is actually a book. I've been searching for the title for years! I'm so happy to have found it. The movie is just like the book, but the book isn't like the movie and I highly recommend that you all read it.
This movie taught me that living in a perfect world doesn’t bring happiness
Because the world in the movie is perfect and it didn't bring the people in it happiness?
but the world in the movie is not perfect at all tho
Which is why we have emotions/ hatred it balances our world even if we don't like it
Isn't that what you guys asked for?
Don't back paddle now.
Tell that to billions who are suffering because of western democratic capitalism
Pain gives happiness meaning. It reminds us of how great the opposite feeling feels. It's meaningful and essential for the greatest joys we can experience
"love can easily turn into contempt which can turn to murder"

Forgot what a great cast this movie had - I saw it ages ago and it was enjoyable being reminded of the plot details. Love your channel!
This is literally my favorite book, read it once in 7th grade I think, I loved it so much, it was just so different, this book was what started my dystopian society addiction
I don't even notice I binge watch movies in only a few minutes. I also wanna see you reviewing not just real humans movies.
I READ THIS BOOK LAST YEAR!!! one of the best books i have ever read in my life. i loved it so much, i had to read it as daily assignments for class and those were some of the best times in ela class that i’ve ever experienced.

Something I found interesting in how this affected me is that if I would to watch all the memories that were shown, I will not feel much, just a bit of happiness.
But when it trasintons to a black and white with no emotions. Then brings you back to those memories, makes it feel more special and gave a better feeling.
